NEW FIC ALERT

My 2026 @ficwip5k challenge fic, Worth the Wait, is up on AO3 now :D

I've done the 5K challenge in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and they're some of my very favorite fics! I have been looking forward to participating again this year for the last six months, haha.

This fic came about from a couple of different places - I started writing Clone Wars-era Anakin as hard of hearing in An Uncivil War/Pick up the Pieces, which just felt right for the time period and all the head trauma he goes through on the show. So I was already doing a little bit of research for that. And then I read True Biz by Sara Novic, about a modern Deaf residential school, and you know me and my tendency to make everything Obikin that I can get my hands on :) So then I started putting Deaf!Anakin and teacher/student relationships together, and ended up with this.

At the same time, I'm not Deaf, and having read exactly one book with Deaf main characters does not exactly make me an authority. I reached out on Tumblr and am - as always - really grateful for the feedback and help I received. @palfriendpatine66 - also not Deaf, but knows more ASL than I do - beta-read this fic for me, and it's a better, more legible fic for it (if you'd seen my first draft, you'd understand, lol). And @kittonafoxgirl put me in touch with a friend who works as a university ASL interpreter - Obi-Wan's exact job in the fic! - and relayed all my questions and helped me really iron out the logistics. Thank you, friends! I wouldn't have wanted to do this without you. ♥

I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.

I’ve missed you and I’ve missed the community around here! I want to be around more but have had a hard time getting back into things feeling so disconnected from it — but that’s 100% on me for pulling back so far for so long. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the Heated Rivalry fandom — I was right, as soon as I gave in and started reading fic over there I was all in. The very little I’ve been working on creating has been heated rivalry related: mostly just for my eyes and nothing that’s come even close to completed, but it’s kept me going in an otherwise creative drought.
