It's been awhile since I've post here, but I am very excited to announce that the novel I've been working on for the better part of 2016 has been accepted by The April Gloaming! It's due for release this fall. I met with fiction editor, Aaron Joel Lain, at BookPeople before Christmas to sign the contract and seal the deal.

I like to make playlists for the things I write. Working on 2 stories at the moment. I think these selections set the respective moods.
There’s a currently popular argument that books help us feel empathy, but if they do so they do it by helping us imagine that we are people we are not. Or to go deeper within ourselves, to be more aware of what it means to be heartbroken, or ill, or six, or ninety-six, or completely lost. Not just versions of our self rendered awesome and eternally justified and always right, living in a world in which other people only exist to help reinforce our magnificence, though those kinds of books and comic books and movies exist in abundance and cater to the male imagination. Which is a reminder that literature and art can also help us fail at empathy if it sequesters us in the Boring Old Fortress of Magnificent Me.

Everyone lies about writting. They lie about how easy it is or how hard it was. They perpetuate a romantic idea that writting is some beautiful experience that takes place in an architectural room filled with leather novels and chai tea. They talk about their ‘morning ritual’ and how they ‘dress for writting’… No one tells the truth about writting a book. Authors pretend their stories were always shiny and perfect and just waiting to be written. The truth is, writting is this: hard and boring and ocassionally great, but usually not

My writing #Routineology. I don’t write every day. I wish I had that much drive to hop from the day job to the dream job. But I have a plan of action!
My very first public reading for my very first book, The Biggest Little Bird (Black Hill Press, 2014). I read with Kelly Luce, author of the short story collection, Three Scenarios in Which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail. She is a lovely lady, full of talent and advice. Highly recommend going to her next reading, wherever it may be.
I was pleasantly surprised by the response: No one in the audience had guessed that this was my reading debut. I suppose those hours holed up in my room reading to myself really did have a payoff!
I came away with a few mental notes, reminders for how my reading should be done next time. For this occasion, I chose an excerpt that was a bit long, and I felt that I had to stop myself at the climax of the piece so that I didn't run over the time limit. Well, now I know which excerpt to use and where to cut it!
The best part of the evening was meeting another young writer! She could very easily have been me in my freshman year of high school, gathering advice on how to break into publishing wherever she could. I hyped her on Black Hill Press. Maybe she will be in their next collection!

Now that it is finally settled on July 5th, I will be reading alongside the wonderful Kelly Luce, author of the short story collection, Three Scenarios in which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail!

So, I am participating in Black Hill Press' and JukePop Serials' collaborative Summer Writing Project. It's a chance for new writers to get some good exposure and explore new works, and I've been having a grand old time.
Gee is, of course, magical realism (which, by my definition, means to look for the magical elements in a real-life situation). The title character is known only by the nickname, seems to shift between genders, and reveals bits of him/herself through former romantic dalliances. Most of all, it is the story of one night and what happens during the first extraordinary phase of love at first sight.
