finnick odair's "oh" moment
i really love this look that we get from finnick during this scene because i think it sums up everything he says about katniss loving peeta in mockingjay.
“it’s just that i didn’t understand when i met you. after your first games, i thought the whole romance was an act on your part. we all expected you’d continue that strategy. but it wasn’t until peeta hit the force field and nearly died that i—” finnick hesitates.
i think back to the arena. how i sobbed when finnick revived peeta. the quizzical look on finnick’s face. the way he excused my behavior, blaming it on my pretend pregnancy. “that you what?”
“that i knew i’d misjudged you. that you do love him. i’m not saying in what way. maybe you don’t know yourself. but anyone paying attention could see how much you care about him,” he says gently.
the realization upon seeing katniss become hysterical and truly horrified that she might lose peeta, kissing peeta the second he could breathe again, clinging onto him the second he could stand again, holding him so tight against her trembling body as if afraid that some other force field might throw peeta off her arms again.
and then THIS. finnick looking away as soon as he realizes that oh, it's real. it looks as if he is worried that he just witnessed something intimate and genuine that is not meant for his eyes—or anybody's—because it's extremely private. because it's a moment for katniss and peeta only, completely unguarded and without a trace of false act because it was a moment of fear. fear that you just lost someone whose life you value more than your own, someone you are ready to die for, someone you choose over everything and everyone else. and that someone being just GONE. it was fear. and just a little above it, surfaces love. the kind that is selfless, soft and fierce at the same time. and finnick sees all that and knows that it is secluded, and so he allows them to keep that secret. he looks away and thinks, oh, it is real.
