Poster Source, Q & A

Everything I do is in the spirit of Rochester music. Not only do I want to support the local music but I also want to support it’s support structure. There are a lot of parts at work in the local music machine. This is an interview I did with Art, the owner of Poster Source. Poster Source is a business that does a lot more than posters and fliers, they can do direct mail, shirts, special merch, booklets, tickets, business cars, brochures, CD jackets, and more. I have used them since I started dealing with Rochester bands and they’re one of the most enjoyable business relationships I’ve developed.

Joe: 

How did you start poster source?

Art:

Poster Source started as a division of my father’s business. He has a shop right down the hall that buys and sells production printing equipment and he asked me if I knew anyone who needs posters. I was playing in the band Sleeping Giant at the time so I knew I lot of people who needed posters. The business grew faster than my dad thought and I had the opportunity to buy the business and in 2010 my business partner and I bought equipment from express press and moved into where their shop was on Chili Ave. About a year later we moved to the current location on here on Greenleaf St.

Joe:

How many people do you have working for you?

Art:

Just one, me and my helper. We were a staff of four at peak but I bought out one partner and another guy left so we are just two now.

Joe:

What was the strangest print job you ever had to do?

Art:

We did a calendar featuring some well endowed ladies. One sticks out in my memory; I think they used milk in it but not as milk… it was questionable for sure. Business cards for a “sensual healing” business; that was a good one too.

Joe:

I've always come here because you are local and treated me well so I love bringing my business to you. Do you find that you get a lot of local support that way?

Art:

We have grown primarily because of word of mouth and that’s where our steady customer base comes from. We try to be competitive and user friendly, and have something available in every price range. I haven’t even done that much advertising; it's really thanks to people talking about us.

"A Princes Empty Bedroom" -Sam Snyder

On February 20, 2014

“Overhand Sam” Sam Snyder had an event at K-robin guitars on Goodman St, Rochester, NY to debut his first solo project, "A Princes Empty Bedroom."

 When I arrived I couldn’t even open the door because of how many people were inside. I held the door open for a while; it was noticeably warm with human body heat and I thought people would appreciate the reprieve. I slid in to the right and joined Todd and Geoff behind the table where they poured free 3HB beers to everyone who wanted one. I watched the pleasure they got from turning away money except for donations for Sam. Free Sam CDs. Free stickers. Free beer. Free hugs too.

In between the solo set and the set with Kurt and Matt, five poets published in Canto Magazine read selections of original and non original work; men and women, one accompanied by the upright piano. They were fantastic and were received warmly. It’s good to see different arts collaborating with each other in Rochester. Canto is a local literary publication.

Sam’s music had a lot of darkness which is a far divergence from the music you normally see him perform with Thunderbody or My Plastic Sun. I look forward to watching him develop his sound and learn more about his vocal range and abilities; I’m also glad to say he’s my friend too. I felt that Sam really made the right choice in venue and presentation to convey what is important to him.

A Princes Empty Bedroom

On the weekend of 2/1/14 I went to New York City to network and see what I could make happen for Papa Joe Productions.

On Monday MdotCoop and I were taken to Spikehill in Williamsburg. It’s a very cool bar/restaurant with well priced beer, a nice stage and good vibes. They do free events most nights of the week, a nice score in NYC. This was freestyle Monday.

We walked in mid battle and watched an 8 mile style rap tournament where the rappers basically just verbally assault each other and the winner is based on crowd noise. It’s all in good fun as everyone is shaking hands and exchanging hugs between each round; all done over a live band.

After the winner collected over $100 worth of pretty cool prizes from the events sponsors, Homeboy Sandman graced the stage with a short, spirited set. After him the band came back to the stage and the hosts began the freestyle open mic. Anyone who wanted to could go up and spit some bars supported by the band and the background vocals of the hosts. MdotCoop joined in the fun and it was a very warm, inviting event to be at.

The Festival of Love fulfilled its namesake. Opening with their version of “Let’s Get It On” Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad maintained the loving vibe all night at the Water Street Music Hall following the support vibes of The Greener Grass Band and Axis Armada. It’s not a secret that Water Street has been through a strange year facing the many challenges of ownership change, having to cancel and reschedule many shows. You would have never known it on Valentines Day night though! I have high hopes that the venue will pull through and get back on track soon - it was pretty clear to see that the old concert hall has a lot more life left in it.

Insight on goals.

The idea that I should begin to network in New York City has come to fruition. Motivated to break into music markets out of Rochester, I thought I should begin making regular visits to NYC.

Back from the first trip I brought back more questions than answers. The ideas and motivation are invaluable. I would like to become a vehicle to take Rochester talent that I feel is worthy and bring them up. I feel a stagnation in our local music scene that I have heard verified by many people. This first trip to the city is the first of a lot of trips which will give me what I need to make an impact on the music scene of Rochester and at large.
