Lucretia had been feeling off-color for days. Usually she wasn’t one to complain, but since she had another life to take care of now, she was very conscientious about her health. So she scheduled the appointment after a few days, as soon as it became clear that this wasn’t just another weird quirk of pregnancy. She sat in the doctor’s office, Paris at her side – a frankly surprising but welcome relief. It wasn’t that she doubted his love for their child, or for her, for that matter (at least, not at the moment), but he was usually just so…busy. With whatever it was that he actually did.
She flashed him a reassuring smile as they waited for the doctor to enter. “I’m sure everything is fine,” she said. “I don’t think it could be morning sickness this late in the pregnancy, but I have no doubt it’s something they can help us with, with no problem.” She looked up as the door opened – despite her confidence, she reached out to squeeze Paris’s hand. “High blood pressure?” she repeated, once the doctor was finished speaking. “What does that mean? Is the baby okay?” The doctor smiled at her. Yes, of course, Mrs. Wilde. You’ll just have to stay on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy. “Oh.” Lucretia smiled at him again, but when he left, she turned to look at her husband. “Bed rest? Are we going to be alright? Financially?”
Paris couldn’t sit still, so he opted for standing beside Lucretia with his back to the wall, a habit formed from the paranoia of spending time in international prisons. If he was standing, you could bet your bottom dollar that he was snug against a wall and in position to see everything and everyone around him. Lucretia had mentioned a couple of days in a row that she wasn’t feeling like herself, and out of fear for the health of their child blooming inside of her, a doctor appointment had been booked immediately. And even though Paris had other plans on this day, he’d dropped everything to be at his wife’s side.
His heart was pounding, and foot tapping lightly on the floor as he glanced over at his spouse. She was smiling back at him with the most comforting expression she could’ve had. Somehow, it did calm his nerves for the time being. Of course, that moment was short lived. “That’s what we’re paying them to do, keep mommy and baby happy and healthy, so they better do just that.” In reality, the treasure hunter had no idea what the problem could be. So many strange things happened to a woman when she was carrying a baby that Paris couldn’t even begin to understand, but he would still be there for Lucretia, no matter what. High blood pressure. Paris’ heart sank as he listened, his eyes darting from his pregnant wife to the doctor who was currently explaining the situation. An audible sigh of relief escaped his parted lips when he heard that the baby would be fine, all Lucretia needed was bed rest until the end of the pregnancy. Lucretia was anything but lazy, so he couldn’t imagine her having to stay immobilized for longer than a couple of days, much less months. He thanked the doctor on his way out, rubbing his wife’s hand as he did so. Finances was the least of his worries, and hadn’t even entered his mind until he heard her question. “Of course we are,” It was as if he had no doubt in his mind, though his life was not a wealthy one. Still, he would find a way to support his family. “Don’t worry about the money, love, I’ll handle that. All you need to worry about is getting better.” With that, he ran a hand down over her curved belly and rubbed the baby bump gently and lovingly as he pressed a soft kiss to Lucretia’s temple. “I don’t know how I’m going to keep you in that bed, though.” He joked as an afterthought.
