P.S. I LOVE YOU MS BROWN’S CREATIVE WRITING CLASS
“P.S. I Love You” is a collection of works by the 7th and 8th grade classes at Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy. Students were asked to write about a few different subjects: The Equations of Love, Family, Community or Friends or a combination of these. They wrote about Black on Black crime and Hood vs. Neighborhood. Both grades were asked to write a letter to their 5-year old self offering advice and sharing their journey from 5 to their respective ages. Most asked for clarity and were asked to share what they have learned about their peers, adults, school and their parents on their journey to 7th and 8th grades. This work is called, P.S. I love you because most had to be reminded to, just as they would tell a grandparent or their parents in a letter, they were reminded to SIGN their letters and tell their 5-year old self… “I love you.”

The Equation of Me (and my family)
I’m divided between what I love to do and school. My family motivates me to multiply A’s. Sometimes I feel subtracted from my friends because we’re so different. Adding my personality makes my world of family and friends what it is. I deserve to be happy to the 10th power. My imagination is filled with the geometry of stars and, in this life, my equation equals a distance that will take me far.

The Equation of Me, my family and my city
I think I am adding my skills to my life. I am becoming more subtracted because I am letting others bring me down. I am multiplying my love for my family and dividing it into my city.

The Equation of Family
I feel as though I have a big family. My grandmother multiplied when she had my other grandmother, her child. Then, SHE had four kids of her own. Sadly, a couple of people were subtracted out of the family when they died. Three of my grandmother’s kids had kids of their own, too. Aunt s and Uncles had children and Tameka, my mom, has 5. I have 3 grandmothers, 3 uncles, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and over 10 cousins. Add it all together, however complicated, it equals LOVE.

The equation brings us together like 1+1. It separates us using 4-4. We multiply like a community. When I’m divided from my friends, I feel as though I am alone but, I’m in a different crowd. What family am I in?

My community is getting worse and worse. Its divided by real danger. People can’t even walk their dog or just walk down the street. I just want my neighborhood to change, subtract the violence and hate and add a little peace.

Me and my family multiply love through thick and thin…through all weather, we’re with each other at all times. We are sound like bells, wedding chimes. Me and my family will always love through the lows and the highs. Me and my family will help others, even if we don’t have for ourselves. Me and my family love like 1+1=2…we love simply.

My community is a big equation. We try to multiply our love: We subtract the hate, add more people, sum up all the trust. Our love spreads like triangle numbers.

The equation of my friends: I had 3 friends, add 2 friends, I had 5. They were Emo, I was the only Goth. One day 2 of my friends were subtracted, they died. I was sad I lost my best friends. Too bad they hate their life.
