I don’t know... I don’t feel good about this.

He didn’t even know this girl very well...or the girl’s voice that was talking to him inside his head. But he knew it was the same girl Thomas was looking for. He did feel a bit guilty for telling him he didn’t know a girl named Teresa, rather than confessing that they had been talking to each other telepathically long before they’d even woke up from their comatose state. But he’d felt the strong need to protect himself, and therefore he couldn’t afford making anyone suspicious of himself. But now Teresa was asking him to protect Thomas, and he wasn’t sure if this was the right way to do it.

ENDED RELATIONSHIP STARTER SENTENCES.

She knew what he meant. She always knew when it came to Aris, it felt like. Paradise would be unbearable without him at her side. It would be unbearable to see Tom everyday ( to see him enjoying life without her – to see him HAPPY when she was so TORN ) without Aris at her side. Aris – he knew her like no one else could. He had felt her pain with the death of Rachel. He had been disowned by the Gladers after their time in the Scorch, and when they had no one else, THEY HAD EACH OTHER. And it was comforting, but it was also SCARY AS HELL.

It was hard to be close to him, despite how strong their connection had become. Teresa was scared to get attached to him, too. She hadn’t put it in words in her mind, but his saying it aloud, well, it was what she was feeling too.

Blue eyes flicked up to meet his gaze, and she could easily see the raw honesty on his features. He was scared, maybe even scared to tell her that he was scared. She didn’t know. All she knew was that she wanted to help him ( that was what they did, help each other when no one else would )

“Hey,” Teresa said softly, her hand reaching to softly rub his shoulder. “It’s okay. I know… I know what you mean, I think – I’m here for you, in whatever way you’ll let me… because I can’t do this alone. I can’t be here without you. I couldn’t STAND it… you know?” ( she hoped he knew what she meant… ) “So don’t worry about it, because I’m going to be here with you as long as you’ll let me.”

He couldn’t help feeling like he would betray Rachel and his memories with her if he let Teresa become something more than a friend. But then he would remind himself that Rachel was gone, and that he couldn’t mourn her forever, as much tempting as the idea was. He needed to move on at some point, for the sake of his mental state, and who better to do it with than Teresa? After all, their pain was what had brought them closer. They understood each other. They were both trying to move on.

Except, the person Teresa was trying to move on from was right before her eyes, which would only make it harder for her to push aside her feelings. And maybe she wasn’t trying to get over Thomas at all. Maybe Aris was nothing but a distraction to her. Maybe she only wanted to be with Aris because Thomas had pushed her away, and once Thomas was ready to take her back she would forget all about him. If that was true, and Aris was pretty certain that it was, he couldn’t allow himself to get hurt all over again. He just couldn’t trust her with his heart. Perhaps he’d never trust anyone with it ever again.

❝——I know.❞ He let out a small sigh, green eyes meeting her strikingly blue ones. He could tell that Thomas still loved this girl, and really how could he blame him?

❝——I just need some time to figure out what I want... There’s been so much going on.❞ It was more than a simple excuse. It was the truth. He was confused about a lot of things, they all were. They all needed time.
