Paper Airplanes for Girl Meets World

Español Portuguese (summary only) Hebrew

The Basics:

Make three paper airplanes, each one small enough to fit in an envelope.

Send one to Hulu and one to Netflix requesting that they acquire Girl Meets World and produce new episodes. Then send one more to Disney Channel asking them to please sell the rights if someone offers.

Decorate the outside of the airplane and write your message inside. Be as creative or as bare bones as you like, and remember: there is nothing wrong with a simple airplane made out of notebook paper.

Mail your airplanes on the Monday after the finale, January 23, or at any point that week. The aim is to have most of our planes “land” at Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Channel the Friday after the finale or around then. Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t ready on Monday January 23rd, because you can still mail in your airplanes the next day, or even the day after that…but let’s all aim to mail them on the 23rd. To fans outside the U.S.A.: if your post takes a while to reach California, please feel free to put your airplanes in the mail early.

If you can only afford to send one or two airplanes, that’s okay too! Just choose between Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Channel. Please don’t feel like you can’t participate at all just because you can’t do all three.

The Why:

It’s relatively easy to tweet, sign an online petition, write a comment, send an email, or even just make a phone call. While those actions are key, deploying an old-school tactic like this one takes the #SaveGMW campaign to the next level. Adding a physical component demonstrates just how dedicated and serious we are about trying to save our show. Some of the most successful “save our show” campaigns have integrated a physical component, like when thousands of Friday Night Lights fans sent lightbulbs to NBC.

We chose the paper airplanes idea (submitted by a no longer anonymous fan) because it’s simple, cheap, representative of both shows, and most importantly: easy for even the youngest Girl Meets World fans to participate in, which is important because while GMW has a big grown-up fanbase, young fans are the heart of it all. All you’ll need is some paper, three envelopes, and postage. (You may also need markers and crayons and stickers, depending on how artistic you want to be).

What to Say:

To all three companies:

A sincere personal reason for why you love Girl Meets World so much you’re willing to fight for it.

Your age and location.

To Netflix and Hulu:

If you or your parents are already subscribers, let them know. If you’re not, tell them you’ll subscribe (or beg your parents to do so) if they save our show.

Talk about how Girl Meets World fits in with their business models and goals. If your whole family watches together, mention that. If you’re an international fan who isn’t able to watch live, mention that (particularly to Netflix). If you’re a cord cutter who watches the show the day after on Amazon/iTunes but not live, mention that.

To Disney Channel:

I know we’re all angry at them right now and a lot of us have probably made that known already, but be polite. If you don’t feel like you can be polite, maybe skip this one.

If you (or your parents) plan on unsubscribing from premium cable packages which include Disney Channel (or have already) due to the show’s cancellation, say so. If your family plans to stop watching the network due to GMW’s cancellation, say so, especially if you have family members in their primary demographic.

Appeal to their bottom line, aka their pocketbooks. Say that you understand Disney Channel has their reasons for the decision they made, but suggest that perhaps they can make some money they otherwise wouldn’t have off of selling the rights. Mention also that selling the rights so the show can continue elsewhere would garner goodwill towards their company.

How to Help Spread the Word:

Use the hashtag #planes4gmw on social media. Reblog this post! Share the link to this post as well as the Twitter and Instagram: @planes4gmw. We will also attempt to get this campaign trending on social media during the finale as well as the day after.

If you can make graphics/digital fliers to promote the #planes4gmw campaign, please do so. If you can make printable decorated airplanes for others to print out, write on, and mail, do that! (And please send them in to be shared here). Any talent you can contribute is appreciated.

Share your planes and (if you choose) the messages inside on social media before mailing day! Use #planes4gmw, as well as the other campaign hashtags, and if you’re sharing on Instagram/Twitter tag @planes4gmw in the photo.

Tell your friends! Maybe even get together to make your airplanes. If you watch the show with your family, ask them to join you too.

Managing Expectations:

While we’re all hoping our combined efforts result in the rescue of Girl Meets World, there are no guarantees. However, we definitely have a shot here. More and more cancelled shows these days are getting second lives elsewhere. If Disney Channel is willing to play ball, we may have a real chance at seeing Girl Meets World grow up. It’s worth a try.

It’s a long shot, but it’s still a shot. So don’t throw it away. Know that it’s good to fight for something you truly believe in, even if you might fail. Hope. Dream. Try. Do Good.

Girl Meets World: Are The Writers Messing With Us?

Why the non-triangle’s resolution is problematic.

Girl Meets World’s divisive love triangle was resolved in this week’s episode, “Girl Meets Ski Lodge Part 2” and predictably, we were met with disappointments and cop outs.

Lucas chose Riley and Riley chose him back. Meanwhile, Maya and Josh agreed to maybe date someday when their three-year age difference won’t matter as much. Which, will be when? When Maya is 18? None of this will matter by then, especially if the rumors about Girl Meets World ending after season three are true.

Now, shipping is a controversial and often contentious topic. And that’s why I’m not here to argue one way or another which of the two couples are better. Rather, I’m arguing for the legitimacy of both couples, something that was refuted in the latest episode. My gripe is with the whitewashing, backtracking, and the overall undermining of the central love triangle by the writers.

As someone who admittedly is not much of a shipper, and who finds the art of shipping secondary to characterization and story (though, sometimes they are not mutually exclusive), I have no skin in this game. Who ends up with whom is of very little consequence to me.

And still, as someone who has invested time watching this three-sided romantic situation develop and grow before it it was whittled down and erased within minutes, I feel cheated.

As it turns out, Maya never liked Lucas at all. In fact, Maya only pursued Lucas as a means to protect Riley from getting hurt. It’s why Maya supposedly stopped being Maya and started acting like Riley. Maya internalized Riley’s feelings for Lucas – they were never actually her own. It’s psychobabble at it’s finest, and it’s total nonsense.

What this explanation does is refute the very idea that Lucas and Maya were ever onto something non-platonically. It eliminates the notion that Maya and Lucas could have thought of each other as something more. And yet, we saw these things happen right in front of our eyes.

The reason why fans gravitated towards Maya and Lucas and clung on with slipping hands is because there was a visible flirtation and attraction between them. Maya and Lucas had a unique rapport since the first season. Clashing personalities eventually evolved into opposites attracting, so much so that even fellow classmates pointed out their undeniable chemistry in Girl Meets Yearbook.

Their interactions were vastly more compelling to watch because of the back-and-forth bantering and playful teasing. They challenged each other and brought out different sides to each other. Maya brought out Lucas’ sense of humor, and Lucas softened Maya’s edges.

This was a couple that was initially not part of the plan. The tale overtly belonged to Lucas and Riley – The Cory and Topanga counterparts of this sequel.

But because of Sabrina Carpenter and Peyton Meyer’s chemistry and spark, fans began to notice and march loyally towards their direction. And that should have been a natural progression for the writers as well.

When writers set out to do something, and along the way they find something else that may actually work better, something that resonates with the audience and speaks to them that they in turn respond to strongly – then that should be a turning point. And how often has something like that occurred on television? Where the original idea was scrapped in favor of something unpredictable and unexpected and more interesting, something that the writers could not have otherwise planned before witnessing the palpable, magnetic chemistry between two actors take off on screen.

Lucas and Maya should have been the happy coincidence that was seized. The signs were there. The attraction was there. So, what happened? And why then, were we subjected to this prolonged, dragged on non-triangle for so long if the plan was to dismantle it all along?

Ah, the plan. If you are familiar with the GMW Writers Twitter account, then you are familiar with the cryptic tweets about the triangle not being a triangle, and how that was part of the plan from the start. It’s another reason why it feels like the audience has been jerked around. If the plan was never to have Lucas and Maya’s feelings for each other be legitimate, then why toy with the idea in the first place, other than to throw Lucas and Maya shippers a bone?

It seems that GMW’s main plan was to have Riley and Maya, and their enduring friendship be the central, most important relationship in the end. And this is a commendable conclusion to have. But in reality, this still could have been achieved without diminishing and explaining away Maya’s true feelings. In fact, it would have been more commendable and feminist if Maya and Riley’s friendship remained strong and resolute despite their feelings for the same boy.

Let’s talk about what could have been had Lucas made the difficult choice. If Lucas chose the best friend – the girl who caught his eye much later in the story, the girl he wasn’t supposed to like – then the story would have elevated the Disney show onto more mature grounds.

It would have said something real and honest about the complicated nature of “feelings” – the supposed theme of the season – and subverted the idealism and wholesomeness of family shows like GMW.

But, instead, the show recoiled back into its prim image, afraid to speak realistically to the messier parts of growing up and developing feelings. It took the easy way out and chose not to tell the more daring story.

Two best friends couldn’t possibly like the same boy, because if they did, then their friendship would be over, right? Wrong. Erasing Maya’s feelings for Lucas demonstrates the writer’s lack of confidence that Riley and Maya’s friendship could overcome a conflict with a boy. Instead of prevailing over the obstacle, GMW eliminated it altogether.

It would have been more fascinating and worth-while to see Lucas and Maya choose each other, leaving Maya and Riley in a position where they, themselves have to choose to build their friendship into something stronger and more impenetrable than it once was, giving them the opportunity to learn and evolve, because that would be a true coming-of-age story with no cop outs, excuses, or easy way outs.

It’s a story that would require faith and trust in the viewers and its characters, and the writers of Girl Meets World seem to have none in both.

Beware. I may be about to gush.

So I’ve been perusing the IDF spoilers, taking it all in, speculating on what will happen next, all the while trying to think of something intelligent to say about this latest burst of fandom news.

But all I want to do right now is melt into a puddle of hope and happiness. My little heart that tries not to get attached can’t help it, because I’m literally in awe of what MJ is doing with Riley and Farkle. Is there really any debate that he has very intentional plans for them? That he is always setting them up to have some of the most important and emotional moments on the show? That he’s telling a very different kind of love story than he told in BMW? This one is oh so subtle, always brewing just under the surface, always going deeper, always giving and not taking, always very present and very real, always having the chance to completely take our breath away at any given moment?

Guys, we got as much as we could possibly hope for in IDF without losing the essence of their story. They will never be loud or obvious, not even if they are together. Nor do I want them to be. I wouldn’t trade them for Rucas no matter how long Rucas stays together and no matter if Riarkle never happens. What is months of a stagnant relationship compared to the first little dawning of realization, no matter how small, of something real? A thousand sugary speeches can never equal a moment of absolute, heartbroken sincerity.

Riley and Farkle’s story is about the kind of love that flourishes in your life in a place of safety, trust, and selflessness. In the absence of expectations and demands. The kind you nurture effortlessly without being remotely conscious of doing so. The kind that takes you by surprise one day, because it was a part of your life for so long, and so close to you, that you couldn’t see it for what it was. The kind you either never believed you were worthy of, or never knew you wanted.

That kind of love can’t be overshadowed by other relationships, even the ones that are equally as strong. Riarkle might not be the central relationship of the show, they might not get the most screen time, but they ARE the hidden gem. MJ knows what he’s doing. And he’s given us just enough hope to believe that everything we’ve been seeing on screen for three years isn’t, in fact, a mere coincidence.

I’m good with that. Bring on season four.
