Yesterday Alice wanted to know about condoms. I didn’t have one to show her so she asked me to draw a picture. I sketched out a before and after and explained to her how they worked. She then labeled and embellished it to make it into a comic. The sperm are his eyes. I die.

Before you’re quick to judge about the fact that I’m discussing condoms with my nine year old daughter you should know that we talk about sex at least once a week. One of the better things that has come from adopting an older child is that lack of awkwardness that is usually associated with talking about sex related things with your parents. The first time she asked me a question about it was two weeks after I met her while we were in a Best Buy. Instead of brushing it off or freaking out about how young she was to want to know these things I answered her honestly. Once she knew she was allowed to ask me these things without getting in trouble the questions poured in and I realized how much this sweet little girl had been exposed to and the extent of her abuse from her birth family. You can’t tell a child who’s already been exposed to sexual situations that she doesn’t need to know the answers to her questions until she’s older. You just can’t. I never want her to feel ashamed for having questions or sexual desires especially when they’re the result of things that weren’t her fault. Being honest with her has allowed us to help her start to cope with everything she’s been through. That being said, we are careful to educate her that a lot of parents don’t want their kids to know these things at such a young age and that what she’s learned isn’t for her to discuss with her friends. It’s up to their parents to decide when and what they want them to know. This works well for us but to each his own.
