the thing about me being terminally ill about these characters is that the comics will be like "maximus' parents told him to not tell blackagar about how their powers are connected" and ill take that and be like ohhh. so maximus was a kid who was forcibly seperated from his brother that he genuinely wanted a connection with because he struggled to form meaningful relationships but everytime he tried he was pushed or pulled away from either blackagar himself who also couldn't properly connect with the people around him or from his parents who actively encouraged maximus to keep things hidden from him. up to the point that maximus wasn't even sure if his parents even actually cared about either of them or if they were just science experiments and an attempt to protect attilan with stronger inhumans, and started keeping more and more secrets thinking that's his reason for existing.
and when blackagar does take over, maximus is so heavily invested into this story of 'blackagar depends on you to be a good leader' that he thinks blackagar cant be king at all and that maximus *needs* to act a certain way to keep their city safe. and this just festers in him for years and years until finally he sees just how throughly rotted their relationship is, so far beyond saving, that he finally confesses what their parents told him because he thinks it's finally too late, too much, no going back. and he knows either he's going to go away forever, or he can do one last trick. and he knows he won't be forgiven for it this time, but he was doomed from the start anyways.
