Notes Des Dégustation, entry for a wine photography competition

Statement:

Many parts of wine culture and tasting are defned by the delicate art of hinting at things rather than accurately depicting them. Indeed, tasting a wine requires describing the attributes implied in its taste, often by relating to various rather unrelated elements such as texture, food or form.

With this in mind, the photography series “Notes de degustations” (french for tasting notes) somewhat reverses this idea by visually depicting many of the implied tastes found in Chablis wines.

Thus, none of the photographs show the wine itself.

Nevertheless, the choice of zesty fruits, crisp limestone and flint textures as well as a pervasent dewiness strongly hint at the freshness and minerality of Chablis. Furthermore, the visually balanced appearance of all elements, including some delicately printed items, loosely relate relate to the highly elegant nature of Chablis wines.

Finally, the order in which the photographs are viewed is also important, since the process can be abstractly interpreted as the different phases of wine tasting as well: the attack, middle-range and finish.
