For the first time I do enjoy experimenting and do it with no certain goal like I usually do in my department. I am less stressed. I think I have that feeling mostly because I don’t do the experimenting alone but with the group and therefore we are talking the whole time about what we could do next and how we could improve. This interaction is really important for me in this kind of working. Mostly because I would feel not comfortable and secure. That’s how I felt sometimes when I did the experiments with the leather. Getting feedback right away gives me a better feeling.
We work very productive together. I really like the team work. We are very different from each other, especially our way of working.
I am more the quick and organized working person where as Chiara does not like to think too much about the experimentation only with her hands. Aiden likes the details in our, I think messy work.
This experimentation is really a good challenge for me, because I need to take time to see the results of our work. I can not think 2 steps ahead. There is no time to overthink and stress myself. I have to relax and enjoy the moment of experimenting.
Changing the Mixture and hoping for the best. For the first sample, I added some vinegar to oxidize it.
The one with starch became really hard and wrinkled, the one with the water pearls became the most paper like. Mine is very heavy and therefore breaks quite easy. I need to change the mixture to get the flexibility of a paper without breaking it but still have the feature of the metal powder.
Our cooperation is the paper but we mix it with our own ingredients. I mixed it with metal powder to se what happens with the texture and the property. When it was still wet it looked already really nice and shiny.

The group work
The group work and new inputs from different approaches is very refreshing and inspiring. It was fun to work together and have discussions. It makes me think in new directions and keep my process going.

Making paper. What a mess...

Magnetic leather
What did I do so far?
I started with taking apart an old and broken purse to understand how it was made.
After that I used leftover leather to do it myself.
The knowledge I gained through just taking apart was immense and so simple.
It was a lot of fun to do so and filled me with pride.
I wanted to know more about the techniques but that’s where my drive has been stopped.
Finding workshops or institutions where I can learn from an expert was not easy at all.
After going back to the design atelier of my old internship, I found my inspiration again and tried something new with leather.
I always had the feeling that LAB expects me to experiment more and do something new and innovative. But after the last two lessons I came to the conclusion that it is not about making the teachers satisfied but satisfy myself and enjoy what I do.
I need to find my passion.
Another realization I had was that I am rushing with my process and do too big steps.
I believe that has something to do that I don’t enjoy the moment of doing something, because I have a deadline and other pressures in my mind.
I am always looking towards the moment when I am done and being released from the stress.
Even though I am good in managing my time I feel always stressed.
I need time and a certain goal to work effective. And I like to work effective. I don’t mind working for hours and hours as long I am working effective and reach my goals.
So that “effective” was missing a little bit in my process because I was stopped in between.
I find it also very hard to get back in the mood of working, especially when I don’t know what to do.
All in all LAB helped me until now, maybe not to improve my skills with working with leather but to change my thinking towards my process and way of working.
