I went on an adventure today to return a pillow to IKEA with my coworker Astrid.
We were having a nice day and got stuck in traffic coming home. On the way her phone rang and she was driving so she declined the call with a sigh. “I feel so bad for him,” she said.
“You know that number?”
She did. It turns out her phone number had previously belonged to a woman named Serena. The man calling was her dad. He had Alzheimer’s and didn’t remember his daughter was dead, so he just called the number he knew was hers.
I was stricken to hear this. “Do you talk to him?”
“Yeah. Sometimes he thinks I’m her and we talk. I have a notebook with facts I’ve learned about her so I can connect with him better. Sometimes he knows I’m not her and I say I’m her friend.”
I struggled with the beauty and humanity of this for a moment. “What’s his name?”
“I don’t know; I just call him Dad.”
We sat in silence and I was overwhelmed with feelings. That she was so kind and thoughtful about this random connection. A man who called and spoke to her with love for the daughter he missed.
"One time," she added, "he called me just after I had a difficult day with my mom. I knew Serena and her mom had a rocky relationship so I talked to him about my frustrations with my own mother and he gave the following advice: ‘Everyone fails sometimes, even parents; what's important is to communicate with our loved ones, even when it's difficult.’
“I have never forgotten that advice and it healed a portion of my heart."
Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.
If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.
Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.
I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.
Writers: It's asking to read your Google Docs and be able to 'summarize' things from them and such things. I just turned all mine off.
Because this isn't mentioned above, also go to google.com/drive/settings and turn off all the annoying bits that interface directly with docs there.
This is all in the "privacy" tab of your settings. How fun that everything is hidden two layers deep. 🙄 This DOESN'T get rid of the stupid little star constantly asking you to use it, unfortunately, but that's what the picker in ublock is for. 😉
More detail instructions for OP's post for those who are confused. This is done from the browser on my laptop, I don't know what they look like on phones.
When you click the first link gemini.google.com/extensions, you need to click on the setting icon at the bottom, then choose "Extension", like this:
Scroll down a bit, you will see the options, turn them all off.
Then, you click on the second link myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, you'll see it tells you that it's already "turn off". NO! IT'S NOT! You have to click on that "Turn off" option, it'll drop down a menu like this:
Turn that thing off. Until that button shows you have to click to turn it back on like this:
And then, click on the delete button down there too, even if it says there's nothing to delete, just do it as a caution.
After you's done with those two. You go to your Drive, find the Setting button.
Click on the "Privacy" tab, choose the button "Manage Workspace smart feature setting"
Tick both of those off, then click Save. Or if you still want to use Google AI assistant for some reasons, please read the fine lines very very carefully.
Only then, you can feel safe enough with this force AI assistant bullshit. FOR NOW 🤡 All these steps still can't get rid of that Gemini blinkblink icon though >:(((((
Repeat for every one of your google accounts 💀

Cnetizen drivers (previous part here)
Cnetizens often play with the characters on the rear of cars, where the brand and model names are displayed, by adding, deleting, or altering them to form new phrases or words, creating humorous or clever wordplay.
One of my favourite things is getting to see Chinese students trying to learn English at school finally being able to shake English speakers and yell "WHY IS YOUR LANGIAGE LIKE THIS????"
More of THIS energy.
House and Senate Democrats need to lead.
You know, I haven't always agreed with Hakeem (that may be needless to say, I don't know that I've ever always agreed with any politician) but this is exactly what he is supposed to do in this situation and we gotta get behind him a thousand percent.
Remember: if we can stall long enough, sometimes we can outright prevent the thing from happening. Therefore stalling is valuable. In fact, stalling is vital. Even if you say to yourself, dude, they'll force it through next month, what's the use, well—how many people do you think can get out of the country or get out of their red state or get better prepared in a month? More than zero right? So it's worth it. When we can't stop it, we stall it.
And if you have a Democratic member of congress—please call their office and tell them that this is what you want them to do. It's just as valuable as telling them when they screw up, maybe more. Tell them that if they hold the line, we've got their backs.
At this point, call your red state people as well and tell them that you support them if they will act to prevent this bullshit from tearing us apart from one another. Do not discount the value of your voice. If it didn't matter they wouldn't be trying to silence you.
Creatives of Tumblr, share with me your wisdom: what is a good floor material for a craft room/shed/workshop?
The obvious choice is tile or wood, but as I intend to do some occasional woodcutting in there and might drop things on the floor I'm worried about damage. The practical answer is probably linoleum (hard to damage, easy to clean, resistant to staining) but I am just. So fucking sick of linoleum. I need to get all this shitty damaged el cheapo unsecured lino out in order to level the floor and if the next step is 'replace that with nicer lino', I'll do it, but I won't like it.
Polished concrete all the way. You can get it in colours if you're feeling fancy.
I've considered it but it looks really intimidating. Is it something I can do without getting a guy?
I dont know about polishing but concrete itself is dead simple:
Dig hole.
Tamp.
Build box.
Get correct amount of concret powder.
Mix in manageable batches.
Pour.
Shape.
Biggest risk is 50 lb bag too heavy for you. recommend wheelbarrow.
Concrete is incredibly easy to lay (indeed, the floor is already concrete since it's the building foundation), what I do not have is one of those huge polishing machines

Quietly losing my mind over the fact that Elon Musk has straight up orchestrated a coup of our executive branch and like....I don't even know what, if any, system we have in place to fix this. Like... He's just taken control of the money and locked out the actual appointed officials. What the fuck.
Nazis are taking over my government, and like, not even just the Nazis we fucking elected! And I'm...making hamburgers? Because somebody has to make dinner? I just feel completely unhinged.
I think that's how random civillians generally feel in these situations. Someone's gotta make dinner.
If you're wondering, there is plenty to be done about it, and plenty being done about it already, even if it's not happening instantly in a way you can perceive.
Yes. Let me break it down for you.
Reblogging because this is an excellent article that both tells you about some of what's being done and breaks it down in a way that will help you understand and think about future action. Please read!
Yo, correct me if I am wrong please, but didn't Hitler rise to power because he promised to fix the German economy and people really liked that so they looked past everything else he was doing??? Like exactly what's happening in America right now???
So many people said they voted for Trump, put a truly evil person in power, because he said he'd fix the economy, and a little voice in my head is going, "Isn't that what happened with fucking Hitler??"
But I've seen no one point that out so maybe I'm miss remembering???????
Hey. Your brain needs to de-frag. Literally it needs you to sit there and space out.
If you want your memory or executive function to improve, stare out a window at the skyline or sidewalk or trees or birds on the electrical wires for like 20+ minutes per day. (With no other stimulation like a podcast or TV if you can manage but hey baby steps innit). If you're fortunate enough to have safe outside with any bits of nature, go stare closely at a 1 meter square of grass and trip out on the bugs and shapes of grasses and stuff.
Literally this will make you smarter. Our brains HAVE TO HAVE this zone out time to do important stuff behind the scenes. This does not happen during sleep, it's something else.
That weird pressurized feeling you get sometimes might be your brain on no defrag.
Give your brain a Daily Dose Of De-Frag.
This explains so much.
Also, if you don't take the time regularly, your brain will do it for you. Usually when you're already stressed and it gets to be too much. You will zone out. And you can not control it. So regular maintenance will help

Someday your hands will be old and wrinkled, the skin spotted and bunching over your knuckles. And a child will watch you make something. It's a simple task, you'll have done it a thousand times before. But to that child, the smooth, confident way your hands move will seem like impossible magic. You have to keep living.
