Charlie loathed long days at the theater, the tired ache in his bones has been a long programmed emotion of hatred to his body.

But you loved those long days. The days you could cook him dinner and run him a bath. When you got to read him poems and wash his hair while jazz played from the stereo.

But when Charlie had a long day, all he could think about was coming home to you. How you’d rub his back and melt his cares away. He would sit in the warm water you’d run for him, smelling like strawberries and you’d smile that award winning smile at him. You’d lather his hair up and feed him bits of pita with hummus.

You’d tell him all about your day with Henry and that you wished he could’ve been there. You tell him you saved him the biggest brownie from your homemade sundaes. He’d melt against your hands, enjoying the feeling of your fingers against his scalp and the warm water rinsing his hair.

And he’d tell you about his day. He’d yell and laugh at your jokes and listen to the suggestions you’d make to calm him down. You’d pull his pjs out of the dryer and help him get dressed. You’d brush his hair and tuck him into bed, kissing all over his face to pull that big ol’ Charlie Barber smile out. “I love you.” You’d say to him quietly.

And Charlie might’ve started to like long days. Maybe even love them. When he had you there to make it better.
