things i love: the thread of art around barbara??
the art gallery && her apartment, the sirens, her gun depot. this transition from modern art to classical? chaotic, abstract art to structured, formal art? paralleling and matching her own transitions? it’s subtle and it’s amazing and it’s really important to me??
we never see her gallery. but the art in her season 1 apartment was modern. almost strictly. there were a few transitional pieces that could be considered more traditional, but generally? modern. the pieces were a combination of abstract portrait photography and abstract landscapes and abstract paintings, and can, to some degree, be viewed as barbara trying surround herself with beautiful chaos in counterpoint to her own outward expression of collected calm. modern art is chic and collectible and profitable, and a perfect vehicle for her within the art world to express herself as chic and collected and mature.
the sirens, on the other hand, begins this shift towards more traditional art, if that makes sense. the portrait photography is standard, but older. i’d estimate 1920′s to 1940′s, and female subjects, obviously. the sculptures on the walls have a 1920′s flapper look to them as well. and the paintings we see- in particular the one on the ceiling- are almost classical. together, it’s sapphic, but classic. again, a reference to her frame of mind, and obviously, suited to the club and the impression she was trying to visually make with it, using the club as an extension of her personal appearance.
and then the gun display room we’ve seen her in this season. dark colors, very lush but still formal and traditional furniture. a man’s furniture. and the artwork- military. classical and military. this business is a man’s world, and the art and decor reflects that- but at the same time, it’s also reflective of barbara’s demeanor. her behavior has changed. she’s calm, she’s again collected, but not in an outwardly chic or outgoing way. it’s quiet, and it’s subtle and she’s still using the decor around her as an extension of the clean lines and simplicity of her suit and hair cut.
and i mean…listen. all of this i obvious, but i really wanted to write it all out and bring it to people’s attention because it’s REALLY important to me, when i think about writing babs. this using art as an extension of herself. and i don’t think they talk about it enough in-show. someone really needs to notice it.
