August 24 2019 - Protesters in Hong Kong destroy surveillance lamp posts. [video]
I think people are actively aware we are being watched. Iâm not saying that I condone this action or criminal destruction, however that are making a statement about their rejection towards being watched all the time, surveyed and possible information used against them.Â
Always watching.
As a photographer, when the tool we use to create has transform into something that both protects/ invades privacy;Â the question of moral and ethics rises.Â
Sometimes the power of surveillance is to protect ones property.Â
I used to have three security cameras at my own apartment. Motion triggered, I was able to get multiple recordings of an attempted robbery of my bike right outside my front door at my apartment. 4:12 am - 4:17 am. They only tried for 5 mins and left without success right after but I was shocked at how clear the image and sound of the cameras where. After posting those on social media, including Facebook and Instagram to let my friend know of what happened, I got replied on a post I made on an app on my iPhone called âNeighboursâ. â Please share this with your local police precinct.â Neighbour 9 replied with 6 liked till today. â Neighbour23 said â Smiling Directly into the camera. Arrogant idiots!â 2 likes. Â Up till now there are 2, 358 views and counting.
Just something I wrote about the protest in Hong Kong as a Native and a photographer and artist.
Since March, the riots and protest against the Extradition Law Amendment Bill have been happening throughout the streets of Hong Kong. Never before has Hong Kong been in such disturbance. Tear gas , riot police and protestors flooded the streets. Destruction and chaos rip the city apart. Hatred and anger have taken over rational reason and logical explanation. There is guilt in me as a native of Hong Kong that I am currently not there. Born and raised in â Asiaâs safest and top financial cityâ, Hong Kong is nothing like the city I grew up in. I am not hiding, but Iâm just not there and it haunts me. I feel guilty, as a person who is passionate in documentary and street photography for not being there and I worry about my safety IF I do get the chance to be there. I have passed up the opportunities before. Seeing the continuation of violent incidents which hasnât stopped since a few months back, to earlier this week of the Police Force using large amount of crowd dispersing weapon/ equipment inside University campus grounds and in shopping malls⌠I couldnât help but wonder the role of a general observer; a Neutral Spectator especially in this emotionally fuelled time. Security one might say? But are they really neutral. Afterall they are places and purchased by someone, usually at a very strategic location. They are usually targeting a specific area with a purpose. We never really get to access and know what and where the footage and recorded information goes.

I have to absolutely agree. A few of my post disappeared after a few weeks of following and looking more into police brutality and violence in general, as well as looking more into hong kong. I donât know if Iâm being watched( of course I am ), but the fact that i didn't have very strong opinions still got  some of the post deleted...

Just some photos I managed to took when I went back to Hong Kong this summer, 2019. It was right around July; my birthday month. Also thats when the violence between the protestors, rioters and Police Force has really picked up. Fearing for my safety I never stopped at the front lines of the event.I decided to photograph the âLennon Wallsâ all over each district in Hong Kong ( there are 18 main districts in HK in total, and subdivides into smaller area in each district) . These are walls of Post-it notes that gave people an â anonymousâ was of leaving their comments, support or criticism. Some powerful words of emotions are seen. As a Hong Kong Native, it frightens me to realise how unclear the future is for us. We are on the edge of having everything that we once call normal to be taken away, replaced with something we need to get used to again. I never thought as a Hong Konger that we have a lot of culture/ historic belonging. For the past few generations Hong Kongs was seeming under this ball of passing and giving between the British, Japanese and the Chinese.Â
What is Hong Kong, To China and to the world? Where do we position? Are we a resource that is near the end of itsâ exploitable life? Did âanyoneâ truly wanted Hong Kong?Â

Digital Arts; I was working on a Surveillance related project and thought it was interesting to translate just a simple phrase into binary code; the raw form of digital communication. 1s and 0s are all there were. I copied and pased that simple phrase many many times and as it was pasting onto âTerminalâ and i tried to do a screen recording at the same time. What I saw after I saved the video was this jumble of mess of glitched out and overlapping binary codes, seeing making a weird wave in the fame.Â
The phrase is â Being watchedâÂ

The police are murdering us slowly
Teargas is the most popular choice for the police to disperse the protesters, also their preferred weapons.
Since June, there are cases where people (including protesters, journalists and passersby) were hit by the teargas can and injured.
The worst thing is, the latest batch of teargas used by the police is made in China, and journalists and experts have noticed the dioxin it releases is high, whenever the police use the teargas, they are poisoning all the people in the scene. And the chemical is also affecting the ecological environment in Hongkong.
(Trigger warning)
Dead bodies of birds, squirrels and hawks are founded in districts that were bombarded with teargas.
The use of teargas not only is damaging to people's health (dioxin can caused cancer and miscarriages) , it is having an irreversible impact on our environment.
âTear gas, by nature, is indiscriminate, and affects everyone within its reach â from those who may initiate a protest, to peaceful bystanders, to children caught up in the chaos, to law enforcement officers themselves. Young children, or those with asthma or respiratory disorders, and those who may not be able to run away quickly, are particularly at risk of serious injury. And those with previous skin, eye, or gastrointestinal problems can suffer amplified symptoms. When tear gas is used in enclosed spaces, excessive quantities are fired, or the canisters are targeted directly into a crowd or at a person, rather than at the outskirts of a gathering, these injuries can be significantly exacerbated. Symptoms can sometimes persist for long periods of time and certain individuals may be permanently disabled.â By Rohini J. Haar, MD, MPH

After police's two-day seige of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (which is not successed), and multiple protests in the city, the government still refused to call a class suspension of schools. So this morning students took MTR (Metro) to go to school only found themselves being stopped and searched by riot police for being "suspicious".
In Hong Kong, being young can get you in trouble because it is a police state.
Terrifying as I can imagine for teenagers to be facing this .Â
