Style
In the past two months I have donated an insane amount of clothes. The purge started when I was moving from my grad dorm to a new apartment. I decided to re-read Style by Lauren Conrad because I'm in the process of really adding to my wardrobe and I want to do it the right way. The right way meaning, not wasting my money on stuff I only wear once (unless it's formal or for something special of course), buying items that fits great and reflect my personal style. More of what I learned...
1. Be true to your own personal style!
I find that I look for things that are cute and comfortable. One store I fell in love with this summer was Victoria's Secret Pink. It's been awhile since the Pink brand caught my attention in a significant way. I really think the brand is evolving to encompass more than its originally intended 15-22 year old market (i.e. teaming with Nylon). Either way- they've got me hooked!
Photo below is VS Pink: 2/$40 dress with a low back tee over the top.
Another bonus: 2/$30 and 2/$40 items. You can get a dress and tee, a tank and skirt, etc. for $30-40 which is awesome. I could also see myself wearing these in future summer seasons for casual everyday wear. It was so easy to throw together outfits that were perfect to wear in the crazy DC heat.
VS Pink two for $30 skirts are below- it's so easy to make a cute outfit when they mix and match so easily with tops.
Favorite casual, every-day brands: Pink, J.Crew tees and button downs, Old Navy (for Rockstar jeans),
2. Don't buy just because the price is right!
A point in the book that I strongly identified with was how easy it is to end up spending a lot money at places like Forever21, Charlotte Russe, H&M and the like. Typically I'll go in looking for one specific kind of item- usually for a trend I want to try but don't want to spend too much on, but by time I get to checkout I have a ton of stuff that only gets worn once or twice. It's good to remember that just because you can get a ton of stuff for $100 it doesn't mean you need it or that you will ever wear it.
3. Invest in key pieces.
When I began my new job my mom got me a bunch of J.Crew sweaters and tees and they have been the key pieces for many of my outfits during the week. I highly recommend H&M for business dress at great prices. When I'm at work I like to mix it up beyond the typical DC blouse and pencil skirt. I like bold colors, matching unexpected patterns, etc.
My favorite work brands: J.Crew and some Target, H&M, AE (for pants)
I discovered these Old Navy pencil skirts through Instagrammer @mbrauns and I love them!
Target skirt, J.Crew top, Forever21 necklace
Overall the book was a great, fun read that has really helped set my mindset for future shopping!
Saying Goodbye to Lexington
Last weekend we said a temporary goodbye to Lexington. It's not permanent because I know we will continue to visit but it was still hard to say goodbye to Max's apartment. (He moved to DC earlier than his lease ended to start his second year internship in the DC/VA area.) When Max suggested visiting to tidy things up before the lease ended it didn't take very much convincing. We left DC as soon as we could that Friday and headed to one of our favorite places. The photo above was taken that Sunday in Max's room right before we left.
We have so many good memories at the apartment and in the town. At the time, our long distance relationship was so much more bearable knowing we could spend the weekend together in such a relaxing, welcoming, beautiful town. We still had our share of adjustments to deal with. I'll never forget getting so overwhelmed the first time we tried to make plans to see each other- "there's no train to Lexington?!?!". Had to figure that one out really fast.
It's the place where our relationship really transformed. For the first time we were together, just Max and myself, as adults living on our own. When we moved from Florida we had no idea how we would change as individuals in the following two years. I like to think we have grown a lot but I know we still have a lot to learn. (Photo above is my promise ring from Max.)
The park next to the apartment where we took photos before all the law school formals. And it's the place we first talked about marriage, in a "this could really happen" kind of way. :)
We got breakfast at Southern Inn (yum!).
And we visited a place that had this beautiful porch and a stunning view of the mountains. Lexington is forever the town I associate with love and happiness. Except for the fact that everything closes so early- that should change! ;) Also, best gelato I've ever had is from a place in town called Pronto. If you are driving through the area definitely go there!
McKee-Beshers Sunflower Fields
WATCH VIDEO HERE. :)
About two weeks ago we took a daytrip to McKee-Beshers sunflower farm in Maryland. It was well worth the drive! The scene reminded me of the famous sunflowers in Provence, France. Plus, sunflowers are my favorite!
The video was made entirely by us. We didn't have any assistance besides a tripod, my camera and a wireless remote. One day it would be awesome to have someone else make a cute video of us, but til then I'm happy with the way this one turned out.
My ootd for this daytrip: Victoria's Secret PINK 2/$20 light blue tee, Hollister shorts and a Forever21 light blue cami. Plus my MK initial necklace that I got from GroopDealz.com. I also wore my Sperry rainboots after reading tips online that the ground would probably be muddy. Best idea! We did come home covered in pollen and dirt though. And YES the view was awesome from Max's shoulders. :)
The song in the video is "Comme les Enfants" (As Children), plus we had French Market lemonade and French style popcorn!
The sunflowers were unreal. Pictures just cannot capture how incredible they really were. For as far as your eye could see there were giant sunflowers facing you.
We searched desperately for a table to have our picnic at (the ground was wet from rain earlier in the week). And it just happened that we found this one with M+K carved in it.
Oh, and I brought the vintage Polaroid camera that Max got me for Valentine's day two years ago. He had also bought me the Project Impossible film so we were actually able to use it! You can see it in action in the video. Out of the four photos we snapped only two turned out decent. It seems that the roller inside the camera is a bit weak and we didn't protect the film from the sun the very second it came out of the camera.
This day trip was so much fun, and if you live nearby I highly recommend taking a visit sometime. Directions and details can be found here.
Very pretty (and handsome) ending to a happy Sunday together.
Limited Edition Birchbox "Mass Appeal"
As soon as I saw Birchbox post about limited edition boxes I was so excited! And to know that the products inside are all Beauty Award winners from CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women)? Even better! I used Birchbox points so I got both boxes for free. This first post is the Mass Appeal box.
I just received the boxes, so I'm not reviewing these products yet. I will post reviews for anything I really end up loving. In the meantime I wanted to give you an idea of what the boxes are like. They are limited edition so if you want them, take a look & then order right away!
Here's the link where you can find the Mass Appeal box on Birchbox.
A line up of everything. I think this box is a great mix of skincare and beauty items. To me, using great skincare comes first. I think it makes more sense to try to gain healthy skin and use beauty products as needed or just for fun.
Burt's Bees Ultimate Hand Cream.
L'Oreal Infallible eyeshadow in Golden Emerald. Can I just say how happy I am I got this shade? In the preview for this box on the website a bright blue color is shown, which just isn't my style. I was sooo glad I received a color I'd actually use.
A better look at the color.
Nivea Moisture Rich lip care. Yes, please!
Oh, and I LOVE this. I've wanted to buy a Just Bitten Kissable lip stain for so long. And what a great color! It's just the right kind of pink and I think it could work in any season. I already put a bit on and I really love it. So far, it's not drying at all and the color is staying in place. The color shown above 020 Lovesick.
And last but not least, two skincare samples. My allergies in DC are crazy so I really can't wait to try to the Simple eye roll-on. And while I know that drugstore skincare can only do so much to fade away sun spots and the like, it's still nice to try this product for free and see how well it works instead of buying it full size and possibly wasting my money.
Next post: The Prestige Headliners box...
Limited Edition Birchbox: Prestige Headliners
These limited edition Birchbox boxes are "a special collection of finalists and winners from the 2013 Beauty Insiders' Choice Awards." Many of them are quite affordable their full size and you can buy both boxes for $26. See my previous post to view the other box, Mass Appeal.
This box was the cheaper box ($12, the orange box is $18) but I definitely wanted to give both a try. Again, I used my reward points to get these for free. You earn 1 point for every dollar you spend with Birchbox (100 points = $10) and each product you review from your subscription box is worth 10 points!
Here's a look at what's inside the box. Yes, I know you can see the items on the website as well, but sometimes it's nice to see the shapes and sizes of the samples you are getting. Here's the link to check it out on the Birchbox website.
These are excellent sample sizes and I'm excited to them all!
Julep cuticle oil and polish in a pretty lilac, "Rebecca". I'm trying to keep my nails nice and pretty lately (future surprise engagement on my mind!).
The Living Proof hair primer has always intrigued me. It's supposed to keep your hair fresh and clean longer. The La Fresh face wipes worried me at first since I noticed that they were scented. However, in the ingredients the scent comes from the natural ingredients so I'm definitely okay with trying it out.
This is a pricey full size product ($79) and it's an anti-aging SPF and moisturizer.
This product alone makes the whole box totally worth it. Lately, I have been really into doing my eyebrows (they really do frame your whole face) and I can't wait to try this Brow Power by It Cosmetics. It Cosmetics makes my favorite go-to mascara for getting dressed up.
A City Picnic
Today appreciation was really on my mind, especially how thankful I am for Max and everything he does for me. I planned a little "city picnic" (blanket on a table on the rooftop of our building) so we could enjoy this Wednesday evening outside eating yummy food and enjoying each other's company.
Hello, sunny summer sky!
I made a quick stop at our local Whole Foods to get a rotisserie herb roasted chicken, raw 'garlicky' kale and macaroni salad. Quick, easy and perfect for a day like today.
I also grabbed dessert: fresh peaches and some chocolate chip mini muffins.
"Happiness is only real when shared." - Christopher McCandless
This blanket belonged to my Grandma. I am pretty sure that she actually made it herself and I am always happy to use it, including in the fall for added coziness. (Which BTW this summer has never had me so excited for fall, I'm already admiring some cute chilly weather clothes.)
So, what can I say? Think about how you can show those you love that you appreciate them. Even if it's just a simple note or going out of your way for them somehow. It's worth it. :)

Project Life: Getting Started
Moving into a city studio apartment has taught me many things. The value of having counter space, how to use what is really one room for three separate living spaces and last but not least: that I have TOO MUCH stuff! I have been purging clothes, shoes and frankly plain old junk from my belongings for weeks now.
Besides clothes, the things I love are books and my scrapbooking stuff. Sadly in two years living on my own I have only put together a few scrapbook pages. Traditionally, a scrapbook page can take at least a hour to a few hours, and sometimes a few days if you are working with paint and other similar supplies. That requires two things I don't have enough of: time and space (like a large desk to spread out supplies).
I have found the answer to my creative problem...Project Life! This post features how I'm getting started and the July Studio Calico Project Life kit.
(Disclaimer: purchased with my own money, everything on my blog is unless otherwise noted.)
What is Project Life? In a nutshell, Project Life is a scrapbooking system that incorporates a 12x12 binder and plastic dividers to hold photos, journaling and other memorabilia from each week of your life. That's really it!
Here's how it goes...Snap photos with your phone throughout the week. Journal a little bit each day using an app in your phone or a journal. Crop, edit and save them. Select your favorite photos from the week and print them out with your preferred at home printer or printing service. Place photos into pockets, journal on the journaling cards and you are done!
So first things first, check out some of the examples I've linked below and see if you connect with the look and feel of Project Life.
Examples of pages here, here, and here.
Okay, awesome, right? Continue on to see how I started & how easy it can be for you to start as well!
There are a couple of benefits to this:
You won't need a ton of time
You can use photos you snap and edit with your phone
It looks really cool, kind of like a time capsule of your life
It helps capture everyday life
Because the divider layouts are preset, it is nearly effortless to get a really nice looking page
It costs less than traditional scrapbooking
Supplies There are a ton of different products out there specifically made for Project Life. It can be really overwhelming so I suggest buying enough supplies for ONE month. See how you like it before you commit to purchasing a year's worth of supplies.
Here's what I bought:
One pack of dividers in Design A, $6 with free shipping from Amazon Prime
One Studio Calico Kit about $25 (with shipping), provides one month of supplies.
If you have never scrapbooked before, please know that getting a whole month's worth of supplies for around $30 is INCREDIBLE.
Notice that I did not even buy a 12x12 binder yet. All you need to start out is the dividers and some supplies. I decided to buy a kit because everything is pre-cut and whatnot. You could size and cut your own supplies but again, if you are saving time, then buy a kit.
OR make a one time purchase of $30 for one of the theme Core Kits (months worth of supplies!
Other expenses to consider: Where or how will you print your photos?
Tips I've read quite a few blog posts about how to get started so in sum I'd like to offer the top tips here:
If you get behind...Make Project Life work for you. If something comes up and you get behind by a week or so, don't worry about it! You can always print those photos later. A good idea is to take your layout and place post-it notes to remind yourself of which photos you wanted to use on that page.
You want personal journaling...Keep a journal with you everywhere you go, or someplace you will remember to write in everyday and write a sentence or so about each day. You can also look back at captions you used when you posted your photo to Instagram (or other social site). This also helps to remember details if you get behind.
Take photos everyday of stuff you love! That means, people, things, etc. Include photos from magazines, ticket stubs and anything else that is meaningful or entertaining to you. One of the examples I linked included a page that had a photo of a favorite tv show. Anything goes!
Here's an example of a journaling/decorative card. Here's a link to Elizabeth Kartchner used this kit.
For now I plan to print my photos at my local CVS and see how it goes. There are personal printers and online printing options that are well suited for this project but until I know I am really going to stick with this I plan to print photos as needed.
I highly recommend the Studio Calico kits if you like a modern eclectic feel. Their products are always high quality and did you see how cute the box is that it comes in? It's perfect for storing all your supplies. Besides what it came with I'll be using scissors, double sided tape and a pen to journal with.
The way I see it, my blog is already a sort of Project Life. However, I really want that hands-on experience of crafting. Also, there are some photos and thoughts that I do not want to share on the internet so keeping them tucked away in the binder for this project feels more comfortable and personal.

Being Tourist-y in DC
Fourth of July weekend Max's dad came to visit us in DC and we spent the weekend indulging in fun tourist activities. Many of them were firsts for us as well including a much needed visit to Eastern Market!
Pear-E-Grin, get it? I've mentioned Peregrine before and how they have the best espresso. Well they outdid themselves with this "Purple Rain" espresso featuring plum and ginger-miso cream.
We fell in love with these original watercolor paintings, met the artist and even in the super hot weather we admired these forever.
Handmade lanterns from Turkey.
I feel like these soaps should be sold at Lush!
We also visited the WWII memorial and the Air and Space museum where we bought astronaut ice cream and I enjoyed watching Max and his dad go crazy over all the cool planes and whatnot. I mean, I was into it too...for the first 2 hours...but I'm pretty sure we were there 4 or 5 hours total, ha.
Outfit details: Victoria's Secret PINK 2/30 tee and PINK yoga shorties and Lululemon Run to Work backpack.
This photo of us was taken at the end of our very long, but very fun day. :)
Other highlights: finding an awesome place for dinner in Chinatown, seeing Max's Grandpa's dedication at the WWII memorial and getting gelato at Pitango!
Walgreens Beauty Center
I stumbled upon such an amazing find last night! Behold the awesome and pretty Walgreens beauty center! (I'm not sure if that's officially what they are called but I couldn't find any other information about it online.)
The space is upstairs and sells only skincare and beauty products.
The look and feel of this store is extremely similar to how drugstore beauty is sold in Japan. Just because these are drugstore products doesn't mean shopping for them has to be a drag. Honestly, I have found many Sephora stores to be quite intimidating and SO expensive! Great makeup, and even skincare, does not need to be expensive, especially the everyday items.
There are SO many brands available! I even found Boots No. 7 which sells of my favorite serums.
Everything was organized, clean and glowing (thanks LED lights!).
The only downside that I notice is that there does not seem to be any beauty club or way to earn discounts. (**Correction- Thank you to Catie from catiejean,tumblr.com for letting me know there is a rewards system! $1 reward for every 1000 points.) At CVS you get back $5 for every $50 you spend and there's tons of other sales on beauty and skincare every week. I didn't notice that here. I'll be visiting again to take a closer look and talk to an associate to learn more. After searching online there seems to be a sample beauty box that you can get if you spend $30 in store: information here.
Overall I loved the look and feel of this store. I think they have some awesome brands that I already love and probably a few more that I could end up becoming favorites. Have you been to one of these beauty centers?
Happy Fourth of July!
This Independence day was so much fun! It was Max's first time celebrating the holiday in DC and as expected, it is a great place to be on the Fourth of July. We rode our bikes all day which made getting around so easy. The crowds were crazy and the weather was insanely hot.
We first rode to the National Mall and saw a bit of the parade. Our real reason for heading down there was to attend the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. In a nutshell: it was awesome. There was so much to do and see. They featured Hungarian folklife and a dozen other endangered languages and cultures from around the world.
Outfit details: Victoria's Secret PINK racerback tank top (with lace sides) and bandeau.
We had an impromptu picnic on the lawn near the Washington Monument. For lunch we had chicken in a traditional Hungarian paprika sauce with pasta.
A wooden replica of a Hungarian pavilion crossed with Chrysler building. Yeah...I'm not sure either...
There were lectures, interactive stations, dance lessons, performances and more.
Hungarian Puli dog sculpture.
And now part two...
A friend of Max's invited us downtown to view the fireworks from a rooftop so not only did we find somewhere to enjoy the event but we got to spend it with some awesome people.
Outfit details: Forever21 basic tee, Old Navy rockstar jeans and I curled my hair with a one inch Nume curling wand.
And yes, we biked downtown. Met up with friends and had a great night! We ended the evening with drinks and food from Founding Farmers, which is a favorite to many Washingtonians. :)
Last year Max was in Cambodia (where I think he went out for burgers and fries that night!) and I was in DC, so this year was extra special since we got to celebrate together. We dreamed of one day living in DC and I'm so glad we are here this year! And I'm excited for what's to come.
"I'm thankful for my country. Although we have many weaknesses and many unacknowledged failures, we also have strengths and virtues with which to face our challenges. I very much like President Obama's repeated use of the phrase "more perfect union," because it reminds us that every nation is in process, growing, developing, moving from one level of imperfection to another, maturing (over the long run) toward greater goodness. We are bound to one another - within nations and among nations. And not only that: we are bound to past and future generations, having received a multi-faceted heritage from our ancestors that we can enhance (or squander) for our descendants. Today, as fireworks explode and patriotic songs play, I hope we all can ponder our connectedness and rededicate ourselves to the ongoing work of perfecting and maturing our union." - Brian McLaren (via Kristellys Zolondek on Facebook)
Meridian Hill Park, Crepes & Zombies
We spent all day Saturday spontaneously exploring DC.
Instagram had also just launched the video feature so I filmed a clip from each place we went with my iPod. Unlike photos, you have to post videos right away, otherwise they only save to your device. I did not realize this but I was able to upload & share them here. :) The links will open in new windows.
Video #1 (here).
Peregrine Espresso on 14th Street NW
Max l-o-v-e-s espresso and he says this place is great. I even tried a little taste and I liked it! That's saying a lot since espresso usually tastes so sour to me. We also tried their green tea and were very tempted to try the sweet potato biscuit and spicy chocolates.
My lovely bike.
This was the day I got used to riding on the streets. It's was little nerve wracking with buses and taxis around, but I've been walking everywhere for the past two years and it is awesome to get places so quickly by bike. I never thought I'd like biking in the city but it is really a lot of fun and convenient.
Video #2 (here)
Meridian Park: A National Historic Landmark noted as "an outstanding accomplishment of early 20th-century Neoclassicist park design in the United States".
It's beautiful.
It's well maintained (no garbage sitting around, public restrooms, water fountains).
Lots of spots for big groups or just sitting by yourself. There's plenty of room to have your own space for a picnic or sit down and read.
Surprisingly quiet. Even on a Saturday with people all around, it was relatively quiet and peaceful.
Great spot for running because of all the steps and pathways. There are 3 or 4 levels to the park.
An awesome view at the very top.
And last but not least: Video #3 (here)
...which is us stopping for savory and sweet crepe at Point Chaud Cafe. They were pretty good! We tried the Nutella with strawberry and banana and a turkey with cheese and cranberry sauce. Both were quite good and were a perfect snack. I will definitely be going back!
My favorite flower! I don't know what it is about sunflowers but I love them. They are happy, simply pretty and while being beautiful they also serve a great purpose for farming (sunflower butter, oil, etc). They also remind me of my favorite time of year- that mid-point between summer and fall in August.
We ended the night with a double date with a really sweet couple. We went to see World War Z (great movie!).
Writing this post really makes me wish it was the weekend again... :)

Random Life Adventures
Just a quick post with random pics from our errand run last night.
Passing by two of my favorites in DC: the US Institute of Peace and the Lincoln Memorial. Bottom right is the Subaru filled with groceries from Trader Joe's.
We make a list of what we want to eat for breakfast and dinner each day for that week (lunch is on our own since we are both at work) that way we do not end up getting a bunch of food that goes to waste. So far it's worked great and by the end of the week it's clear that we need to go food shopping again. We're always stocked on basics and things we could eat if there were an emergency, but fresh veggies, fruit and meat we plan out.
An impromptu visit to Silver Diner where we listened to oldies and without hesitation I ordered breakfast for dinner. Silver Diner has updated their entire menu and they have tons of healthy meal options. Basically it gives you the feel of a diner and (mostly) American food, but the dishes are not greasy, typical diner foods.
Last but not least, we stopped at H Mart, a Korean supermarket in Falls Church, Virginia. This is where we bought our fresh mackerel! Bottom left is the cutest little tupperware. I love cute Korean and Japanese packaging. And the right: all the candy and treats! No idea how I left without buying any but that's okay since we found lots of other great ingredients that we used for our Japanese breakfast (found in this post).
Where somehow going food shopping becomes this crazy fun thing for us. It's always been this way. We go out to pick something up and we've ended up at parks, farms, random stores, stargazing in the middle of the road on the Blue Ridge Mountains...haha I could go on and on. I love it.
(Random pic from December 2012)
I do realize that these photos may mean very little to anyone else, but I think our regular evenings are still something I want to always remember. It's the everyday stuff that makes life, life.
A Japanese Breakfast: Miso Soup and Saba Shioyaki
Lately I have wanted to mix things up a bit for breakfast. Our eggs, potatoes, fruit, etc are really great but I wanted to try having fish in the morning. Since Japan is always on my mind I wondered what the average Japanese breakfast consisted of and decided to give it a shot. Max made the mackerel (saba in Japanese) and I made the miso soup!
In this post are direct links to each of the recipes we used and a list of the ingredients used. The meal was miso soup, white rice and broiled (in our case baked) mackerel with green and white iced tea.
I found my miso soup recipe through YouTube beauty vlogger Melodee Morita. The miso soup recipe begins at the 7 minute mark. This link will start the video at that point.
Everything you need:
Water and a pot
Silky, soft tofu - $4 I couldn't find the silky tofu at Trader Joe's but the next time I make this I will absolutely use that kind. It makes a big difference in texture.
Dried and cut wakame - $3 This gets thrown into the boiling water and it expands to soft, leathery seaweed. Really yummy and good for you, too!
Miso base such as Umami select. - $3 There are many different varities of miso paste and you will need to start with 2 tablespoons and add more to your taste. I ended up using double that amount since the Umami brand seemed to have a weaker flavor.
White rice
Mackerel - $3.50 for a whole fish, feeds 2
Iced tea - Make yourself with tea bags or buy from Trader Joe's - $2.50
For the white rice we used our Tiger rice cooker. We ended up getting this for $40, barely used! It's awesome.
My tip: add the white rice to the miso soup, it's really good.
For our drink we tried this iced tea. It has NO sugar and it's a combination of two teas that are fantastic for your health.
Here are three really great recipes for making Japanese Shiyoyaki.
The exact recipe we used (easy)
Easy recipe - Saba Shioyaki = grilled mackerel
Detailed recipe - Saba Nitsuke = simmered mackerel
We bought our mackerel at H Mart, a Korean supermarket in Falls Church, Virginia. Since we had never made this dish we didn't know to ask for the fish to be cut into filets. The slices worked out okay but the filet cut is ideal! At H Mart they literally cut and cleaned the fish for us.
The final miso soup! I found these bowls and spoons at H Mart as well. Perfect, right?
Breakfast was really delicious and I could see this becoming a regular breakfast in the colder months.
