Coined Term: “Fuel High”

1. Which events or social phenomena have you observed that made you come up with your word? How did these events help you create the word?

The events or social phenomena that we've chosen is the current price hike of fuel due to Russia's invasion in Ukraine which triggered a global price over concerns of a supply crunch.

3. Which aspects have you considered in defining the social phenomena? What made you choose the word/s for your coined term?

We considered fuel as the subject of the social phenomena and high to describe its recent price hike.

Pandemic Situation and Response

We all—probably—went through this phase. Freed from all the responsibility over our shoulders, finally getting that sleep you’ve been begging to get and when it was already there. Right in front of us, we snatched that opportunity, and for a second, we thought that yeah, this pandemic won’t last too long; might as well nab that chance before it disappears.

Well, I guess we all took it, and now we’re on the 23rd month of the pandemic; hopefully we are still hanging on after that long-awaited nap.

The satirical technique that we used in this meme is ridicule and humor. Ridiculing something that we can all relate to, humoring the fact that we’ve been stuck in the same place throughout the last 2 years. The meme feels more like a comfort that makes us realize that we are all in the same situation together, and we find it funny to know that this is what happened when all we wanted was a quick break.

However, there are other issues underneath this meme. Hidden within are our struggles; perhaps it’s not just the feeling of desperation to get out of your house and party with your friends or meet up with someone you like, but as well as the mental illnesses, the anxiety, and the other cons that we have had throughout these months.

But perhaps this meme could help lighten that baggage?

Concept Map

Our concept map is simple, showing us the causes of climate change and how its effects relate to infectious diseases.

The top left corner tells us what causes climate change, such as air pollution, the emission of greenhouse gas concentrations, along with the gas emissions from cars and trucks, urbanization, and deforestation.

While at the bottom right corner tells us its effects. One of it is habitat lost because the more we use nature for our needs such as more space for more infrastructures and buildings to be built, the more the animals need to find a place that fits them, which causes them to come in contact to us, and the more this happens, the greater the likelihood for infectious diseases to spread. Large livestock operations can also cause emerging infections because 70% of infectious diseases come from  wildlife. And the higher the population density is, the more likely that people will have the risk of spreading any communicable diseases.

The Post-Pandemic Barangay

Our barangay has a simple layout. We have a temperature checkpoint by the entrance to make sure that those who comes in and out don't have the virus or has the symptoms of Covid-19. We also have a clinic used to provide heal service to sick members of the barangay or to those who entered with the possible symptoms of it. Behind it is the Storage area where we store medical supplies as well as relief goods for the people in the barangay. Then the Barangay Hall is located at the front in case of urgent concerns.

Next we have the Public Park and Parking lot, a public area for the members of the Barangay but can also be used as a quarantine area. Then we have Waste Bins commonly placed all over the barangay to ensure that all wastes are disposed properly. And lastly the houses, the living areas of the members of the barangay.

As the days go by

The sun still sets and rises

The stillness in the breeze ignites familiarity

Free from the anxiety that I feel whenever I walk through those halls

I was content with what I had inside the house

At least the silence could listen to me sing and shout.

Now I can pour my heart out with the music

Now I don't need to worry about school life and such, the classics

However there is sometimes that aching feeling inside my chest starts to rise

Like sometimes it misses not being stuck on my bed all the time.

Instead of letting the silence rock me and tumble

I found that I was capable of weaving my words of sorrow

Stitch and style, manipulate them as I please

Until I was left with raging waves of passion and memories.

It kept my thoughts at bay whenever I'm down

It kept me on my feet whenever I have a frown

It doesn't care how much emotions I pour into each piece

It helped me surpass this problems, like it was nothing but a beat.
