fifteen posts later, one thing has become very clear:

films are much more than something we watch for two hours.

through quotes, reviews, discussions, and creative prompts, we learned that films can help us understand emotions, different perspectives, and even ourselves. a single scene or line of dialogue can stay in our minds long after the credits end.

we also learned that everyone experiences films differently. one person might connect with a character, while another notices the cinematography, music, or themes. there is rarely one “correct” interpretation, and that is part of what makes film discussions so interesting.

another lesson is that some of the most memorable films are not always the biggest or most popular. many quieter films leave the strongest impressions because they feel personal and authentic.

creating this blog also showed us how much storytelling matters. whether it is through a film, a quote, a photograph, or a blog post, stories help people connect with ideas and experiences beyond their own lives.

finally, we learned that film is everywhere. it can inspire art, design, writing, conversations, and even imaginary ideas like holidays, schools, and cinemas. films do not always end when the screen goes black. sometimes they continue through the thoughts and discussions they leave behind.

the logo for pearl films was designed to match the atmosphere of the blog itself. soft, slightly nostalgic, and inspired by old film photography.

the background is a light pink color, which gives the design a calm and dreamy feeling. around the logo, there are strips of film scattered in different directions. this connects directly to cinema and gives the design a vintage style, almost like finding old photographs or memories tucked away somewhere.

in the center, there is a pearl with the words “pearl films” wrapped around it in blue lettering. the pearl represents something small but valuable, which connects to the way films can leave meaningful impressions on people even through quiet moments. the shiny texture also gives the logo a reflective feeling, which matches the thoughtful tone of the blog.

the curved text makes the design feel less formal and more creative. instead of looking perfectly structured, it feels more personal and artistic, which suits the style of the posts.

overall, the logo was meant to feel soft, cinematic, and slightly nostalgic, just like the kinds of films and ideas shared on pearl films.

pearl films ✧ — post #013: thoughts on the 2026 cannes film festival

lately, one of the biggest topics in film has been the Cannes Film Festival and the way this year’s lineup feels much quieter and more focused on international and independent cinema instead of major hollywood premieres. a lot of people expected huge blockbuster films again, but this year feels more centered on directors with very distinct styles and personal storytelling.

personally, i think that makes the festival more interesting.

sometimes film discussions become too focused on celebrity appearances or box office numbers, and the actual storytelling gets ignored. this year’s lineup includes directors like Hirokazu Kore-eda, Pedro Almodóvar, and Asghar Farhadi, whose films usually focus more on emotions and human relationships than spectacle.  

at the same time, it is understandable why some people think the festival feels less exciting this year. big premieres often bring more attention to cinema as a whole, especially online. without those huge mainstream moments, some people feel disconnected from the festival completely.  

another interesting thing is how much conversation there has been around films that feel experimental or unusual. one of the films getting attention is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma by Jane Schoenbrun, which people are describing as surreal and deeply personal.   i think films like this show that audiences are becoming more open to stories that feel strange or emotionally complicated instead of perfectly polished.

overall, this year’s cannes festival feels more reflective than glamorous. maybe that is not everyone’s idea of exciting, but personally, i think cinema becomes more memorable when filmmakers take creative risks instead of trying to appeal to everyone.

if we could start our own school or academy, it would probably be called the afterlight academy.

it would not feel like a normal school. the classrooms would be small, quiet, and filled with books, old film posters, and soft lighting. instead of bright white walls and rows of desks, there would be comfortable chairs, projectors, and spaces made for discussion and creativity.

the academy would focus on films, writing, photography, and storytelling. students would learn how movies create emotion through lighting, music, dialogue, and camera angles. classes would include watching films and talking about their meanings instead of only memorizing information.

there would also be lessons about editing, script writing, and film analysis. students could create short films of their own and share them with others. the goal would not be perfection, but self expression and creativity.

the atmosphere would be calm and welcoming. people would be encouraged to share opinions and ideas without feeling judged. everyone would have different interpretations of films, and that would be seen as something valuable.

overall, the academy would be a place where people can appreciate storytelling and learn how films connect to emotions, memories, and everyday life.

the best spokesperson for pearl films would probably be someone calm, thoughtful, and slightly mysterious. not someone overly loud or dramatic, because the blog focuses more on emotions, atmosphere, and meaning in films.

someone like Saoirse Ronan would fit well because many of her films feel emotional and personal. the characters she plays often feel realistic and relatable, which matches the tone of the blog.

Emma Chamberlain could also work because her style feels authentic and reflective. the way she talks about life and emotions feels natural, which matches the calm and personal atmosphere of the blog. even though she is not mainly known for films, her aesthetic and personality fit the feeling of pearl films very well.

another good choice could be Greta Gerwig because her films focus on emotions, relationships, and growing up in a very honest way. her directing style feels creative but still personal, which matches the atmosphere of pearl films.

overall, the best spokesperson would be someone connected to stories and emotions in a genuine way. someone whose presence feels memorable and comforting at the same time.

if we had ฿5,000,000, we would probably use it to create something related to films that people can enjoy, not just for entertainment but also for the experience.

one idea is to open a small cinema. it would not be a huge or fancy one like in malls, but a simple and comfortable space. the seats could be soft, the lighting warm, and the environment quiet so people can focus on the film. it would be designed to feel relaxing and different from normal cinemas.

our main inspiration for this project is an already existing film theatre called “skyline film bkk” in Bangkok. we would want to create a similar space on a rooftop with a familiar ambience, showcasing the city view of Bangkok while enjoying comforting movies.

we would choose to show films that are meaningful or interesting, not just popular ones. for example, coming of age films, emotional films, or films that make people think more deeply. this would help people see movies in a different way.

the money could also be used to create a blog connected to the cinema. on the blog, we would post reviews, quotes, and thoughts about the films we show. this would allow people to reflect on what they watched and share ideas with others.

some of the budget could be used to keep ticket prices low, so more people can come. maybe there could even be free screenings sometimes.

overall, the goal would be to create a place where people can enjoy films in a calm environment and take something meaningful away from the experience, not just watch and leave.

it would fall on a day where nothing else is expected of you. maybe sometime in the colder months, when the light fades early and everything feels slower. a day meant for staying in, for letting time stretch a little.

the “rules” would be simple:

watch a film that has stayed with you

or finally press play on one you have been saving

keep your phone away, let the film have your full attention

when it ends, sit in the silence for a while

people might light a lamp, make something warm to drink, close the curtains early. cinemas would still be open, but softly. no crowds rushing in or out, just a few people scattered in the dark, each watching something different.

afterwards, maybe you write something down. not a full review. just a sentence, or even a single word. something you felt but cannot quite explain.

the holiday would not have a loud name. maybe something like

still frame day

or the afterglow/afterlight

it would be a day for slowing down and letting stories settle. for noticing the details that usually pass too quickly. for holding onto a moment a little longer before it fades.

some films don’t need to shout to be heard. they leave behind quiet sentences..ones that settle somewhere deep and stay there.

there’s something almost overwhelming about the honesty in this line. it’s not polished or careful, rather it’s intense, vulnerable, and impossible to hide behind. love here isn’t subtle; it’s something that demands to be said, even at the risk of everything. it reminds you that real feelings don’t always arrive neatly. they arrive all at once.

if there was anything we’d take out of film…

ㅤ♡ If there was something you could take out of film, what would it be?ㅤ

For us, this was surprisingly a pretty easy question for us to answer and, sure, although there are many things that we’d like to change about film, this stuck out to us. If we could change one things about film, we’d completely take the ability to use AI for films. In our past blogs, we’ve talked about the pros and cons about using AI for films, which is probably why it stuck out to us so much. When watching films, it is often that we get amazed by what one could think about, picture, then bring to life. Incredible films are made by the combination of several human minds, which we believe should be appreciated even more. Instead of using AI, we also believe that using peoples real life stories to possibly give them justice, open peoples minds, or simply just to tell a story. We understand that AI could help a lot by providing guidance, making new ideas, or even to generate certain scenes, but, based off of what we have seen, we believe that films that haven’t used AI seem to be the best, usually because of the attention to detail, the dedication, and most importantly, it comes from the human mind and heart. This is what we think, and we’d love to hear your ideas too. (Please keep in mind that this is our own opinion and we will respect yours as well, please feel free to comment!)

if we could meet anyone from the past or present, who would it be?

If we could meet anyone, it would be James cameron. We believe that most people would choose based off of the best films, best plots, or even based off the amount of films a filmmaker has made. We chose based off of how the filmmaker thinks. What does this mean? James cameron made the movie Avatar, an incredible movie about blue tall creatures called “Na’vi” that are invaded by “sky people” aka, humans.

This movie not only portrays what happens in our very own wold, but they decide to make the movies completely without AI. Infact, they are completely against AI. We believe that one of the reasons of why the movie is so successful is because they don’t use AI. Although there are other filmmakers that may not use AI, James cameron’s film is beyond any movie we’ve ever seen that uses animation and doesn’t use AI. (This is solely based of our own opinions, its okay if yours is not the same) Whats your favorite film makers, and why?

Here are five common myths about films and the truth behind them.

Myth #1: Movies are filmed in order from beginning to end. - Truth: Most films are actually shot out of order depending on location, schedule, and actor availability. They are put together later during editing. Doesn’t it sound a bit confusing? - My Opinion: I think this is interesting because it shows how important editing is. It also makes me respect actors more since they have to act emotional scenes without filming the earlier parts first.

Myth #2: Actors perform all their own stunts. - Truth: Many dangerous scenes are done by stunt doubles. Some actors like Tom Cruise are known for doing many of their own stunts, but this is not common. - My Opinion: I think stunt doubles deserve more credit because they risk their safety to make movies exciting. Honesty my favorite scene was when Tom Cruise had jumped on a moving airplane for one of his stunts and he didn’t do it with a stunt-double.

Myth #3: Everything you see in a movie is real. - Truth: Many scenes use CGI and green screens. For example, Avengers: Endgame used heavy visual effects to create action scenes. - My Opinion: I think CGI is amazing, but sometimes too much of it can make movies feel less realistic. Yet avatar is one of my favorite movies and they used a ton of CGI for the movie.Myth: Big-budget movies are always successful.

Myth #4: Directors control everything in a movie. - Truth: Movies are a team effort. Writers, producers, editors, and many other crew members help create the final product. - My Opinion: I believe teamwork is the most important part of filmmaking because one person cannot do everything alone. It also allows people to make more connections.

Myth #5: Big-budget movies are always successful. - Truth: Even movies with huge budgets can fail if audiences don’t like the story. - My Opinion: I think a good story matters more than a big budget because people remember meaningful films, not just expensive ones. Personally I love films based off of real life stories, I love to hear other peoples perspectives and experiences and some films remind me that I should be grateful for what I have.

how AI can impact the film industry

In the future, there will be a rise in AI production and content. Why? AI is being adopted in film making to dramatically increase efficiency, lowering production costs, and to enhance creative possibilities. AI automates tedious, time-consuming tasks like rotoscoping, noise reduction, and footage editing, this allows filmmakers to create work quicker than ever. Not only is using AI efficient, but it also provides more ideas and could help produce a wider variety of ideas. It seems like AI could help a lot, but are people really happy with using AI? Numerous articles have come out saying that AI most likely would replace people’s jobs including filmmaking.

Not just that, but there have been films that have used AI and have been criticized tremendously. From my perspective, even if there are pros and cons to using AI in film making, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an increase in using AI. AI has taken multiple jobs already, and it seems that filmmaking could be one of the jobs AI may takeover as well. What are your guys’ thoughts?

honestly, popcorn just makes it better.

it feels strange to start a movie without it. once you have a bowl in your hands, it feels planned. like you chose this film and this moment instead of just letting something play in the background.

the crunch fills quiet scenes in a comforting way. during tense parts, you grab another handful without thinking. it keeps your hands busy so you’re not reaching for your phone every few minutes.

and the flavors kind of match your mood. classic butter when you want something simple and familiar. caramel when you’re watching something soft or nostalgic. cheese popcorn for chaotic comedies or loud movie nights with friends. kettle corn when you want that sweet and salty mix during a late-night film that feels a little emotional.

even the smell settles into the room. later, when you remember the movie, you’ll probably remember that too. the warmth of the bowl. the salt or sugar on your fingers. how you kept eating without noticing.

it sounds small, but small rituals make things feel different.

this is the first post on pearl films, a little corner of tumblr where i’ll be reviewing movies that linger—quietly or loudly—long after the credits roll.

this blog isn’t about being a professional critic or breaking down films in a super technical way. it’s about how movies feel. the kind that leave you staring at the ceiling at 2am, the ones that feel soft and fragile, or unsettling in a way you can’t quite explain. i’m interested in atmosphere, character, color palettes, silence, symbolism, and those tiny moments that say more than a whole page of dialogue.

i’ll be writing about:

films i love (and films i don’t)

older films, newer films, and sometimes ones that feel forgotten

why a movie works emotionally, or why it doesn’t
