Due to the fact that she's seen nothing but pain come from the allusion of love, Penny decides that suppressing her feelings and pretending that they're not there is the better option than letting them be known. It's better to not get hopes up for unrealistic ideas like love.
When she can sense herself becoming too attached to a person or an idea, she cuts herself off faster than you can say the word attached. She refuses to let herself get hurt again by assuming that people care.
Penny never really had many friends after her attitude changed. After her parents divorce, she saw how her mother's country club prissy friends acted towards her so she isolated herself from her own friends, figuring it was better to just be her own best friend and not fake friendships with catty bitches(which clearly meant everyone in her mind).
Self Para about New Assistant After Mr. McIntosh told penny that she was getting an assistant, which in itself was a surprise, she turned and walked away with conviction, slightly annoyed. Thankfully, she was off duty and she went back to her current living place, room 432, locking the door to the suite with all measures. She turned on her speaker and hit shuffle on her phone's music, landing on A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me". She could feel the heat behind her eyes that begged her to let herself break down right there and now.
Anyone normal would have been ecstatic at the idea of having an assistant, especially when they had a job that was so high-demand with phone calls and such. But penny was far from normal. She saw the whole Biff deciding that she should have an assistant as a personal blow, like she wasn't doing her job right. Even when he had denied such an accusation, she still believed that that was the case.
Finally, she let the tears that had been welling up in her eyes fall down her cheeks as she sat up against the wall in her hotel room, music blaring loudly, but not loudly enough to be noticed throughout the hotel. She had never felt good enough for anything throughout her life and her surroundings HADNT helped with that. But when she moved to Lima and started working at Hotel McIntosh in the specific field she had spent five years studying, she finally felt like she was perhaps good enough to care for the hotel, and occasionally now, the bar's medical needs. She had thought she was juggling things quite well, and maintaining a low stress level, but it was clear to her that that feeling was not mutual.

Penny grew up in Columbus, Ohio with two homes four parents and two siblings.
Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old, leaving her and her two siblings(an older brother and a younger sister) to be on the move constantly between homes and parents.
Penny assumed the role of responsibility for her siblings, acting like a little mother to them while at home.
Outside of her homes and family, Penny found an outlet from the pressures through alcohol and flirting with everything that moved.
Penny lost her virginity her junior year of high school with her history teacher.
Penny watched from ages 5-10 her father emotionally abuse her mother, showing no respect for her what so ever and even at such a young age, Penny knew that she would not let any one talk down to her.
Despite being in “relationships” and having lost her virginity, Penny has never loved any of them. They were purely convenient individuals that she had a mutual friendliness towards.
Since her parents have gotten remarried to others, Penny has noticed that neither seems actually happy with their lives. Not that they were very happy-go-lucky before, but at least they were miserable together.
Even though Penny is a very flirtatious person, she is strictly business in her office, purely focused on the well-being of her patients and even dressing the part in medical scrubs. Once she leaves her office however, she is 100% back to her sexual self. But no mixing business with pleasure.
“Who is Jackie?” Brandon asked as he paused in the aisle. “That might give me a better idea of what to suggest.” His fingers ran along the fabrics of the costumes, blue eyes roaming over the shiny packaging. “I’m preferring to find a costume that I’ll put together from the thrift store or somewhere similar. But there’ll be no good fairy here…”
“Oh.” The brunette eyed the man coming down the aisle before clearing her throat. “She’s my... The girl I adopted. I’m her guardian. She’s gonna be two in January.” Penny blurted out as her brow furrowed in confusion for why she kept bringing up random facts about Jackie whenever people asked. “A thrift store... And what sort of costumes have you been able to come up with from there?” Besides looking like a hobo because second hand clothing, really? Gross. “Yeah, more like disgusting glitter bomb.. Besides the fact that I’d be afraid some of those stupid sparkles would fall off and she’d decide she wants to sparkle on the inside too and my one night off will leave me rushing into the E.R.”
“How about letting her be a cheerleader?” Jaclyn said looking over at her. “I didn’t mean to listen in on you.”
Hearing the voice, Penny glanced over at Jaclyn before shaking her head. “Nah, it’s fine. No worries.” Her face scrunched up slightly at the idea. “As... tiny as that outfit would be... I haven’t exactly had good experiences with cheerleaders... I don’t know if I’d be very eager for that costume...”
“I mean, maybe it was how shiny they were, but I tell you, Tommy loved them. Shame really, because so did I and I couldn’t wear them any time I was going to be around him!” Sienna replied, her smile broad and happy as it always was at the thought of her beloved baby brother back home in California. The woman tossed her long blonde hair back over her shoulders and looked down towards the infant in the shopping cart, smiling at her with a look halfway between wistful and joyous.
But the odd relationship between the two piqued her interest, and Sienna raised her eyebrows as she met Penny’s eyes. “Oh, really? That’s so cool! Not everyone would take on a baby just like that. You must be super brave. Although…” She paused to wink at the other woman. “I bet she’s worth it most of the time, right? You’ve got that look about you - the whole determined, powerful Mom thing. So are you raising her on your own, or got a partner or whatever…?” she asked, tilting her head slightly to one side.
“Right, yeah. That does sound like a bummer. Kids and their grabby hands, honestly.” Penny really did try her best to sound sincere, but was sure that there was a twinge of sarcasm that snuck it’s way into her words subconsciously. It seemed like, since she had lived her life with constantly criticizing people with sarcasm, it was a bit difficult to rid herself of that judgmental mindset.
Nodding slightly as she glanced down at Jackie who tugged on her sleeve and held up the bunny. She took the bunny from the little one’s hand and hid it behind her back for a moment before revealing it back to the child who giggled. The laughter of the little girl she’d taken in as her own made her smile before clearing her throat. “Yeah... well, I mean, I couldn’t let her get raised by someone that might have a horrid fashion sense...” She shrugged before looking back at Sienna. “Well, yeah... Wait, what? I’ve got a look about me?” The brunette didn’t think she looked a certain way... except maybe tired. “On my own, for the most part. I mean, I don’t have someone else regularly in her life... Well, I mean, semi-regularly, I do... but I wouldn’t say he...” Penny cleared her throat. “On my own.”
“So… it’s nearly Halloween. Which means it’s nearly Thanksgiving. And then what comes next?
Just hear those sleigh bells jinglin’, ring ting tinglin’ too…”
“If we could just skip to Christmas. that’d be great. I mean, it’s bound to snow here soon anyways, right? It’s friggin’ Alaska.”
“As much as I would like to avoid this stupid holiday, I feel like I need to dress Jackie up... but what the hell kind of costume do I get for her?” Penny muttered to herself as she passed an aisle with costumes. She shuttered slightly at one that was generically named “Good Fairy.” “Now that’s just gross.”
“Smoothly done,” Freddie replied, shoving his own keys back into his pocket as quietly as he could - he didn’t want to draw the baby’s attention back to them when she had her own, far more appropriate toy to play with. He kept a wide smile on his face. It was a rare occurrence when he didn’t smile around children - Freddie had always loved playing with the younger kids in his neighbourhood and that enjoyment still lingered. His eyebrows raised and he looked up from the infant when Penny mentioned babysitting.
“Oh, you were, uh, looking for a sitter? I mean, if I’d known…” he trailed off, a little self-conscious that he might be pushing himself forward. “You know, I love kids. I have a lot of evenings free, too, after work and everything. You can, uh, always give me a call if your new sitter’s busy some night. I’d love to take care of this little one. If you need the help, of course.”
Penny shrugged slightly as she watched Jackie shake the keys around. “Have to be with Little Miss Grabby Hands over here.” She let out a soft sigh before turning a bit to grab another bag of instant coffee to add to her collection of four already in the cart. A diet of coffee and bagels for breakfast was beyond unhealthy, but that was what the brunette had time for since becoming a full time nurse and guardian to the tot.
“Wait, seriously?” The nurse turned back towards Freddie rather quickly. “Because... and I don’t say this lightly... I honestly would trust you more than the weird tween I have taking care of her now.” Running a hand through her hair, she furrowed her brow. “I mean, at the very least, you actually have a sibling. This kid is an only child.. and seems totally overwhelmed at the sight of Jackie...”
Jaclyn shook her head and rubbed her temple more getting even more frustrated than before. “You don’t get to just came back home, to our home not yours and act as if you’ve been here this whole time. I don’t want to talk about this anymore goodbye.” She said shoving the phone into in her pocket. As if she couldn’t have made a bigger fool of herself, she did by running into someone.
“I’m so sorry.”
Walking back from the hospital to get some coffee at the cafe, Penny’s mind was everywhere but there. She, herself, had gotten a phone call that morning from the adoption agency. They needed her to sign more forms because their files had two different names on them. Ones prior to her finding out about her own adoption bearing Penny Owens, the ones immediately after bearing Penelope Crawford. It wasn’t that she had a problem with signing more forms to solidify her guardianship over Jackie, but she still didn’t know who she was.
Next thing she knew, she was hearing pieces of a conversation that sounded heated and then bumping into someone, shaking her out of her train of thought. “Oh, no. No. You’re fine. Are you... alright?” She inquired at the younger girl.
Sienna giggled in response, looking at the small girl affectionately. “Oh, don’t worry about it, honey! I have a baby brother, I spent pretty much all of my time between 18 and 21 with my hair in a ponytail. He just loved to grab my hair. And don’t get me started on hoop earrings!” She replied brightly. Lifting her head smoothly out of the way of the tiny fingers, Sienna deftly tucked her hair behind her ears and held the bunny toy out to the child instead.
“There you go. Much more interesting than hair, huh?” She said, then turned her attention back to the woman. “She’s gorgeous. Is she your daughter? Or baby sibling, like mine back home?”
Penny nodded slowly, smiling slightly as her eyes widened. How was one person so bubbly in a place like Alaska? Even Marley wasn’t this animated and that was truly saying something in Penny’s mind. And Marley was animated in Ohio of all places. “I can’t even imagine... Hoop earrings would be deadly, yeah..” Though why anyone would be wearing hoop earrings in the first place was not a topic that the brunette was going to approach right now.
Jackie grabbed the bunny and smiled big, hugging it to death. At least someone liked the toy her little sister had made all those years ago. Penny personally thought it was fairly shitty, but Jackie couldn’t seem to get enough of it. “Oh, uh, yeah. Thanks. Well, actually, neither. I adopted her after her mother abandoned her in my office..” The nurse had still not become accustomed to calling Jackie her daughter, even though that was exactly what she was now.
He kept a grip on the keys even as the baby girl tugged at them, making them jangle noisily but seemingly delighting her in any case. “I’m good. Settled in now. How are you?” Freddie replied politely. “And yeah, my Mom loves kiwis so I always had them as a kid. I like to, uh, get them now because it reminds me of home a little,” he explained, letting out an awkward laugh at his lacklustre reasoning. “Why are you lacking in it? Just, uh, tired with running around after this little one?” Freddie asked, smiling down at Jackie and chucking her under the chin gently with an outstretched finger.
As Penny moved the kiwis to the other end of the cart, Jackie continued to pull on the keys, sounding rather exasperated. “Mine!” The little one yelled at the keys in Freddie’s hand. “Oh that’s- Wait, what?” The brunette’s eyes shot down at the child and removed the keys from her hands. “No, Jackie. Those are not yours. These ridiculously large keys are yours.” She pulled the colorful children’s toy out of her bag and handed them to the girl who whimpered, but took them anyways. “Sorry.” The nurse sighed. “I, uh, have my hands full. Not a lot of down time to eat fruit, oddly enough.” Glancing down the aisle, she put another package of coffee into the cart. “I only just found a babysitter for her so I can work full shifts at the hospital and not just part time.”
“Oh, nothing important,” Sienna replied, flashing a bright smile at the brunette. She held out a small stuffed animal towards the woman, the fabric only a little grubby. “I just thought the kiddo there might have dropped this? It was in the produce aisle back there-” Sienna gestured vaguely over her shoulder, “- and I couldn’t see any other babies in the place. Is it yours, little one? It’s super cute!” she ended, aiming her last words downwards and towards the child, her voice turning only a little babyish.
Eyes darted to the stuffed animal, she glanced back at the child. “Seriously, Jackie? You have a perfectly soft bunny you can drool all over, yet you’d rather attempt to eat those dirty kiwis...” She shook her head slightly before turning her attention back to the blonde. “Yes, I’m sorry. That is hers. I didn’t mean to incon-” And then the brunette realized the center of attention was back on Jackie, who wiggled in the cart’s seat and blew a raspberry. Brief seconds later, Penny noticed the tiny hand of her adoptive daughter launch towards the other’ hair and stopped it. “No, Jackie... You’re not supposed to grab hair.. I’m sorry about all this.”
