i'm actually so sick and tired of seeing 'anastasia is imperialist propaganda' on here. it's such a tired take and such a bad faith reading. because it's really not.
(i'd even argue it's critical of the tsar; they blatantly state outright he's responsible for the death of dmitry's father and therefore responsible for dmitry's poverty, and when other characters complain about the imperialist era nobody argues with them. nobody is mourning the Empire™, they're mourning the family. but that's a different post)
i think people get confused because the tsar is depicted in such a rosy light, sure, but you forget this is from the perspective of a seven year old girl. we are witnessing her memories. what child is aware of the political choices her father is making when he's not home? and nicholas was famously a family man, so of course his children would remember him fondly.
but by choosing to not read a little deeper into the text as it's intended, you're missing out on a really beautiful immigrant story. a story about a girl trying to find her way back home. a story about where to go when your homeland literally tries to kill you. a story about a girl who, yes, was raised by a bloody ruler, and how interesting and fucked up that is to survive and grow up on the other side of the silver spoon and have to live with your father's blood in you for the rest of your life! that's compelling storytelling!!!
and let's not pretend the soviets were good and innocent too 💀
