My portrayal of Sam has the same powers as his comic counterpart. This also means that Redwing is an actual falcon here! I came up with a few headcanons to tie this into MCU timelines. Riley was Sam’s best friend, right? His codename when they went on missions together was Redwing. After Riley was killed when hit by an RPG, Sam couldn’t find a reason to keep serving. He wouldn’t return for a third touring left the Air Force. He focuses on helping other veterans suffering from PTSD back home and this is when he discovered that his avian telepathy ability. He buys a pet falcon shortly after and would name him after Riley . . . which is how the bird gets the name Redwing. His falcon is with him and living in his apartment with him! I’m also diverging a little from canon to say that Sam was born with these abilities instead of having Red Skull involved like in the comics because that doesn’t fit with MCU lore. Sam always had a fascination with birds as a kid so nobody thought anything of it at the time. . . not aware that Sam actually actually has a telepathic link to his favorite animals. How are you feeling? Physically and mentally.

“Physically? I’m fine. I’ve seen too much shit though . . . lost too much in such a short amount of time. I can’t just let that go but I’ve found a way to live with these feelings. It’s what drives me to help others going through the same thing. So . . . mentally? You could say that I’m managing.”

Where are you living? The same place you lived in 2012, or displaced to a random apartment? Explain to the best of your ability.

“I’m lucky enough to have woken up in my own apartment. It’s decorated a little differently than I remember but this is the past after all. I have to keep that in mind. Fortunately, there was a familiar face waiting for me to wake up, but Redwing was more concerned about getting breakfast than letting me sleep in some more. I guess some things haven’t changed no matter what year we’re in.”

What do YOU think we should do about the situation at hand? Try to go back home? The original mission of stopping Thanos? Rewrite the entire story?

“All of our efforts should be focused on stopping Thanos. I don’t know why anyone would think differently after everything we’ve experienced.”

What will you DO about the situation at hand?

“Whatever it takes to make things right. Everyone has to stand together when the time comes.”

Is there anything that you think needs to be done?

“During this part of my life I was running a support group for veterans. I’ll be working on keeping that going but otherwise . . . what could be more important than trying to stop Thanos?”

If need be, would you be willing to team up with the government and SHEILD to recoup and help the situation at hand?

“No.”

What are your worries?

“How different will our lives be when we return home? I don’t know shit about the timeline but I wonder what us being here will do. Maybe nothing will change but the thought crossed my mind anyway. My other worry is getting our asses handed to us.”

What do you think are the pros about this situation?

“There’s an advantage to already knowing what happens for years to come. Hopefully it can help us with our situation. Why wouldn’t we use it? This is our second shot.”

This is something promised for a while now but recent events  definitely threw a wrench into the flow of things. Sam has undergone some changes which are quite obvious when he swoops down onto the rooftop. It’s all very new and exciting. The weight of the shield on his back is still something he’s getting used to but it’s a very good feeling. “You ready to go on patrol together? I’ve been looking forward to this.”

Wearing the stars and stripes won’t be accepted well by everyone in this country but Sam knew that when agreeing to take over the mantle. He’s prepared for anything that comes his way while representing this iconic symbol. The shield is currently attached to the back of his new suit. It’s vibrant and everything he wanted it to look like. This isn’t Sam’s first time wearing it out in public but news will travel fast. Someone is approaching him so he turns to look at them with a smile. “You heard right. I’m Captain America now.”

( @peregrinc​​​ / sam ) “You know, there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.” Steve’s hand is on the shield, the symbol he’s carried on his back since the War. It had once been most of his identity, the thing most people knew him for without ever having to say a word to them. It had been part of who Steve was and had been for so long. The title of Captain America felt more like who he is than Steve Rogers did on most days; he’d spent more time as Cap than he ever had as just plain old Steve.  “What do ya think of dropping the Falcon name and giving Captain America a try?” Fingers drum against the shield, pushing it slightly towards Sam. “You also gotta put up with Bucky because he’s always been Cap’s right hand man, but there isn’t anybody better I can think to take over.”

This feels serious so Sam is taking off his reading glasses and setting them down on the coffee table. He stands up from the couch . . . completely abandoning the newspaper in his hands. He folds it up and tosses it down where he had been sitting. Steve has his undivided attention. “You can always talk to me about anything. You know that, so what’s on your mind?” There’s some worry but then his eyes look at the shield in Steve’s hands. He didn’t know what to expect but that question isn’t anywhere close to what came to mind. His hands are suddenly reaching out to slowly take the shield, one of the most important symbols to this country. He begins to gently running his fingers along the vibranium, realizing the wight that will be carried with taking over the mantle. Sam never thought Steve would ever retire but it means a lot to him that he’s trusting him with his legacy. “Steve . . .  you’re sure?” Redwing is watching intensely from across the room. Eyes finally looking up from staring at the shield in his hands to meet Steve’s. “If you believe in me then I’ll do my best to make you proud while wearing the stars and stripes.” His heart is racing . . . knowing how much different his life is going to be after today. “It’s an honor to be the new Captain America.” His lips quirk into a smirk. “I can live with those terms.” He holds the shield on his arm now, posing with it for a moment since this will be something he has to get used to doing. “What do you think, Steve?” He already feels like Cap and wonders what brought on all of this but if anyone deserves a break? It’s his best friend. He’s been through so much and he wants nothing more than for him getting a chance to relax. He’ll happily take over the Captain America mantle to make sure that can happen.

Redwing is too damn smart for his own good. He’s discovered a very easy to way to get whatever he wants from Bucky, and what he wants most of the time is Bucky’s dinner. He’s figured out that nipping the metal hand won’t get a reaction out of Bucky like it will if he nips the flesh fingers. The more he bites Bucky’s fingers the quicker he’s able to get Bucky to give in and let him eat from his plate. Tonight is no different, Bucky’s alone for the evening, settled on the couch with a record spinning the background. At first Redwing seemed rather uninterested in the food Bucky was eating, but the more Bucky ate the more he grew interested. Eventually this resulted like it always did when Bucky eats alone, Redwing bites his fingers until he can eat from his plate.

However this evening seems to be different because as Redwing pulls a particularly long noodle off of Bucky’s plate – there’s Sam.  Bucky opens his mouth once… then twice trying to figure out how to explain why Redwing has tomato sauce all over his chest. Eventually he settles with: “He kept biting me so I let him have some.” 

Running errands has never been Sam’s favorite activity to do but sometimes it needed to be done. He needed to grab a few groceries for one of the veterans that attends his meetings and picked up some things of his own too. He doesn’t mind stopping by and helping out those around the community. It’s what his father would have done. Making sure that you’re there for your neighbor. He doesn’t ever expect anything in return. This took a few hours since naturally some work needed to be done around the apartment when arriving to drop off the food. He did it all with a smile before heading home with his own bags. He tried balancing the two paper bags in his arms while kicking the door shut behind him gently. However the sight upon making his way to the kitchen makes him stop in his tracks. Redwing is there covered in tomato sauce with a noodle in his mouth. “I don’t even know where to start with my questions.” He blinks for a minute before setting his purchases down on the counter. He leans in the doorway, just observing his boyfriend for a minute.

This should be a good story.

“You know he does that because it irritates you until you give in, right?” There’s amusement laced with his words and looks over at the bird who finishes eating the piece of pasta before flying over to greet his owner. “Alright, don’t get your sauce on me. You are going to need a bath.”  The responds that he receives doesn’t really have anything to do with his hygiene. <“I like biting him to get things. It amuses me. Keep him around.”> Which only makes Sam laugh as the bird leaves to start cleaning himself elsewhere in the apartment. He’s just happy that they’re getting alone. “Well the good news, babe, is that means Redwing likes you.”

victors  unsure  if  the  events  happening  in  this  universe  will  affect  his  own  considering  the  two  don’t  exist  together,  it’s  something  he’ll  have  to  do  more  research  in  when  he  finds  the  leagues  base.  always  seemed  to  work  better  when  he  was  in  familiar  places,  and  though  it  wouldn’t  be  the  hall  of  justice,  just  being  with  his  teammates  makes  him  feel  better.  “  hey  man,  birds  are  pretty  fuckin’  neat,  i  know  plenty  of  people  who  use  ‘em  for  their  aliases.  a  whole  team  named  after  ‘em  actually.  ”  it’s  true,  he  could  count  at  least  ten  people  who  had  something  with  a  bird  in  their  name,  which  he  still  thinks  is  cool.  smiles  at  the  other  for  a  moment  as  he  nods.  it  was  always  a  fun  time  with  garfield,  especially  when  he  was  given  the  chance  to  show  off.  “  i  think  he’d  love  that,  he’s  the  flashy  type,  real  entertaining.  ” 

“  agreed,  working  against  each  other  will  only  put  us  back  rather  than  forward.  i’m  sure  my  team  would  be  more  than  willing  to  meet  with  yours.  ”  he  can’t  promise  they’ll  be  civil  though,  they  work  as  a  team  but  some  members  still  don’t  work  well  with  others.  “  having  the  chance  to  start  over  is  something  i  don’t  think  people  will  be  willing  to  pass  but,  hopefully  we  can  talk  ‘em  out  of  it  when  the  times  comes.  ”  offers  the  man  a  shrug  at  his  apology,  dismissing  it  with  a  lopsided  grin.  “  would  we  be  heroes  if  we  weren’t  fighting  a  maniacal  tyrant?  he’s  in  a  whole  other  universe  so  i  ‘ain’t  even  worried  about  him.  as  far  as  those  robots…  i  think  it’s  best  we  keep  all  options  on  the  table  until  we  can  eliminate  any,  together.  ”  systems  have  tried  to  scan  the  robot  like  creature  dozens  of  times  and  it  still  pops  up  with  an  error  message  every  time.  he  knows  they’re  not  just  pieces  of  art  and  it  irritates  him  he  can’t  figure  it  out.  “  names  cyborg  by  the  way,  just  realized  i  didn’t  introduce  myself.  ”

Surely the multiverse will have to become a worry. Everyone’s coming from different points in time and Sam wonders how their absence will impact their own universes. They must keep it in consideration. How unfair it will be to expect these people to help save his home and then have their own spiraling into disaster due to some miscalculations. Sam might just be too compassionate but that’s one of his strengths. The way he cares about everyone and puts them before himself — learning from his father at an early age that kindness goes a long way. He also knows that it can lead to tragedy too but the lesson ultimately is that you should always try. “I’m glad you think so. They’re a good ally to have out there. Nobody ever suspects pigeons to pull them off the street while they’re trying to run away. It gets ‘em every time.”  His lips quirk up into an amused smile for a moment. “Whole team named after birds? Sounds like my kind of people.” He knows that this isn’t the time or place for making jokes but doesn’t want to ruin the chance at making an ally. It’s important not to lose yourself in a time of stress. These were the moments that they need to come together the most.

“I know it won’t be easy to bring our teams together but with the hard work I believe that we can do it.” Sam envisions some trouble purely based off of all the different personalities being meshed together alone. It’s worth it to try. They can’t all do this alone. “Once we all start getting to know each other then I think we’ll do great things together.” Maybe Sam is just being hopeful but someone has to be. Besides he’s already getting along with the other man quite well and wants to get an opportunity for them to work together again. “You have a point there. We take one down and another comes along to take their place. Lets just hope he stays in your universe. The last thing we need is him showing up and trying to befriend Thanos. Now there’s a terrifying thought, man.” Sam shakes his head in disbelief wondering what they’d do with two of them to worry about. Maybe it’s not something to concern himself with just yet but doesn’t rule it out as a possibility either. New people displaced from their timelines show up all the time. Redwing seems content to stay there on Sam’s shoulder but looks around to keep an eye on their surroundings. “It’s nice to meet you Cyborg. I’m Falcon but you can call me Sam.”

sharon frowned as he explained everything. some of that she already knew, but some of it was new to her. none of this was good. she didn’t need experience with shield or heroes to know this was nearly as bad as things could get. “when did you get so damn diplomatic?” she asked, raising an eyebrow at him, a slight smile on her face. “as much as i hate it, i have pull at shield again, which can help us. i also have pull at the cia. i’ll do what i can to help here, but if you need information, let me know. i can get it for you,” she promised. she had other methods, too. “now, you said people from the past? how the hell does that work?”

“I learned along the way how to take my experience with helping people to do some good. You don’t need to fight everyone to make a difference. Some might say that I’ve been spending too much time around Steve but truthfully, I think I’ve always been diplomatic.” Sam grins at Sharon for a moment. It can’t be easy to be thrown back into their old lives, especially when so much has changed over the years. It was easy for him to slide into his old shoes but that can’t be said for everyone else. “I can’t imagine what being back at shield is like considering what we know about them now.” How many Hydra agents are within the organization during this point in history. “I appreciate you doing that for me. If there’s anything you ever need from me then say the word. I’ll be your eyes in the sky.” He nods, promising to help her in return too. “Yes. There’s an old war hero who died back in the forties that grew up with Steve and Bucky. He’s here now walking among us. I know this because he was in my kitchen the other day. People are coming from all different points in time to help this fight. It’s interesting . . .  but sending everyone back home at the end of this won’t be so easy.” They’re working with so many more different timelines now than they did the first time around.

Sam smiles at that but truthfully believes you can make a difference in all sorts of different ways. Sometimes it’s simply by showing up to volunteer in the city, giving meals to those that are in need. Other times it’s doing something for another just to be a good neighbor. Nothing is quite like the night job though, he can agree with that too. “You haven’t been out much recently? We can change that . . . I’ll bring you along with me sometime this week.”

Natasha almost feels bad as the bag of birdseed falls to the ground, but then she remembers that there’s a real-life falcon that also lives in the apartment with them. “The old lady across the hall is far too helpful for anybody’s own good.” She raises and eyebrow in amusement at the thought of James attacking a mailman for something so simple, but she gets it. In the first days after Clint had saved her from the Red Room, she’d constantly had a knife in her hand ready to defend herself against anyone and everyone she met. “I’ll attempt another break-in in a couple of weeks. For security purposes of course.” She shakes her head at his question of beverages; she hadn’t planed on staying long, just here to check the security of the building. “You mean the suddenly being back in the past part? Or the suddenly not being dead part? Because both are pretty awful.”

The birdseed rests on the floor for a moment before bending down to pick it up. He moves across the room and leaving it by the rest of his supplies for Redwing. Which includes the gear that he wears when they go on patrol — allowing him to emit a super-sonic screech. The criminals really hate it when that sound fills the room. “What do you have against old ladies? She’s the only other person in this building that Bucky seems to trust so I think we should leave her alone.” He says this with a playful tone to his voice, he takes a seat at the kitchen table after grabbing a beer from the fridge for himself. He opens the bottle and takes a sip while listening to his friend talk. “I’m not too fond of being back in the past but I don’t think you being alive should ever be considered awful. Your feelings on the situation are the most important here though, so . . .  if you want to talk about it then you can always come talk to me. I’m good at listening.”  His hand places the beverage down on the table, giving Natasha his full attention. He likes to help out his friends but that much is obvious ever since they met.

it’s  an  unsettling  idea  to  know  that  further  consequences  could  be  made  if  they  stayed  in  the  past  any  longer.  time  was  tricky  and  it  was  almost  impossible  to  figure  out,  it’s  one  of  the  main  reasons  victor  did  his  best  to  avoid  messing  with  the  multiverse.  but,  sometimes,  it’s  unfortunately  inevitable.  “  that’s  sick,  dude.  ”  victor  comments,  fascinated  with  the  idea  of  communicating  with  animals.  it  reminds  him  of  a  close  friend,  and  though  he  doesn’t  show  it,  he’s  worried  down  under  about  them.  “  my  best  friend  has  a  similar  thing,  though  he  shape  shifts  into  ‘em  so,  maybe  not  as  similar.  either  way,  it’s  a  cool  set  up  and  you  got  a  cool  bird.  ” 

 he  listens  in  silence  for  a  moment,  nodding  in  agreement  as  he  holds  back  a  heavy  sigh.  “  not  only  are  we  dealing  with  the  concept  of  trying  to  get  all  of  you  back  to  your  respective  time  period,  we  now  have  to  figure  out  how  the  events  pulled  us  here.  ”  us  meaning  his  world.  the  cyborg  still  doesn’t  understand  it  fully,  and  it’s  a  looming  thought  over  his  head  of  the  possibility  of  never  going  home.  “  and  if  we  can  get  everyone  back.  ”  he  returns  the smile,  arms  reaching  to  cross  over  his  chest.  “  this  ain’t  the  first  giant  purple  people  eater  i’ve  dealt  with  unfortunately.  i  think  you’re  onto  something  though,  it’s  nothing  but  coincidental  that  it  happened  to  partially  destroy  the  avengers  tower  on  the  night  when  a  bunch  of  heroes  were  gathering  there.  think  it  has  anything  to  do  with  those  robot  things  people  saw  all  over  town?  ” 

It makes sense that the longer anyone of them stay in the past then more consequences will arise. Sam wonders how different everything will be once they all return to their respective points in time. Such small changes can prove to alter their future. Which doesn’t have to be an awful thing but it’s hard to say what things will be like to make that judgment call. Sam wishes for his friends to all find some peace at the end of all this. He can’t get too lost in his thoughts right now, needing to focus on the moment at hand. “Thank you. I’ve always been passionate about birds and then my powers manifested when I was a kid . . . so here we are, using what I’ve been given for good.” He couldn’t imagine such an ability ending up in the wrong hands. Controlling bids and being able to communicate with them might sound silly at first to some people but do you really want hundreds of birds attacking you all at once? “Shape shifts into animals? Now that’s really cool. Maybe when everything calms down you can introduce me to him.”

There’s more questions than answers at this point but forming new alliances can be beneficial. “Which is why I think bringing together our different teams is a wise decision since we don’t know what could happen next.” They have a rough idea for those like himself that have lived this before but things have already changed from the original events that occurred. “We also have to plan for the fact there’s going to be people that won’t want to go back to their respective time periods. Although . . . .that’s something we can deal with when the time comes.” They need to focus on Thanos right now and the earthquake clean up throughout the city. “I’m sorry you had a similar tyrant where you come from.” He sighs, giving a few seconds of silence. “I don’t think we some rule it out. What if someone else is behind it and plans on using the robots to cover their tracks? They could make it look like they have something to do with the destruction. There’s so many ways this could play out and I don’t like not knowing.”

while he would never actually do that, especially with this also being the avengers’ home, it was true that he technically could. “exactly. he’d probably break in, though,” he noted. clint did seem to enjoy bothering tony, but then again, who didn’t he bother? he laughed at the idea and shook his head. “honestly, i’d be impressed he wasted that much of his little money on stupid suits.” 

Sam is just joking around anyway, trying to have a good time tonight. It’s what the night is for, right? They’re meant to be mingling with the crowd of heroes from another world. He introduced himself to a few people that he didn’t recognize before coming over to talk with Tony for a little bit. “You’re probably right about that so might as well let him stay with his weird suit.”

          ‘  i  would  love  to  stop  bad  guys  together  with  you  some  time  .  ’    and  she  digs  around  her  pockets  ,   searching  for  a  little  metal  box  before  pulling  out  her  phone  and  handing  it  to  him !    ‘  lets  trade  numbers  ,   keep  in  touch ?  ’  

Trading numbers is an excellent idea and Sam just has a good feeling about the two of them fighting alongside each other on patrol. He hands over his own phone after opening up the new contact screen. “I’m glad you’re interested. I’ll give you my number and we can start making some plans since we’ll be keeping in touch.”

some of her irritation disappeared as sam spoke. he obviously didn’t have anything to do with this and was as confused as she was. “nice to see you, too, sam,” she said, letting out a sigh. “yeah, that’s what i’m saying. you’d already come back. everyone had. it was almost as big of a mess as the initial snap,” she explained. “i’d like to know that, too. maybe we aren’t technically from the same universe.”

“Here’s what I do know. People are being brought from all different points in the time. Some got pulled forward in time from the past instead of being brought back in time like you and me. There’s also a few people from alternate universes. Nobody knows why but there are things happening that didn’t happen the first time we lived through this.” It gives him a headache trying to make sense of it but he’s trying. “My point is I don’t think any of us are from the same exact place in the timeline but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I don’t know what you’ve been through, Sharon, but what do you say we work together on finding some answers?” They might both be confused but maybe two people working together on making sense of the situation will do some good.

           ‘  silk  is  so  much  more  …  modern ?  does  that  make  sense ?  it’s  just  so  much  more  chic  .  ’    but  to  be  fair  ,   peter  wasn’t  exactly  known  for  being  the  most  …  creative  of  people  .    ‘  exactly !  you  get  it !  ’   and  she  beams  at  him  ,   petite  body  perking  up  as  she  does  so  .    ‘  cool  in  an  avenger’s  eyes ?  ’    super  cool  .  

“I totally get it. I think it’s always a great idea to make things your own.” Sam likes to see how creative people can get with their secret identities.  Whether they were establishing something of their own or becoming part of a legacy. He thinks creativity shines in a multitude of different ways. Which isn’t always easy when there’s an entire city filled to the brim with superheroes. Especially lately with everyone coming back in time. “Exactly! Maybe we can stop some bad guys together sometime.” There’s enough crime going on in New York to go around, that’s for sure.
