The current paradox: AI is mostly just useful for what could basically be called “pure science” research (be that data analysis to automated theorem proving), whereas it is not very useful in automating other parts of the economy. On the other hand, we are now living in an era where funding for basic science research in the US is under threat while the American economy is also increasingly made up in large part by AI-related ventures.

I think Aragorn agrees with you; doesn’t his tentative plan after Gandalf’s death include Gimli being the only other person who accompanies him, Frodo and Sam to Mordor? I’d think the question of who could best withstand the ring’s power—and, if need be, carry it to its end—was what he primarily had in mind (though you could argue he was just thinking of Gimli’s dwarven endurance being a good fit for the harsh conditions). And in the logic of LotR, if Aragorn (or Gandalf or any of the other wise) believes something to be true, that’s substantial evidence that it just is canonically true.
