With frequent heavy rainstorms in recent weeks and severe water accumulation on many roads, many commuters are facing a serious question: What should I do if my electric bicycle gets submerged in water?

Although most electric bicycles have basic waterproof designs to handle normal splashing, they are not designed for prolonged water immersion. Once submerged, the risks increase significantly.

Major Safety Risks of Water-Soaked Electric Bicycles

Motor Damage and Performance Degradation Water can seep into the motor, corroding coils and bearings. This leads to poor operation, accelerated aging, strange noises, and eventual motor failure.

Battery Short Circuit, Fire & Explosion Risk The most dangerous issue. Rainwater entering the battery pack can cause internal short circuits, rapid aging of the BMS (Battery Management System), and in worst cases, thermal runaway leading to fire or explosion.

Controller and Electrical System Failure Water damage to the controller and wiring can result in unpredictable power delivery, sudden power loss, or complete system failure.

What to Do If Your Electric Bicycle Gets Soaked

Never do this:

Do not attempt to charge the battery immediately (extremely high risk of electric shock and fire).

Correct Steps:

Immediately remove the battery from the vehicle.

Wipe the exterior thoroughly with a dry cloth.

Place the battery and vehicle in a well-ventilated, dry area to air dry naturally (do not use heat sources like hair dryers).

Send the vehicle to a professional repair shop as soon as possible for full inspection, drainage, and testing. Do not attempt to disassemble or repair it yourself.

Critical Rules for Riding in Rainy Weather

Avoid deep water — Take a detour rather than forcing through flooded areas.

Park smart — Choose higher ground and dry locations during heavy rain.

Ventilate after rain — Remove any rain covers promptly once the weather clears to allow moisture to escape.
