ABOUT AMETHYST

Amethyst is a purple semi-precious stone that has been used in personal jewelry for over 2,000 years. It is commonly found in geodes or chambers of igneous rocks such as rhyolite.

The purple color of amethyst is due to irradiation and iron impurities in the silica structure. Most amethysts range in color from light purple to dark purple, but some specimens are deep reddish purple to brownish purple.

Amethyst can also be found in the metamorphic and sedimentary rocks of Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Madagascar and Russia. In the Brazilian states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul, crystals form in druse crusts that line the interior of large volcanic rocks, sometimes called geodes.

Amethyst has been produced in many places throughout the United States. Much of this was a by-product of other mining operations. Today, the only commercially operated amethyst mine in the United States is the Four Peaks mine in Arizona. The mine is famous for its production of reddish-purple amethyst. The deposit was also known to Native Americans because several amethyst arrowheads were found nearby. Some of the amethysts in the Spanish Crown Jewels may have originated from this deposit, which was brought to Spain by Spanish explorers.

The physical properties of amethyst are almost identical to those of other colored varieties of quartz. Amethyst, a type of coarse-grained, transparent quartz mineral, is valued as a semi-precious stone because of its purple color. It is considered the strongest and most protective stone.

Crystal types vary in shape and form, but the most popular forms of amethyst crystals are spikes, clusters, and crushed stones. These include Amethyst Geodes, Amethyst Plates, Amethyst Crystals, and Amethyst Gems.

Amethyst is associated with the earth element and the zodiac sign for both Aquarius and Pisces that were born in February.
