( emre bey / cis-male / he/him ) — was that PETER PARLAK  passing through diagon alley? yes, i think so… people around them say they remind them of a boy trying better to be than who he was, a love for your mother who you’d do anything for, late night dysfunction under the moonlight, memories of people you want to forgive and forget, trying to change your fate no matter the consequences,  which i suppose seems fitting for a GRYFFINDOR. they’re actually pretty QUIET, ALOOF, and ASSURED for a TWENTY-ONE year old, but i wonder if it serves them well when working as a WAITER for the GREASY SPOON (muggle diner). rumour has it that that HALFBLOOD is an ASSOCIATE of the ORDER OF THE PHOENIX? i wouldn’t have guessed… but this is a conversation we should be having somewhere else.

mary, in all honesty, had never felt so glad to see a week ending. of course, it hadn’t been all bad - sirius was finally back home, and that was something to celebrate, but it hadn’t lessened the amount of work mary would have to do before she was able to go home and before she had known it, she’d spent the next three nights staying late at the office, catching up on her other work. the sight of her flat, quiet and waiting for her to crash for the whole weekend, should have been comforting, but the longer mary had waited for pepper to appear, the more anxiety she felt, even though she knew exactly where pepper had managed to flee to. 

which is how, and more importantly why, she ended up here, feet aching and eyes tired, on peter’s doorstep. raising her knuckles to knock, she thought, not for the first time, that this was all a little ridiculous, and waited for her friend to open the door, her tone tired when she spoke. “hey, acushla. i think you have my escape artist?” 

the marauders all had weird working hours, and right now peter was the only one that was home at the moment. it shouldn’t surprise him as much as it did seeing mary’s pet finding it’s way to their flat but he always did a slight chuckle letting it fully in their place. he was expecting a knock anytime now, and when it came he had grabbed the pet and held it in his arms while smiling at mary. “lose something, yeah?” peach had greeted mary at the door, rubbing against her leg and then meowing for her to come in, he opened the door wider and passing off the little escape artist.

Lily quickly flipped her hair up into a messy bun as she started her rounds for the day, snatching up her clipboard and making her way down the hall towards the room holding her first patient. Normally, as a healer-in-training, she wouldn’t be seeing patients on her own, but the hospital was run a bit thin at the moment due to the violence and unrest that had been building up in the streets, and more and more wixen who’d ended up on the wrong side of a duel were flooding the waiting room. As such, she was given smaller, less severe assignments, with strict instructions to call for a more experienced healer if she encountered anything unexpected.

Knocking softly and waiting for the short “Come in,” from the other side of the door, Lily smiled softly as she entered the room and gave a soft, “Good morning,” careful to keep her voice low to avoid aggravating any potential head pain. “Can you tell me what’s brought you in today?”

it was a surprise to see lily here, he knew that she had worked here but it had still been a surprise nonetheless, while most of his friends took the wizarding job path peter had worked as a waiter but on this particular occasion it wasn’t his job that had caused an accident. 

“well, i was visiting remus at the menagerie and was looking at the fire crabs, and then i got burned,” he held up his hand, he had known not to touch it, but he had left his hand near it while turning around to say something to remus and then the accident had happened. “figured i come here just to be safe.” he looks at lily again with a smile. “plus i figured i’d come by and harass you lovingly.”

“Don’t make me laugh, Pete.  You’d miss me too much.” Sirius said teasingly, before nudging his friend lightly. After meeting with his cousins, he was glad of the far more light hearted nature of his friends, he knew they were probably just as concerned, but they didn’t wear the worry on their faces in the same way. He had opened his mouth to add another cheeky comment, but before he could, Peter had him wrapped in a hug.  “Ahh you totally missed me.”  He said through a slight chuckle. “Do you know that freaky feline furball tries to spoon me?  Can’t say i missed that.”

peter was sentimental, he loved his friends too much, and he wouldn’t be ashamed for it. he knew that the love was there and reciprocated they had just shown it in their own ways, merlin knows that his friends had gone through more than they should have all the while they were living in a war that no one knew what to do about, never mind the politics happening in the muggle world that peter still lived in and couldn’t ignore. “sure, mate, sure.” he squeezes him a little tighter, one extra one for all the weeks they had lost. “you don’t deserve his love,” peter says with a smile shaking his head. “i bet you missed your bed though. and maybe us. just maybe.”

“As if I’d’ve let ye,” Jamie mumbles, declining to light his own wand in spite of the darkness of the street. He feels a bit silly now Peter’s acknowledged him, like he’s been caught lying in wait for him like some sort of… desperate loser. It’s just a coincidence - the Greasy Spoon’s on his way home. “Saw Black got out.”

peter may never truly know jamie’s intentions most days, and maybe that was part of the mystery and fun, but it had been a long couple of weeks. he had visited his mother more often than he gone back home to the flat to a point where she was just about ready to move into his flat until further notice. it’s the caring, he thinks, it’s just too much of it that he felt he didn’t receive but he also gave it out to those that he loved, and maybe it was just too much. he puts his wand down now, they’re still in a muggle area and hides it. “yeah, uh, he did.” it’s hard not to smile at the thought, peter had been trying to keep his friends together while he himself felt like he was falling apart. “regulus is still missing,” not that he was ever close or even liked regulus but he knew that there was still a familial bond, just like the way that he searched for his dad still whenever he visited his friends at the ministry.

Georgie raised an eyebrow at Peter. She knew who he was, of course. He was a year younger but hung out with Sirius. Like most of them, she wasn’t their biggest fan. They were just…a lot. And Gryffindors. Liking Sirius was bad enough. “No idea,” she said with a shrug. “I only really go to Magical Creatures. Why are you trying to go to the aurors?” 

now it was his turn to raise an eyebrow, he had heard a bit of georgiana parkinson, they both had a connection to the black family, but he had never kept up with her, because why would he? but it did surprise him to hear that she worked with magical creatures, and peter never liked people making assumptions about him but he just couldn’t see it for himself. “what creatures?” he asks, now curious. “a couple of mates are aurors, just stopping by to be annoying.”

“Maybe you looked like a kicked puppy. I was fine,” James insists, his usual devil-may-care smile coming that bit easier now Sirius is back among them, where he belongs. Yes, he had been worried - and perhaps even a little hurt that his best friend hadn’t owled him to say he was leaving - but he’ll be damned if he ever admits it. “Are you saying I’m not enough of a pain in the arse on my own? Wormtail, you wound me.”

“well, as my anne says, it’s not a crime to care,” and something about there’s courage in being soft. his mother would know all about that, she was far too soft for her own good, and in turn given that to her son even if time and experience had roughed his edges. he does roll his eyes at the other, knowing perfectly well where james was coming from, and understanding that it was different now—james had lost a lot of people, it was easier to pretend that losing another part of your family wasn’t any different. “no, you definitely are.” he rolls his eyes again, a smile on his lips before sighing, “good, someone has to. you got too much of an ego there,” he intentionally messes up james hair before grabbing a cigarette from his pocket it and placing it in between his lips. “let’s head home, i’m fucking freezing out here,”

peter had brought the boys all the stuff that no one wanted in their pastry section of the restaurant, sure, it probably tasted a little stale but it was something for the celebration of sirius’ return and good thinking food for the plan when it came to the next full moon for remus. the home that had felt so cold and lonely since the absence of one of their arm was starting to feel a little bit warmer by the second. he sat on one of the beanbags in the tiny living room with a beer in hand and his cat close beside him. “happy to have you here padfoot, i guess,” of course he means it with every fibre in his being, but peter had never been one for kind affection. “but we have other fish to fry now,”

“mate, you are so lucky i didn’t let your room to just anyone,” peter says, though james probably wouldn’t ever let him, nor peter himself, ever let anyone have the room that rightfully belonged to sirius in their flat. “happy to have you back home, but you did give us a bit of a fright.” he wraps his arms around his best friend anyway regardless of what had happened, he was just happy that sirius was back with them regardless. “peaches missed you most, certainly not either of us.”

sirius had been acquitted of all charges which meant things at work had settled down for a boy who had spent many months and weeks trying to fill the hole of his best friend gone with work. when he starts to head home he feels another presence he looks, using his wand to illuminate the darkness and see another friendly face. “you’re lucky i didn’t blast your arse,” he says, walking closer to the light.

peter had come over to spend some time with remus, he had felt like he hadn’t seen the other in a while and just needed to be around someone while james was at work, being an ruro, peter was learning, was a lot of random hours, and he didn’t know how he did it all the while with everything that was happening with sirius and regulus. “i’m not even really reading it,” he says, “just watching the picture move.” he puts it down now before looking at the other. “gossip column isn’t even that scandalous.”

peter had been listening intently to arthur, nodding his head along while he stuck a fork into the pie that he had brought, two forks, and smiled, “it’s what makes you unique,” peter agrees, before taking a bite. “does the misunderstood like a piece of slightly burnt pie?” he supposed the good thing about working at a diner was the free desert that he got, granted, they were what they called oopsies, but the inside tasted just fine. “where’s all this coming from though? someone at work say something absolutely shite to you?”

Occasionally, the fact that Sirius had transformed into his animagus far too often during his teenage years, worked to his advantage because he was sometimes to procure the sense of smell that used to only be available to him when he changed.  He had been huddled under a bridge waiting for the day to pass, he just had to see his friends, he couldn’t take it any longer.  He hadn’t really considered which one he would visit first because he loved and missed them all in equal measure. Though, just when he was about to move from his hiding place, he could have sworn that he caught the faintest whiff of Pete mixed with tobacco.  Maybe it was his canine alter ego, or maybe it was all the time Sirius had spent with him over the years.  Either way, Sirius followed the scent, which only became stronger and stronger.  Sticking to the alleyways as he waited for the few people now between he and Peter to disperse into the night. 

He followed for another block or two, until he was absolutely sure that they were the only people on the street.  Finally, he cleared his throat and emerged from the shadows.  “Pete? It’s you right?” 

it was a rough couple of days, it felt much longer to him, if he was being honest with himself. he had felt entirely alone, he knew that he had only himself to blame, throwing himself into work as much as he could, staying late even though he didn’t need to. he just wanted a distraction, to keep his mind occupied while he tried getting more leads for himself because it was easier to do that then think that your best friend could very well be possibly dead. he’d like to think that he’d know if he was, but it was getting harder and harder to carry on hope when no one knew where he was and if they did they weren’t saying anything, not even to his best friends. he had loved sirius with everything in him, considered him a brother, one that he had always wanted but never got for himself until now. he tries and holds onto the good parts, remembering the good things, trying to keep the faith that maybe he was just hiding out somewhere, so far removed from all of this and the spectacle that his mother was putting on for the crowd. 

when he finds himself in the alley way he grabs his wand and when he hears footsteps he takes his wand out, quick to turn and hold it to the other’s throat, and when he realizes who it is, he almost drops his wand, his face falls completely and he’s so overwhelmed with emotion he doesn’t know what to do with himself, he gulps, throwing his arms around the other and holding him close. “fucking merlin, pads,” he whispers, afraid that if he speaks any louder he’d disappear again. “i thought you were-” he doesn’t finish the thought, he shakes his head, pulling him in tighter. “where have you been?”

There  it  went  again,  all  the  words  spilling  out  of  her  with  no  wares  for  where  she  was  or  whom  she  was  with.  Something  strange  and  sympathetic  spread  over  and  her  body  slumped  even  more  with  long  legs  lazily  gone  over  onto  the  floor  before  her.  “Come  share  some  cat.”  She  wriggled,  holding  Peter’s  cat  back  out  to  him.  That  inconsiderateness  on  display  for  her  entrance  created  a  sour  hole  in  her  throat  again  in  retrospect,  a  feeling  she  thought  she  would  be  leaving  behind  by  now.  “He  loves  you.”  She  knew  what  was  going  on  and  being  in  the  dark  about  this  was  maddening.  Well,  it  was  memory  of  that  feeling  that  made  it  worse  -  hearing  hushed  conversations  behind  closed  doors  not  meant  for  her  young  ears.  Seeing  the  odd  looks  of  the  adults  in  the  room.  It  was  no  different  now,  and  maybe  worse  when  all  she  could  think  is  about  what  she  could  potentially  do.  Because  now,  isn’t  that  what  they  were  meant  to  do?  Thought  before  action,  that’s  what  it  was  supposed  to  be  right?  Wistful  eyes,  but  determined  brow  looked  back  to  Peter  after  smoothening  out  the  cat’s  fur.  

“Maybe  I  should  try  cooking  or  something.”

peter had been so distracted lately, there was a layer of worry and anxiety that filled every part of him, so many things that he had wanted to say but was unable to say because he didn’t know how to say them. it showed in the state of their flat and fridge, being unable to do much but bare minimum with most things. he looks over at marlene, his head against the couch as he reached out to pet his cat who purred underneath his touch. a cat and rat, he thinks, getting along, the thought almost makes him smile but nothing really comes out of him, just a long sigh, a close of eyes trying to keep himself calm and present. “peaches is glad that there’s another person here giving him attention.” he finally says, working up the small smile.

“you’re more than welcome to try and cook though me and james haven’t bought much groceries in a while.” he shakes his head now, “we can just order in something, marls.” it was funny, all things considered, that peter worked at a diner but never brought home much food unless it was some dessert that was subpar.

​ it’s late, he’s walking home from the leaky cauldron, avoiding going home as usual even though he loves his best friends, it’s just hard to see them right now knowing that they’re missing one of their own. he grabs a cigarette from his pocket and lights it, looking up as the street light flickers, turning on one by one. it’s a deserted street, the occasional car whirls past him but other than that it’s quiet—too quiet for his liking—it’s out of instinct to turn around, to feel a sense of paranoia—he doesn’t think he’s being followed—why would anyone want to follow peter? but he’s been in his head for too long now without finding any answers on sirius or regulus. he tightens his hand on his backpack quickly turning right into an alleyway and turning around once more, but there’s no one there. at least not from what he can see.
