Steve Roger’s entire character arc has been built over him putting others before himself, always. He is and always will be, a self sacrificing dumbass. It is a personality trait he cannot get rid of. He was willing to burn in a building as long as his best friend, Bucky Barnes, could escape said building. This friend is the person Steve cares the most about in the world. Based on this information one could deduce that he would not save the world, and get back this friend, and then go run off to be with a girl whose niece he kissed not long after she passed away. In this essay I will-

Controversial Opinion™️: Steve’s entire character arc is based on him sacrificing himself before others, so when he’s given the chance to finally live a domestic lifestyle with somebody he loves and not have to constantly be fighting people to survive, he takes it and finally lives. This is something that even Tony had, for the short amount of time that he had it.

Tony got Pepper and Morgan. He was happy. After years and years of ignoring his own desires in order to protect Earth’s entire population, he finally got to rest and start a family. Steve was never given this option before. He got to prove himself as a soldier, a hero, and a friend in every movie we have seen him in. In the 70 years he was frozen he lost everyone he loved and his entire livelihood, and when he “thawed out”, for lack of a better term, he went straight back to fighting and risking his life for people. Of course he could theoretically make a life with Sam and Bucky, but considering how difficult Bucky has had it recovering from his brainwashing, and how his friendship with Sam seems more brotherly than the domestic bliss Steve never experienced, this option is not a fulfilling end to his story in the MCU.

As much as I would love him and Bucky to escape to the countryside and raise a bunch of dogs and babies together, that’s not what their relationship is within the canon. Not only is Bucky his closest friend, he’s the only connection he has to his life that he lost before his plane went down. It’s the super-soldier equivalent scenario of finding out there’s only one other person you know in a new school so you stick with each other for the comfort of familiarity. Bonds like that are very special but they do not always equate to the romance that Steve desired with Peggy.

I think we should just let him have this one and enjoy watching him internally suffer when his niece, Sharon, gets born 😂

I get what you’re saying, absolutely, and I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve it, I’m just saying it’s out of character. He’s done so much and should rest now, but he wouldn’t want to. He said the man who wanted stability and a family went into the ice, and a different man came out, so it just seems completely out of character, in my opinion.
