All set up for the Christmas Fair: Waddesdon’s reorientation towards commercial viability has meant that the stakes are high this year. (at Waddesdon Manor) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIPiWCSALth/?igshid=utwayugsi440

Palm House: Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. The memories of the heat and humidity in this Grade 1 listed ‘plant cathedral’ coupled with a constant stream of visiting public gasping their wows as they enter through the doors, not forgetting the unparalleled collection of botanical Crown Jewels, will never leave me. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDJ7tc7A-v1/?igshid=12dxml2p9zv0n

One of a number of reasons why we should be reducing the extent to which we mow; especially beneath established trees, is that you never know what botanical gems you might be suppressing. Since arriving at NT Waddesdon to lead the horticultural Team on the Manor Gardens, I have pushed hard (with the support of the Gardens Manager) to minimise the herbage we cut down in this Grade 1 Listed landscape. Here we see an extensive and increasing stand of Saxifraga granulata colonising the dappled shade afforded by the Lime Trees. This plant has one of the most regal blooms of the British wildflower palette. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAm3u0igckw/?igshid=vhvqaynscjtc
Granted, it isn’t a subject that captivates many, but well managed compost production can help kick start biological processes that we have only begun to grasp. The humid acid-containing sticky slime that makes compost colloidal (gluey) is rich food for bacteria and other forms of soil life that form a symbiotic relationship with plant root systems, enabling the plant to resist pathogens and making what we see above ground glow with vitality. Am I beginning to excite you? https://www.instagram.com/p/CAm3q4vA9gl/?igshid=1pbfxkh5i075e
The English Heritage run chiswick Park Gardens is one of London’s horticultural jewels. Sadly however, the structural Box plantings are currently being devoured by the Box tree caterpillar (larval stage of Cydalima perspectives). London has been a hotspot for this pest for some years now. With up to 4 generations possible depending on the length and warmth of the season, Landscape curators need to be vigilant and ready to spray. The biological agent Bacillus thuringiensis is an effective control of this and other lepidopterous pests. #PeterTurskiGardenManagement #HeritageGardens https://www.instagram.com/p/CAPXGKOANoF/?igshid=13bay3mov134f
The white frothy flowers of Anthriscus sylvestris, most commonly known as Cow Parsley and sometimes as wild chervil, are a common sight in meadows and drainage ditches along field boundaries. A good pollinator plant & evocative of a romantic idyll of rural life, the decision was taken to mow it down. Why? Because it is a very strong competitor, crowding out other more desireable species in the meadow matrix and a very strong seeder. The decision was further made difficult in that this area contained a substantial population of white Colchicum, or Autumn Crocus in full leaf. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made regardless. Peter Turski is doing the mowing here on an American built Ventrac, at Waddesdon Manor, the aim of the exercise is to control the spread of this plant into the orchid rich area known as Daffodil Valley. It is believed that people’s sense of smell waxes and wanes. In this sublime April weather, I was blessed with a delicious sweet whiff from the inflorescence panicles of Azara serrata, a Chilean plant often grown on the shelter of a wall. Lax in habit and, on moister soils quite vigorous, it can nevertheless be freely pruned into submission. #GardenCulturebyPeterTurski https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YZi13AWZS/?igshid=fll8k66meet6
