“When most people think about The Beach Boys it’s because of Brian Wilson. I personally have the utmost respect for Brian, but Carl Wilson has always been my favorite member of the band. From his voice to his underrated guitar playing, to his work on my favorite Beach Boys’ album ‘Holland,’ to just his personality in general. I had always heard about what a nice guy Carl was and his overall humility as a person, but I was still touched firsthand by his behavior when he worked with me during the sessions of my ‘Wildflowers’ album. He seemed thankful for the opportunity to work with me which I found ironic since he was always a musical hero of mine. It reminded me of how it was when I first worked with George Harrison. People like Carl and George don’t want to be looked at as legendary music figures, they just want to be treated as regular people. I have definitely learned from that In my own career.” - Tom Petty, MOJO (1995) “I also love that Carl Wilson sang on that [‘Hung Up and Overdue’]. We were talking about wouldn’t it be great to hear Carl on this song because it’s got some very Brian Wilson-type chords. Somebody called Carl up and he just came over to the house and did the overdubs here, and he came up with some great parts on the song. That was a great day!” - Mike Campbell, Wildflowers And All The Rest liner notes “I remember how excited Tom was that Carl Wilson agreed to come down and sing on this one. Me, Tom, and Carl sat on the floor at Mike [Campbell]’s studio and meditated before the session.” - Rick Rubin, ibid

Rest in peace, Tom Leadon. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
“When I left the Epics, Tom Leadon came with me. Like me, Tom was a teenager who wanted to play originals.” - Tom Petty, Runnin’ Down A Dream
“Peter [Bogdanovich] told me when he came to Nashville to film my part of the movie [Runnin’ Down A Dream] that Tom was thinking about it [reviving Mudcrutch]. Tom’s daughter, Adria, watched some of my interview from the movie with him (a lot of which was not in the movie) and she says that’s what sealed the deal. That Tom said some wonderful things about me then, how I just loved him and had never asked him for anything, and how he just had to get back together with me. [...] Tommy was the closest friend I’ve ever had in my life and he was truly a wonderful, unique person who was a natural entertainer and so much fun to be with. And I miss him terribly.” - Tom Leadon, American Blues Scene, October 11, 2019

"I feel like a lucky man. A lot of people really struggle to find out what they want to do in life, but I knew as soon as I saw Elvis Presley, when I was 11. From that point, music became my religion, my nourishment. It was also a safe haven for me. My life was very turbulent as a child and a little scary, and music made everything seem right. It has also pulled me through some other dark times." - Tom Petty, Los Angeles Times, March 15, 2002

This was the very first studio session I ever did and I was very nervous, but Tom was incredibly patient and made me very relaxed, within 10 minutes, I was shooting like a veteran. If you don't know what you're doing, pretend like you do." - Richard E. Aaron, Morrison Hotel Gallery
