Seeing all the people brush aside Ferran wearing a “Make Spain Great Again” hat is beyond shameless. I understand the assumption is that Ferran was mocking Donald Trump and MAGA by wearing the hat, and I won’t dispute whether it was intentional or a joke. Still, regardless of his intentions, it’s backfired miserably. This is Trump’s America, where his followers are too stupid to understand when people are laughing at them and not with them. All it takes is a quick look through social media to see all the Trump supporters rallying for Ferran, talking about how “A socialist might run Spain but PATRIOTS are still alive and well!” Ferran is a grown man; regardless of whether he knew the extent of his actions, it doesn’t negate the fact that he should have at least known how his actions could be twisted to serve an agenda in favour of Trump. Don’t just excuse his blunder by saying, “Oh, it was just a joke”, because not everyone knew that, and that’s assuming it was a joke. Don’t sweep this under the rug in favour of unquestioningly supporting Ferran; part of supporting a player also means knowing when to criticise them rightfully.
Often with thousands of likes, there are plenty more posts just like these to be found, whether Ferran meant to wear the hat as a joke and as a way to mock Trump, unless he publicly comes out and states that was his intent, his actions are becoming a figurehead for far-right supporters in Europe and in America.
