Dead Lake speaks no Stars
A lake that rests too long may seem perfect.
Its waters are calm, its surface reflects the stars.
But tell me, child, what happens when no rains fall,
when no rivers flow, when no storm ever stirs it?
The lake dries. Its bed cracks and hollows.
The stars it once mirrored vanish,
for a dead lake speaks no stars~
So it is with the soul that clings only to stillness,
refusing the rains of change, the storms of passion,
the seasons of sorrow and joy.
Life is not in stagnation but in currents,
winds and waves that return stronger, fuller, alive.
Beware, then, of the hollow lake within.
Better to be an ocean: ever-changing,
This is perhaps the best way to explain the heart of Gnosis, the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching (道德经), and the danger of a wrong understanding of Nihilism.
The Luminaries spoke of a lake. Still, clear, it reflects the stars above. But if no rains replenish it, if no rivers flow into it, if no storms stir its waters, then the lake dries. And when it dies, it reflects nothing. A dead lake speaks no stars.
The Tao Te Ching teaches us that the Way is ever-changing, ever-yielding. “The stiff and unyielding is the way of death; the soft and flowing is the way of life.” To be like the living water is to embrace change, storms, and seasons. To resist them in search of perfect stillness is to become hollow.
In Gnosis, every thought, feeling, and motion is an emanation of the Living Father. These are not meant to be frozen but to flow, currents of the Divine returning to their Source. To reject the flow is to fall into forgetfulness, mistaking absence for Truth.
And here lies Nihilism’s shadow: many think it is freedom from illusion, but in truth, it can be the dried lake, a soul that refuses meaning, refusing even the rains of renewal. True Gnosis does not deny life; it sees through its impermanence to find the eternal currents flowing beneath.
Thus, the teaching is clear: do not become a hollow lake, clinging to lifeless stillness. Become like the ocean and the wind, ever-changing, ever-returning, always alive.
Now it is up to you: how you carry the will of creation. For the current’s flow rests in your palm, your heart, and your mind.
Guard yourself well—lest the void claim you.
