danny doesn't want people to know that he's really not in that good of a place so he just starts blaming all of his emotional problems on spectra. this happens like once every few weeks. jazz will come to him and say "danny i'm getting really worried about you" and danny says '"that darn spectra must be messing with me again!" and then he goes and fights her. it's really a win win situation for the two of them because danny gets to pretend nothing is wrong with him and just being around danny makes spectra feel pretty powerful. fighting spectra also acts as a bit of a placebo and makes danny feel a bit better because he can pretend that spectra actually WAS the reason he was feeling so bad. this guy LOVES blaming his emotional problems on external factors.

Danny becoming increasingly more afraid of his half-ghost disposition is such an interesting concept to think about.

After fighting what would be his evil self in TUE, he writes off him turning evil as an influence from Vlad’s ghost but as he gets older, maybe those traits weren’t so exclusive to Vlad after all.

Danny starts to understand that maybe he DOES need to learn control. Control over his ghost side. Who better to learn it from than the only other half-ghost in the world?

It becomes kinda a paradoxical mental battle of

“Is it really a good idea to take mentorship from my furture’s other EVIL HALF?” Or

“What consequences will I face if I never hold control of my ghost side”

At the end of the day Danny is more afraid of himself than any enemy he has ever fought. He has such a skewed perspective on who he is as a person. He doesn't trust himself to be able to save people, and he doesn't trust himself to not turn evil if nothing is there to hold himself back. When in reality, while he does bad stuff sometimes, he consistently chooses to learn and grow from his mistakes and be a good person with little outside influence. He has nothing to worry about, but he does worry about it because in his mind, he's a total freak.

He's afraid of himself, what he's become, and what he might become. So afraid that he'd even trust Vlad Masters more than himself if he thought there was a chance he could go down the wrong path. Ironically, that fear is strong enough that it could be the thing that leads him down that wrong path.

To me this ties in a lot with what Phantom represents symbolically. Phantom imo acts as a vehicle for Danny's coming of age story. Danny is terrified of his ghost half. He constantly tries ignore it and get rid of it in any way he can, but he keeps coming back to it because it's not something that will just go away. And then he sees this alternate version of himself that grew up and embraced his ghost side and was totally evil. He's terrified of facing who he is and who he might become because what if that person is bad? It's better for everything to stay exactly the same. If he can keep careful control over every part of himself that could be undesirable then everything will be okay. He can just keep being a normal teenager forever.

The impostor syndrome is great with this one.

i think about dp being taken in a cosmic horror direction a lot. the ghost zone and dannys ghost half serving as the "forbidden knowledge" that the mcs come into contact with. after seeing and understanding it danny can never go back to the life they used to live. it separates them from the rest of humanity and as hard as they try to act the same way as they used to, the "regular" world now feels small and fake compared to this new reality they've been pushed into. some people are afraid of ghosts, some hate them, some worship them, some want to use them for personal gain, but this new supernatural reality is a force that is much greater than any human fully comprehend, much less control or defeat. its so strong that people who are able to understand can't even be considered human anymore. i think it would be a cool concept to play around with.

vlad and danny are both exceptionally good at denial but vlad specializes in "i can fix it" denial while danny is really good at "it didnt happen" denial

i dont think vlad ever fully internalized what happened to him. he's willing to acknowledge that he died and became something inhuman, which is a step ahead of danny who is only willing to say he got ghost powers and sometimes make a morbid joke, but it hasn't really sunk in for him. since the moment he died he's been thinking more about how he can use his new abilities to his advantage. of course he's inhuman, he's far superior to every other creature on the planet. but when it gets into actually thinking about The Implications he just can't do it. any amount of grief or fear that he feels over his death he just turns into rage directed at jack and the world around him.

vlad feels like if he gets rich enough, if he can win over maddie, if he can kill jack, if he can get his life back to The Way It's Supposed To Be, then everything will be fixed. he might even be able to find a way to fix himself.

it also means badger cereal have a long way to go before they're able to actually repair their relationship. because even if they both want to be on good terms, vlad is unable to acknowledge what exactly he did wrong and instead just tries to Fix It by being overly supportive, while danny refuses to acknowledge that he was hurt by anything vlad did at all. so they're at a bit of a stalemate. and until they're both able to have an actual conversation about the harm vlad did their relationship will enter a cycle "we're friends now!" -> build up of resentment leading to avoidance -> full on fighting -> tense interactions for months before the return to "we're friends now!"

danny being embarrassed by vlad's behavior the way he is with the rest of his family sometimes. since they're the only known halfas other ghosts kind of automatically associate danny and vlad with each other which leads to danny being deeply humiliated when vlad does something embarrassing.

vlad: steals a precious artifact and is now monologuing in front of a group of ghosts about how he's going to use it to take over the ghost zone

danny: *hiding his face in his hands* "ohhh my god fright night i am so sorry about him. i swear i did not know he was going to do this. i'll talk to him about it please don't uninvite us from the christmas party."
