A lot of people have been posting wondering “why are people are so upset by Carrie Fisher’s passing?” Let me break it down:

1. She is the leading lady of arguably one of the largest, most popular, and amazing sagas to exist. Her character was a strong female who rebelled against authority to do what was right for not only her self, but the universe.

2. She stared in multiple other films and appearances that were brilliant. Hello, When Harry Met Sally?

3. She openly talked about her mental health issues and tried to normalize the conversation. Carrie Fisher was a pure advocate for mental health and help for drug abuse.

4. She was hilarious and kind. Anyone who personally knew her talked about how downright funny she is.

That’s why. She was a role model to many women including myself. Just because you don’t understand why someone would grieve the loss doesn’t mean you should poke fun.

Carrie Fisher was living proof that even with a mental illness, nothing can stop you from doing what you love. It might take you a lot longer to achieve it, but it will be well worth it in the end.
