I couldn’t have thought of a bigger waste of time if I tried.
Right? Do you at least believe in what the church you go to believes in? Or is it your parents forcing you to go? So many questions. Sorry about that. I agree, though.

“It’s Christmas Even so you know what that means! Church. All. Night.”
You don’t seem too enthusiastic. It’s okay, I wouldn’t be either.
“Grandparents are wonderful,” Jonah smiles, “Awh, that’s a shame. I suppose he wasn’t a nice man, then?” he frowns, “Wow, yeah, good job. It’s yiddish slang. It means, like, nagging,” he shrugs, “It’s basically words only your bubba uses,” he laughs lightly.
Yeah, ahah, he never really was but it’s not really like you can change how a person acts or anything. Oooh, I see. And bubba is grandpa? But that makes more sense. The only other name for grandparents I know that’s in a different language is oma and opa, which are Dutch and German words. Usually around others I just say nana, because if I say oma I have to explain what that means and all.
“As Hindus, we believe in reincarnation. I’m sure they generated a great deal of good karma and I’m sure they’re happy in their new lives,” Aadhid nods before frowning, “I suppose that’s understandable. It’s strange then that she didn’t choose to abort when it was safe and legal. Although perhaps it wasn’t accessible to her at the time.”
Ahh, there we go! I’m agnostic, so I believe that there is a god or higher power, but not necessarily any of the ones that other religions have, I think. Yeah, man, I wouldn’t have a clue. Since I can’t ask her or anything. It’s weird to think about how your parents could have gotten rid of you but didn’t. I’m thinking maybe she was forced to keep it by someone in her life at that time.
“No, their arguing is kind of sweet in a weird way. It’s like, ‘Sal, you can’t wear that to dinner, it looks ridiculous.’ ‘I like it Miriam, you gave it to me a few years ago, for Chanukah, don’t you remember?’ ‘I remember but it was a gag cos it’s shlocky.’ And then he gets proper huffy and he’s like, ‘All you do is kvetsh!’ And then bubba hits him with some paper towels - I just realised you probably got very little of that,” Jonah laughs, “I’m sorry.”
It’s okay! It does sound pretty cute, once you explain it. My nana never got along with my grandpa like that. He’s always been an ass. I probably shouldn’t bad mouth him, but oh well. I’m gonna be honest, though, I have no idea what ‘kvetsh’ is. I’m actually surprised I caught that word.
“The best part of Chanukah is listening to your grandparents argue. They’re so adorable.”
Are you being sarcastic? Unfortunately I can’t pick up on that.
“An abandoned child, most likely. It’s alright, they’ve been dead for most of my life. No, I don’t remember them. It’s actually not really possible to form long term memories before the age of three, and I was only just. We have photos and videos, but as far as I can see, they only depict a man and a woman with a small boy, all of whom look slightly like me,” Aadhid shrugs, “I think it might be best for you not to know your parents. It sounds as if they aren’t particularly good people. Who rejects a child for what is, all in all, a fairly minor disability?”
Yeah, that makes sense. I thought so. But that’s good, and it’s good you know that they were good people. If there is an afterlife, I’m sure they’re watching over you. Maybe, yeah. I don’t think my dad knows I exist. My mom’s basically been disowned from our family, no one will talk about her. I dunno, I mean, I don’t think she even wanted me. She was 17 when she got pregnant.
Halloween is pretty great but Christmas will always be my favourite, the lights, the christmas food. It’s wonderful.
Christmas is pretty amazing. But I think Halloween will always have a special place in my heart. I just love everything about it, and it’s a little hard to explain, I guess. I love the Nightmare Before Christmas as well, and that incorporates a bit of both.
“I spent all of last night putting up christmas decorations. My house now looks like the north pole.”
I did that on the second week of November. I love Christmas. I mean, Halloween first of course, but Christmas is a close second.
“That’s terrible, I’m sorry about that. I don’t think you’re an orphan unless your parents are dead, but I guess they could be,” he shrugs, “I’d like to know my parents too, but alas, we never will. I was three when they died. I know they were good people. I think it’s interesting to know where you’ve come from. But, in the grand scheme of things, it’s not really important.”
“Hey, no, it’s alright. Yeah, that’s true. I don’t know what I’d be classified as. But I’m sorry about your parents. Do you remember them at all, or have pictures? That could help... or make it worse. That’s good though, I’m sure they loved you with all their hearts. I know nothing about either of my parents. My nana locked the attic just so I can’t get in and find out about my mum. She refuses to talk about her.”
“I think this game is not yours to play,” he said, marking another leg down. “I gotta say, though, I did use my extensive hangman knowledge to make this a hard word.”
“It really isn’t.” Phoenix giggled. “I think we should have a funeral, ‘cause this guy clearly isn’t gonna make it. I mean, how many more guesses do I have? One, right?”
“Well, I’m an orphan,” Aadhid shrugs, “Obvious answer, what about you?”
I am too. Kind of. Dunno, was abandoned at the hospital when my mum found out I was deaf. They found my nana, so I grew up with her. Dunno if that classifies as an orphan. Not really, I guess, but I’d love to know who my mum was. And my dad.
“I think I’ve been watching too much Doctor Who. I can’t stop thinking about the complexities of time travel.”
If you could travel through all of time and space, where would you go first?
“I’m afraid not,” he said with a laugh. He put another arm on the stick figure. “I can’t say there is a C, either. You should get more skills.”
“Okay, how about S?” Phoenix laughed softly. He was okay with losing a round of hangman - it just meant more practise for him to get better. “I should, but I don’t play this often. It’s nice though.”
Charlie smiled at Phoenix, nodding his head. “I won’t let that happen again, people are just so damn rude nowadays and it’s tiring.”
Y’know, people like you are the reasons why I love this school. Like, I hate them sometimes because of the assholes here but you guys make it a lot better. So thank you. Sorry if that’s weird, I’m just glad to have people like you in my life. I know they are though, I’m tired of it too. I just don’t know if I should tell the school or not.
“Okay well the second you find out who you better let me know. That’s not okay.”
I will, don’t worry. I know it’s not, but people think it’s weird. Like, having a deaf kid in a school of normal people. But if I tell the school, I’m afraid they’ll tell my Nana and she’ll ship me off to a deaf school.
