Thanks for sending in your college questions! Let’s get those answered.
1.) When can I start my FAFSA?
* The FAFSA officially opens on October 1st, and that is when you can start filling it out. There are some really helpful steps you can take before October 1st to make the whole process easier. First, you and a parent (if you do not know who to list as a parent come see me and we will figure it out!) should create an FSA ID (use the link at the end of this post!) and password. Write it down! It is a pain to recover a forgotten FSA ID and password. It’s also important to gather the right materials.
Here’s a list of what you will need, it is taken directly from studentaid.ed.gov:
Your Social Security number (it’s important that you enter it correctly on the FAFSA form!)
Your parents’ Social Security numbers if you are a dependent student
Your driver’s license number if you have one
Your Alien Registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student:
Foreign tax return and/or
Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau
Records of your untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits, for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student
Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate but not including the home in which you live; and business and farm assets for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student.
It seems like a lot, and it is, but once you have these gathered you can put them in a folder and hold onto them in case you need them again. That way you’re all set for filling out the FAFSA in October!

2.) Am I going to have $100,000 in loans?
* That is a great question! College is not cheap, but there are a lot of ways it can be made affordable. The first is to fill out the FAFSA. Why? A lot of scholarships require the FAFSA to be completed for students to receive them. Apply for scholarships, grants, work study, and save your money. It might not seem like a lot at first, but a few small scholarships can really add up to be a big financial help. There is a Scholarship Crate in the Student Services office and we already are starting to put scholarships in! Come in and start to fill some out!
These are some great questions! Keep an eye out for an introduction post coming this weekend.
