Structures and their expressions
I think that it is important to the structure's identity to have a type of expression...It is what makes the structure unique to the architect, community, and design. The expression doesn't have to massive or 'in your face' but at least having some traits that make them memorable.

Week 2 Response: Mesopotamia and Egypt
The geography of Mesopotamia and Egypt made construction and materials choice very limited due to their dry conditions. Aggregates were the most common types of materials used in forming bricks and large stones used along with mortar to seal the forms. Terra-cotta was common in Mesopotamia as well. Their stone structures were still erected in massive ways that would make you think they weren't limited on materials. I am still unsure of how the massive structures in Mesopotamia and Egypt were constructed but the evidence is clear that they were successful in resurrecting great buildings like the Mastaba tombs and Great Pyramids. I feel that contemporary architecture will always be influenced by ancient architecture because it was the past that paved the path towards the new techniques used now. The natural forms seen in structures in Egypt tell me that the people paid a great deal of faith and homage towards the Gods and what they represented. The pyramids make me feel as though they were building a way to be closer to the heavens and their gods and goddesses. Given there geography and landscape, creating structures that echoed it was probably their first thought. There are so many theories as to how the pyramids were constructed. I think the theory of ramps and pulleys is most believable. I want to give the Egyptians credit for creating such monumental structures. The connection that I can make between the pyramids and the Oklahoma City Memorial would be their overall size and simplicity in the sense that there are no bells and whistles; they are just great and meaningful all on their own.

Being one of OKC's most prominent architectural features, I think that the Devon Tower has the same theme as the pyramids with the equal sides and the shapes that it creates...The Skydance bridge also reminds me of basic structures especially with its strong lines and image. Both structures have a powerful presence utilizing lines with their repetition and balance.
