Wasting time makes you more productive. The coffee break has become an important facet of American working culture. However, coffee breaks could be much more productive than they currently are. In Europe, the originator of coffee breaks, coffee breaks are used as a chance to relax and recharge, which makes employees more productive. In Sweden, this break is so important they have a word for it: Fika. Fika is a chance for people to take a midmorning and midafternoon break, catch up on the news, socialize, and of course, have some coffee (Quito 1). This activity has many of the benefits Gelfand et al spoke of about employees being more social, aiding in building a ācollective effervescentsā, and building camaraderie among coworkers (Gelfand et al. 1). The positive impact on employee morale begs the question: How do coffee breaks impact workplace productivity? Coffee breaks, in the proper culture and environment, positively impact productivity by allowing workers to recharge and encouraging them to form human relationships with their coworkers, but companies (mostly in America) use coffee breaks as a means to squeeze more work from their employees, detrimentally affecting their productivity. To fix this, American business managers can allow their staff to take proper breaks and encourage healthy breaking practices.
Coffee breaks stimulate productivity by allowing employees to mentally recharge. Coffee breaks such as Fika encourage people to take their mind off work. In his paper āGive me a breakā, Farris Jabr, a writer for Scientific American, found that āTime off boosts productivity and job satisfactionā (Jabr 48). This shows that short breaks make people more productive. Furthermore, they also make people more content in their jobs. An example of this is Yael Averbuch. Averbuch wrotein a New York Times article about how Fika changed the way that she viewed her job and made her more enthusiastic about doing it (Averbuch 1). She says that these breaks helped her sort out the day's events in a non-stressful way. According to Averbuch, this state of ābeing and not doingā allowed her to prepare for the events that followed in her day. As a result of being more prepared, Averbuch could be more productive during her day, as well as less stressed. Fika, because of its stress relieving effects, makes people more productive.
Moreover, Coffee breaks did not negatively impact worker productivity relative to colleagues who didn't have a break. According to a study done on nursing staff, breaks don't disrupt workflow productivity in a significant way (Rogers et al 2). After monitoring 353 nurses for a period of 28 days, researchers found that there was no noticeable difference in the amount of mistakes made by people who had breaks when compared to those that did. What this can be used to show (other than that you can sometimes get away with overworking people without ill effect) is that taking a break doesn't cause people to make more mistakes. If in a job where repetition improves workers taking a break causes no ill effect, then for those that do not have similar jobs, it may offer some improvement. Breaks allow people to catch their breath, and at worst have no change on productivity, but at best makes people more efficient.
Coffee breaks, because of their implicit social atmosphere, encourage colleagues to build bonds together. This seems to be especially true in Sweden, making workers more productive at work and happier in their regular lives. According to Louise Morley, a researcher at Sussex University, a large part of the success of the Swedish welfare state is due to the communal trust built from Fika (Morley 1). She said that though it was stereotypical, Fika was representative of the positives of the Swedish community. Furthermore, Morley believes that the Swedish welfare state wouldn't exist without the social and material benefits provided by Fika. She also states that Fika creates the rest and recreation that is required to build proper bonds in a workplace. What this means is that people who connect with their coworkers are more conscious about their communities as well as their workplaces. Due to the fact that Fika allows people to build bonds, it greatly increases productivity through a foundation of mutual trust and respect.
An article published by the university newspaper of Linkƶping University (a university in Linkƶping, Sweden) concurs with this. In the article the author writes of how Fika is a societal institution, one which is quintessentially Swedish and acts as a glue that binds the Swedes together (āTime for fika?ā). They go on further to explain that Fika isn't just about drinking coffee, but rather about one's peers. The author says that Fika is a chance to get creative inspiration from colleagues, and to āblow the dust out of one's brainsā. The implication here is that because Fika allows people to take inspiration from the people around them, they are productive in new ways. This also shows that without Fika, the Swedish people probably wouldn't be able to maintain their communal individuality. The allowance of taking inspiration from other people allows them to pay homage to their coworkers and surroundings while still putting their own personal spin on it. Fika has made Swedish society more closely knit while still encouraging Swedes to be their own people.
In America, work culture inhibits the positive effects of breaks. Mark Bertolini broke his neck and started giving his employees breaks which made them happier. This CEO of a company which employs over 50,000 people, implemented yoga breaks into his company time schedule. When studied by psychologists, significant mental improvements were found in the employees (Jabr 2). The psychologists found that the employees were also less stressed, letting them sleep better. This mindfulness also aided them in boosting their productivity and overall health. Since employees were less stressed, they could focus more easily, which allowed them to improve their productivity. Further, a court case over the matter was decided in the United States court of appeals (āCoffee breakā 2). In Mitchell v. Greinetz (1955) a non precedential judge opinion was issued saying that ā"promotes more efficiency and results in greater output", which also established that breaks have to be paid by the employer (United States Court of Appeals, 10th circuit). This court opinion shows that breaks entice people to be more efficient, as well as making them overall more productive. However, as shown by the fact that this ended up being a court case, there are those who believe that breaks should not be given. This is most relevant for employers, who would deny their employees time off. What's more is that many employees are less productive at the margins of breaks (Carlin 1). This could be due to the fact that there is shame surrounding the connotation of taking a break in American work culture. When people are about to take a break (or have just gotten back from one) they may be less productive due to the fact that they feel shame for having the need to take a break. Overall, taking a break is generally looked down upon in American work culture and it took a CEO almost dying for him to realize how important they actually were.
In America, because of neoliberal attitudes, breaks are not used to their fullest extent. As a result of this, the culture surrounding taking breaks is one of shame and discouragement.
Some argue coffee breaks don't impact workflow, so employees don't need a break. This is a logical conclusion which relates to what Rogers and her team found: breaks don't affect productivity. What this shows is that if employees don't have breaks, their work would still be the same. This strengthens the argument of removing coffee breaks by implying that without breaks, people could get more done, since they have more time to work. What's more is that the culture around taking breaks is not one that allows for them to be implemented. In America, work culture is mostly focused on just that - working, shaming those who take breaks. Some studies have shown that, despite breaks improving productivity, work culture prevents breaks being added to a work schedule. This is exactly what was found by Gemma Ryde and her team at the University of Stirling in Scotland. After studying a company that had a plan of paid physical activity(PA) time, They concluded that the PA was beneficial, but overall frowned upon by the culture (Ryde 1). This means that given that breaks do positively impact productivity, they overall wouldn't be helpful because workers would feel pressured to not take them. While the first counter argument has a logical line of reasoning, it also ignores the plethora of other evidence that breaks positively influence productivity. The second counter argument is much more compelling, and points out a problem in our current culture: that workplace toxicity shames people for taking a break.
While it is true that if one is taking a break, they are not working. However that does not mean they are overall less productive. In fact, taking a break with coworkers has been found to make people more productive. According to a study by a group of researchers and professors at MIT āthe strength of an individualās social group was positively related to productivity (average call handle time) for the employees that we studiedā (Waber 2). What this means is that the more interlocked a group of colleagues is, the better they work together. Since taking a break allows people to get to know others better, they form those connections that make them more efficient. Returning to the Linkƶping article from before, the breaks and socialization anchorage creative problem solving. The article claims that fika allows coworkers to be more empathetic to their peers and help them solve issues they might have encountered in their work (ātime for fika?ā). In tandem, these show that even if people aren't working explicitly, they are still being productive. So despite the fact that employees may not be working during these breaks, they are still being productive, even more so than if there were no breaks.
It is clear that Americans don't take breaks in the same ways that Swedes do and thus lose out on potential productivity gains. Work culture should shift to encourage people to have better break taking practices. The main issue is that employers don't allow their workers to take breaks that stimulate productivity, except after near death experiences (Jabr 2). One of the best ways to fix this is to take a similar approach to fika and encourage breaks in the mid morning and mid afternoon. In the optimistic outcome of this employees would be more productive as well as build comradery such as how it did in Sweden (Morley 1). This has worked in other places, so it is reasonable to assume that it would work here. This is because regular break taking has been shown to positively impact workers in America (Jabr 2). If Americans take breaks more regularly, they will be more productive than if they did not.
Coffee breaks make people more productive and happy because they allow people to recharge and form connections with people they work with. Unfortunately they are often used improperly in America due to neoliberal attitudes and unwelcoming workplace habits. This is because people work better when allowed to relax after a period of work. Furthermore, they work more efficiently when they are comfortable around their colleagues. Workplace comradery has the added benefit of helping build a tighter overall society. The downside is that employers and coworkers in America have a mindset heavily focused on productivity. Many of those people also believe that if you are not working, you are not being productive. A solution that was used to solve this was by the CEO of an insurance company was to have employees take breaks together. When employees take breaks together the guilt of not being productive is lessened, and they are more able to take good breaks. Optimistically this would lead to a happier, more productive workplace.
Guys help??? I just had an unexplained (possibly religious?) experience. I was riding my ebike (electric bike) outside a city in my home country of Montenegro. It was around 3 am, well after dark. I was ready to be home, as I had already experienced some spooky sounds and shadowy figures in the road. As I approached this particular spot in the road, I saw a glow of bright white light. As I got closer, I saw human figures moving as if they were performing a ritual. A woman (whose name I later learned was Patricia), was in the center. She looked me dead in the eyes, and I was so shaken and startled that I fell off the bike. Sadly the rest of her posse heard my struggle and stopped their religious ritual to approach me. At this point Patriciaās hot pink hair grabbed my attention, possibly an homage to her religious belief. As they got closer, I frantically attempted to ignite the ignition, but to no avail. The collection of muscular men were all wearing sheer shirts with āIt will saveā with a picture of an ebike (electric bike) on the side of the road. The ebike (electric bike) was blue, but mine was red. To my horror, the men gathered closer and began to wave their LED lights at me until the bike started again. I tried to not question it too much before I raced away. If anyone knows of this mysterious woman named Patricia, please let me know. Her cloister of men was so hot, in a mysterious kind of way. Also, if anyone knows if that was a cult, please let me know, i would like to join.

Your OCs all are very interesting and seem to have a lot of depth! I was wondering; do you have any tips for how I could give my characters more personality? Thank you! š
FIRST OF ALL- thank u so much, im happy to hear tht!! but ALSO I had a wee think about this and I kinda think my character building in particular comes down to three traits that I don't see people ask a lot when making an OC!
[IMAGE TRANSCRIPT: "Parenting Style", "Who do you pretend you are?" and "Do something bad (really)"
I didn't want to make a whole post stretcher so these are the basic traits- but I will go in a bit more depth below the cut!
jellyfish are plants and its homophobic to say otherwise (im gay and i say so). if you have an issue, then cope i guess, i don't really care. cry about it.
for something to be a plant, it has to meet three basic conditions. these conditions are as follows: it has to grow from a seed, often attached to something at its young stages after being created, it has to not have brain functions, and it has to photosynthesize (get its energy from the sun).
Firstly, a jellyfish is really only the medusa stage of the plant, which has grown from an egg, or seed. After being released, the jellyfish seed plants itself onto a surface, usually a coral reef or the sea floor. From there it grows into its polyp stage, which consists of a stalk sprouting from the seed area with a large bulb on the end. Once it has finished this, it blooms and eventually releases, becoming an ephyra. From there, it becomes a medusa, or adult jellyfish, which releases its seeds and starts all over again. Because of these processes, jellyfish both come from a seed and remain attached to their environment for the main part of the beginning of their life.
Secondly, jellyfish don't have brains, and so they dont have brain activities. and i'm keenly aware that while this may seem mindless, and like i don't have a brain, i still have brain activity. i've checked. it's unfortunate. However, because jellyfish literally cannot have brains or thoughts or philosophy (which makes them better in many ways), they could be considered plants.
one could assert that in order for something to be a plant it must create its own energy, often through photosynthesis, but the absolute dunce who would think that this aids in their argument against me is quite wrong, for there are, in fact, jellyfish that photosynthesis, so,,, checkmate idiots ig. they might also argue that plants have to have cell walls, but there are plants that dont have cell walls, so this is also a null point.Ā
if you have not been convinced then you must accept the fact that you are wrong, but if you dont, then get well soon bestie. the end <3
Like, people who identify as Queer know the word is used like a slur. Trust me, we know.
So when we say āqueer is a slurā was started by terfs, maybe use some critical thinking and try to understand what we mean. That is, if you actually care about queer people and the damage terfs do, rather that just screaming āqueer is a slur!ā and ignoring the actual point.
Terfs did not like that queer was reclaimed. End of. This is a fact. Queer was too broad, too accepting, and embraced all the people they wanted gone. And I know y'all exclusionists feel the same but get pissed when we point it out so you deny it, but sit down and listen for a minute.
Queer was the preferred term for poc. For bisexuals. For trans people. For people with multiple identities. It neatly encapsulated everything, and was a friendly community to those who felt thrown under the bus by mainstream LGBT activism. It was a political and social statement, āyou treated my like I was different and weird, and guess what? I am and thatās something to be proud of.ā
So the response? āYou canāt use that word. Its bad. Its a slur.ā
And at the time, a lot of people rolled their eyes. Everyone knew why they didnāt like the word and brushed that off. It was fine.
So they started more subtly. āJust so you know this word is very harmful and is a slur so be careful how you use it :))) in case you didnāt know :)))) its a slur :))) friendly reminder :))) for the sake of other people of course :))))ā type shit on every post involving the word, including and especially posts simply mentioning self identification.
Always worded in friendly, concerned ways, like the derailment was meant to be nice and considerate, and not about normalizing their rhetoric.
And what happened because of that was a younger generation of community kids growing up with these statements being thrown at them and absorbed on every. Single. Post. That. Mentionioned. Queer.
The result? That same generation of kids cutting it all short, removing the meant-to-be-palatable niceness, to just say āqueer is a slur.ā
Exactly how it was originally intended. āQueer is a slur.ā People drop on posts where young queer people talk about it being a self identifier that actually fits them. āIts a slur,ā they comment, with nothing else, on posts they clearly didnāt read past that word, written by people twice their age who had reclaimed it before they were even born.
Its nasty. Its disgusting. Itās plain old bigotry, whether the people saying know it or not. It is a terf tactic, plain and simple.
And no one wants to deny that it is indeed used as a slur (right along with all the rest of our identities.) No one wants to be insensitive and force it on people who havenāt reclaimed it.
But invading queer peopleās posts to spit āqueer is a slurā is flat out queerphobic. You do the dirty work of terfs, of cis straight oppressors, by saying in one simple sentence: āits a dirty word, there is no pride in it, you havenāt/canāt reclaim(ed) it.ā
And regardless of your actual intentions, when you do this, that is EXACTLY what you are communicating and doing.
āQueer is a slurā is a terf movement. Stop fucking supporting terfs just because you want to pretend like it isnāt.
This is why I block people who sayĀ āQueer is a slur.āĀ
You quack like a terf, I block you like a terf.Ā
This thing was so weird to me when I first encountered it on tumblr, because like⦠in academia
queer studies
Ā is a thing. Queer Theory is a thing. If I search my Uniās library forĀ āqueerā I getĀ 138,481 results. Here are some of them:Ā
Queer in Europe : contemporary case studies / edited by Lisa Downing and Robert Gillett.
Queer Phenomenology, Sexual Orientation, and Health Care Spaces: Learning From the Narratives of Queer Women and Nurses in Primary Health Care, /Ā Cressida Heyes,Ā Megan Dean, Lisa Goldberg.
Playing With Time: Gay Intergenerational Performance Work and the Productive Possibilities of Queer Temporalities /Ā StephenĀ Farrier
Postcolonial and queer theories : intersections and essays / edited by John C. Hawley.
Queer Dickens : erotics, families, masculinities / Holly Furneaux.
Showing Your Pride: A National Survey of Queer Student Centres in Canadian Colleges and Universities /Ā John Ecker, Jennifer Rae, Amandeep Bassi
Mad for Foucault : rethinking the foundations of queer theoryĀ / Lynne Huffer.
Do those look like queerphobic texts? And do you think that most of the writers writing about queer theory are straight? Lols. If you donāt want to be personally be called queer, thatās cool. You donāt get to stop other people using the word though. Itās ours now and weāre keeping it.
Did I reblog this already? If I did, doesnāt hurt to blog it again. I usually unfollow people who use the tag (or the equilivant) q-slur. Because fuck you, Iām queer. Have been since like 1986.
queer was mlm slang/code in the 18th and 19th centuries, turned into a slur in the 20th century
when we say it was reclaimed, we mean it was reclaimedĀ

āpity is uniquely dehumanizingĀ“. I think about that a lot. I think about it, and I think about how I hate being pitied, but I still crave it. I think of how I'm tired of forcing myself to be ok, and how I just want to stop for a chance. how i want to scream and cry, and feel nothing but the sheer pain of it, but i also think about how people have it worse. and I think about how I hate myself for that, for feeling like I deserve to be able to feel bad when so many others feel worse. and I think about how I'm tired of all the conflict: I want to be alone, but I so deeply want the company of a friend. I don't want to work, but I still want to help.
I don't want to survive, I want to live. I want to know other peoples wit and their satire, to read of their silver tongues and honeyed words. how i long to feel joy and pain, but not my own. I want to feel and want to make others do the same. but then i'm reminded that i am not living, but surviving in spite, and with every joy i have, it must be paid back in full by sobs and tears.

a paper without a thesis, how unheard of, i know. this doesn't deserve one; it's not an argument, its an explanation. a history, a recounting, maybe even a sob story if you're so inclined. i don't care what you call it, because its just something I need said, because i'm tired of having not.
Some people have no right to be real. they have no right to exist in their capacity, or to say the things that they say. they don't deserve the credence that they are so often afforded, or the space that we give them in our heads. but then why does it hurt so much? why do they have to be forgotten only to be brought back up when its most inconvenient?Ā
i try to believe that i don't hold grudges and that i let things go easily, but to the people whos words work their ways into me and refuse to leave - the threats and the demeaning - i have nothing but malice. there are some thoughts better left unspoken, untyped. maybe this would have gone better off untyped, but so would the threats of raping me to death. the comments on how my only use was pleasing other people with my body. the slurs that i was called. ill be honest, it hurt, and it still does, but i couldn't let go of that community, it was the only one i had, and who were these few people in it to push me out?Ā
but maybe i should have left. gone away and started over, found a place where i wouldnt be told i am the reason that gay people are hated and killed. but all the same, i stayed, and tried to move on. all was well, for a time. i found new friends and kept the old ones that i wanted, and let the whole thing scab over. that was 2.5 years ago. but now, with his āi like the tiktoks that make fun of the lgbtq community because i like dark humourā, that simple kid in my class has brought it all back. the dread that i felt and the loneliness i had to deal with. the pain and harassment that i went through. its not dark humour, its oppression.
I am ok, not because I truly am, but because I have no other options. i will either live as myself, or i die, there is no in between.Ā
and its not ok. nothing is ok, and it will never be ok as long as these things happen. its not ok that people continue in their ignorance that all but willingly hurts others. its not ok that people celebrate the deaths of others. its not ok that people are upset by others like this. its not ok that we have to deal with it. but what else is there? only belittlization and ridicule.
we are not soft, and we are not fragile, but we are cracked, sometimes even shattered, and glued back together, forcing ourselves to be ok, even when all that holds us together is our cheap glue of blocking things out. we are strong, but one only has so much strength, and trying to fight for our place in a society that clearly doesn't want us to have it is fatiguing. if you think us weak or that we complain too much, think twice, once about the abuse we suffer throughout our lives, then again about if a weak person could struggle through it all and still be here.Ā
I am not living on will, but surviving in spite.
hronn utgardson was born to utgard þorson, a small game hunter who lived near modern day trondheim, close trolla. he lived there for most of his life, existing mostly from what he caught and also from the berries and grains he found growing wildly. he didnāt really have money, but he didnāt need any, and traded things he had caught for the necessities he couldnāt make himself, like cloth and metal worked things such as spearheads and cookware. he lived alone for most of his adult life (most of his village had burned down when he was 17, most people he knew died, and those who didnāt moved to find new settlements), but one day he came back from hunting to find a young woman in his cabin, and she appeared to have escaped from rather unpleasant circumstances.
When questioned, she didnāt seem to have answers, having forgotten almost everything in her life. utgard allowed her to stay for as long as she needed, and eventually they had a child ,(because of course they did), but the child wasnāt quite what they expected, with characteristics of both a man and a woman, not really being either. They decided to raise the child female, naming them hronn utgardsdottr, but allowed them to be helpful to their father, as long as they got their traditionally femanine chores done first.
Since a young age, Hronn was always interested in the more mystic things of their life; the howling at night, the lights in the sky, the things that always disappeared on a second glance, and of course the things their letters did when they drew them just so. every winter they would sit awake at night and watch the things that went by in the sky, or hope to see that giant cat they could have sworn theyād seen when they were younger, but as they got older they had more and more things to do. their father had sustained a bad injury when hronn was about 12, and over the years utgards mobility got worse and worse.
but as utgardās hunting slowed, hronn was allowed to hunt alone more and more, and they revelled in it, being alone in the forest put them closer to their gods than they could ever feel stuck in the cabin. Their skills progressed so quickly that by their 16th birthday, the age of adulthood, they were good enough to be considered a master hunter. for them, this was an achievement, but a year bright with fortune is also one thatās marred by darkness, and in hronns case, the darkness came in the death of their father, which left them to take care of their mother, whose health was declining rapidly.Ā
hronn despised the next few years of their life, forced into taking care of someone who couldnāt provide for anyone else, made into only being able to fish for meat, and not allowing themselves to stray too far into the forest. They hated the constriction, but wouldnāt let themself be happy because they knew that as soon as they returned, it would vanish. but eventually their patients wore thin, and they left into the forest, never to return home, leaving their mother to die alone.
three bitter winters had passed since they left, but still they persevered, hunting for food, camping where they needed, but never staying in one place for too long. they hunted everything they needed, and stole what they couldnāt hunt, becoming infamous for their skill at slipping in and out of villages unnoticed. During those three years hronn had changed - their body built a higher resistance to the elements, their distaste for others grew, but their knowledge of the world, both natural and metaphysical, was what changed most.Ā
the people knew the gods and monsters were there, of course they did, their parents told them stories as children, and their parents before them, and their parents still. But hronn knew how to find them, and how to defend themself, if necessary. they knew how to gut a troll in the swing of a longsword, how to kill a dragon with the fell of their axe, how to ward away the things that go bump in the night, but most importantly they knew about the howling that mesmerised them as a child: The hunt. And they knew that they wanted to join.
They started doing all they could to get better and better, trying to attract the attention of lord odin and his entourage, to prove that they were worthy. but one night, after a particularly bad day of hunting, they got frustrated, and copied the sound of the hunt, even though they knew it could end very, very poorly for them. and they thought it would; as soon as they started, their campfire went out, and the air went calm. They looked around, ready for a fight, but they didnāt get one, only a branch falling from a tree above them, knocking them outā¦
they awoke what they assumed was the next morning in a warm and comfortable bed, the smell of earth and stew washing over them. They tried sitting up, but an older woman dressed in white kept them from doing so completely. she asked them their name, and hronn responded āhronn utgardsdo-son. hronn utgardsonā. From this moment on, Hronn refused to let their past define them. The woman told them that she and her sisters had found them in the forest two days ago, half buried in snow, and brought them back here. the women gave hronn some stew, then made them rest more.
hronn stayed with the lady and her sisters for another month, or so they guessed, hardly allowed to leave the bed until a week until their stay. sometimes the women would say or ask things that hronn didnāt understand how they knew, things about their life that they hadnāt told the women before, but finally the women asked why they had imitated the sound of the hunt, and hronn answered, saying that they wished to join, and found no other way to achieve an audience.Ā

the women scolded hronn, but did not force them to leave. They stayed for another few days, then left, returning to the woods once more. they were alone again, but thats how they were happy - they didn't have to look out for others, and they could do what they wanted, no need to worry how their actions impacted others.Ā
one night, a few years after their stay with the women, hronn came across a man at the edge of a pond. the stranger has a hat pulled over his eye and a walking stick with the figure of a raven carved into the end. hronn knew who this was, but decided it would be best not to say. they approached the man, greeting him. the interaction was strange, they hadn't met anyone else in years, but this man wasn't like most others, afterall what is a man to a god? the man offered hronn two feathers, a thought and a memory, and hronn carefully picked one, hoping for a thought, but their luck would have it, and as soon as they took hold of the feather, their vision grew watery as they were immersed in the past, on the day they left their mother. They saw themself gathering what they needed to survive, and leaving their mother behind, the feather filling in what they forgot or hadnt known. There was a flash of light, then another, then another, each showing a scene drawing closer to the end of their mothers life.
hronns knees gave out from under them, breaking their hold of the feather, ending the visions of hronns dying mother. āmorư av din móðirā the man said, standing over hronn. they swallowed hard, glaring up at the man. matricide. that's why the man accused hronn of. and that's what hronn had done. because of them leaving, their mother was dead, and this man, odin, now knew that.
odin hauled hronn onto their feet, āyou are to join me and my comrades. if you refuse, they will know what we have just seen, and they wont be as forgiving about it as iā. hronns heart pounded in their throat. what had once been their dream - joining the hunt - was now their punishment. their freedoms would be stripped, and their self imposed solitude would come to an end. they nodded, and their life as a free spirit ended, now a servant to odin, forced into the cohorts of his army.Ā
hronn utgardson was born to utgard þorson, a small game hunter who lived near modern day trondheim, close trolla. he lived there for most of his life, existing mostly from what he caught and also from the berries and grains he found growing wildly. he didn't really have money, but he didn't need any, and traded things he had caught for the necessities he couldn't make himself, like cloth and metal worked things such as spearheads and cookware. he lived alone for most of his adult life (most of his village had burned down when he was 17, most people he knew died, and those who didn't moved to find new settlements), but one day he came back from hunting to find a young woman in his cabin, and she appeared to have escaped from rather unpleasant circumstances.
When questioned, she didn't seem to have answers, having forgotten almost everything in her life. utgard allowed her to stay for as long as she needed, and eventually they had a child ,(because of course they did), but the child wasn't quite what they expected, with characteristics of both a man and a woman, not really being either. They decided to raise the child female, naming them hronn utgardsdottr, but allowed them to be helpful to their father, as long as they got their traditionally femanine chores done first.
Since a young age, Hronn was always interested in the more mystic things of their life; the howling at night, the lights in the sky, the things that always disappeared on a second glance, and of course the things their letters did when they drew them just so. every winter they would sit awake at night and watch the things that went by in the sky, or hope to see that giant cat they could have sworn they'd seen when they were younger, but as they got older they had more and more things to do. their father had sustained a bad injury when hronn was about 12, and over the years utgards mobility got worse and worse.
but as utgardās hunting slowed, hronn was allowed to hunt alone more and more, and they revelled in it, being alone in the forest put them closer to their gods than they could ever feel stuck in the cabin. Their skills progressed so quickly that by their 16th birthday, the age of adulthood, they were good enough to be considered a master hunter. for them, this was an achievement, but a year bright with fortune is also one that's marred by darkness, and in hronns case, the darkness came in the death of their father, which left them to take care of their mother, whose health was declining rapidly.Ā
hronn despised the next few years of their life, forced into taking care of someone who couldn't provide for anyone else, made into only being able to fish for meat, and not allowing themselves to stray too far into the forest. They hated the constriction, but wouldn't let themself be happy because they knew that as soon as they returned, it would vanish. but eventually their patience wore thin, and they left into the forest, never to return home, leaving their mother to die alone.
three bitter winters had passed since they left, but still they persevered, hunting for food, camping where they needed, but never staying in one place for too long. they hunted everything they needed, and stole what they couldn't hunt, becoming infamous for their skill at slipping in and out of villages unnoticed.
They looked around, ready for a fight, but they didn't get one, only a branch falling from a tree above them, knocking them outā¦
they awoke what they assumed was the next morning in a warm and comfortable bed, the smell of earth and stew washing over them. They tried sitting up, but an older woman dressed in white kept them from doing so completely. she asked them their name, and hronn responded āhronn utgardsdo-son. hronn utgardsonā. From this moment on, Hronn refused to let their past define them. The woman told them that she and her sisters had found them in the forest two days ago, half buried in snow, and brought them back here. the women gave hronn some stew, then made them rest more.
hronn stayed with the lady and her sisters for another month, or so they guessed, hardly allowed to leave the bed until a week in to their stay. sometimes the women would say or ask things that hronn didn't understand how they knew, things about their life that they hadn't told the women before, but finally the women asked why they had imitated the sound of the hunt, and hronn answered, saying that they wished to join, and found no other way to achieve an audience.Ā

pulling stunts that strengthen the publicās perception of gay people as satanic perverts is a shitty thing to do. the end
counterpoint: itās really funny.
lil nas x: i was demonized from a young age because of the unique intersection of my blackness and queerness within the church and now im reclaiming that for myself and showing young queer people that they always have a place where theyāll be accepted, even if they have to carve it out of the hell they were promised
random shitforbrains tumblr users: actually portraying queer people, including yourself, as sexually empowered or subversive in any way makes the homophobes mad :/// maybe just act normal??? idk pulling that āāstuntāā is kinda homophobic
OPās statement implies that there is a way of acting that will convince the bigots that gay people are not satanic perverts.
There isnāt. Every single method has been tried: Being quiet. Blending in. Acting like middle class suburban straight couples. Being closeted and only finding partners who will keep the secret. Having one partner publicly take the role of another gender. (And then acting like a suburban straight couple.) Being ALONE, and just pining quietly for years.
None of it works. When the straights figure out who the gay people are, even if they are abstinent and solitary, thereās a swarm of bigots ready to denounce all queer people as evil, as corrupting children, as causing the downfall of society. A swarm of bigots ready to physically attack them to drive them off.Ā
There is no polite enough, no ordinary enough, no invisible enough to keep us safe.
So fuck that.
Queer people should act like they want to act. If part of that is going all in for theĀ āI am your worst hellscape nightmareā tropes, thatās part of reclaiming the right to be full members of society.Ā
And queer people of color have at least twice as much right to ignore all the stupidĀ ādonāt do that because youāll offend people!!!ā rules.
What offends those people is queer people of color existing, not whatever they did that got them noticed. The bigots just like to pretend that the issue isĀ āI donāt want to see itā instead ofĀ āI donāt want the person who did that, to exist.āĀ
Because if the issue isĀ āI donāt want to see itā - just donāt watch the video.Ā
Specially, LIL NAS X tried that. Yāall remember his first his? Old Town Road? With the lyrics:
Cheated on my baby
You can go and ask her
My life is a movie
Bull riding and boobies
Cowboy hat from Gucci
Boy was STEALTH. AND WHAT DID THEY DO TO HIM????? They OUTED HIM. OUT OF REVENGE FOR BEING BETTER AT THE GAME THAN THEY WERE. FOR BEING A BLACK QUEER MAN WITH A HIT. THEY. OUTED. HIM.
Yāall DO NOT get to tell him to sit down and shut up about his gayness when he LITERALLY DID THAT AND WAS OUTED. what happened to the quiet polite gays, you ask?
Yāall killed, bullied and outed them so youāre stuck with us. Deal with it.

Performative Purity has never kept any person of color, queer folks, and ESPECIALLY queer persons of color safe in the eyes of a society that WANTS to hate us for existing as is. NEVER.
