It may not have been an intimate date with a non-existent significant other that he was expected to be on that Valentine’s Day, but Finn figured that helping a little girl cut out hearts while her parents filled out paperwork was better than what he probably would’ve been doing had he not been working. It most likely would’ve involved watching sappy romcoms on TV while surrounded by various takeout cartons as he avoided being invited out by well-meaning friends and being the third…or fifth…or seventh wheel in the group. This was good.
Saying goodbye as the family left, Finn headed towards the next patient, drawing back the curtain with one hand as he looked down at the clipboard that he held with his other hand. He looked up and froze, half because the other man was that good looking and because it looked like he was checking him out…but he shook his head and walked further in, closing the curtain behind him. Those were not good thoughts to have and someone must’ve already given the man drugs for the pain—there was no way the man was actually hitting on him, even if he might’ve wished he was.
❝ Finn Katarn, ace nurse, will definitely try and get you out of the ER ASAP with as little crying as possible, ❞ he introduced in a similiar manner as Poe had. ❝ Well, Mister Dameron, while this may be the night to try and impress your partner, maybe something a little less adventurous next time, huh? ❞ Finn joked lightly as he put down the clipboard and placed himself in front of the iced ankle. ❝ May I? ❞ Rolling up the pant leg to see the injury better, he lifted the ice pack and frowned at the purple colouring. ❝ Tell me if this hurts, ❞ he said as he began gently prodding at and around the swollen area.
it had started out innocently enough, a job through the park while they were both stateside. it didn’t happen often. one or both of them were usually out flying fighters somewhere overseas. but they had taken the week to hanging out. bar crawls, jogs through the park, that sort of thing. jess’ newest girlfriend was great at keg stands ( so was poe, in his earlier years. ) it had hurt his single sensibilities just a bit, doing everything with his best friend & her girlfriend. so they half joking challenge had been accepted wholeheartedly. now he was paying the price. at the nurse’s words, poe scoffed, his chest puffing ever so slightly when he spoke.
“ i’ve been through SERE training. basically, they did a lot of shit to me & i still got to be a pilot. “ survival, evasion, resistance, & escape. it was the training that all pilots were made to do before they were allowed to go up in the air, just in case they were captured. had to make sure they wouldn’t give up state secrets. “ hit me with your best shot, buddy. “ he gestured to his ankle, scoffing at his next statement. “ it was my best friend & her girlfriend. i’ve been a third wheel all week, man. jess got back from active duty in the sandpit. and i’ve been training rookie pilots down at the base. so we haven’t seen each other in six months. “ he shrugs, grimacing when finn starts to probe his swollen ankle. “ of course it hurts, pal. it’s broken. “ he smiled, looking at the nurse, face heating up. how inappropriate was it to ask for a nurse’s number when he had been given a pain pill & he was currently working on your broken bone ??
“ so uh, you been a nurse long ?? “ he asked in what he thought was a casual voice. when finn moved his ankle to inspect the other side, poe sucked in a deep breathe, face contorting, clearly uncomfortable from the pain. “ okay yeah, that hurts. “
