In her lifetime, sharing meals was a way of socializing. Catching up after a long day and decompressing together, swapping stories and making memories over good food and even better company. To meet Steve’s mother was a surreal experience— honored to share the space with the woman who’d raised the man she loved, helped him become the person he was today. The woman was here in front of her, and Diana observed with their interactions and noted the similarities silently to herself with a fond smile picturesque on her expression the entire dinner. Steve had been raised to be loyal, kind, open-minded, adventurous and self-sacrificing like Diana, willing to do whatever it took to save people. Diana owed her all of her gratitude.
There wasn’t any battle for a first impression. No, that had taken place with Diana’s mother, Queen of the Amazons, and perhaps the perfect only acceptable way for Hippolyta to bother acknowledging Steve’s presence in the first place. A man. Trespasser. Bringing violence in tow beyond the horizon, and taking away her daughter from the safety of Themyscira. Absence made the heart grow fonder, but Diana would make that decision again in every lifetime. Because fate had led her to the right place at the right time in meeting Steve and preventing the humans of the world from destroying one another under the influence of Ares.
Now, they could start their lives together.
Her perhaps as a U.S. Army nurse… until it would be time for her to leave. Bygones for a later time, the thought never quite fading from its imprint on her heart. So when Steve offered his hand and his murmured request, Diana obliged, curiosity the cat and her following after ushering her many thanks to his mother and sister. Genuinely blessed to share a meal as delightful and satiating as though it’d been gifted by the Gods. Certainly left for some puzzled expression upon their exit.
Following his lead, Diana’s arm looped through the crook of his, and fell into easy step at his side. Natural, like puzzle pieces, they fit together. “You have been keeping me in suspense, Steve, with this mysterious gift. You know your presence is more than a gift enough for me, don’t you?” And she meant it, sincerely, stopping momentarily to kiss his cheek with a featherlight touch.
