the intimacy of sharing an earphone really doesn’t exist anymore. when i was 16 i sat next to my first boyfriend on a bus before we’d started dating when still had crushes on each other. we shared an earphone and he played regina spektor’s dance anthem of the 80s (“the boys and girls watch each other eat when they really just wanna watch each other sleep”) and we sat with our legs touching for the hour bus ride. are the kids sharing airpods? there’s not really any reason to not just listen to ur own music. it feels so tied to like how much harder it was to obtain music then and the limited number of songs u could have on your device. and your friends had different songs to u so you’d share to hear them. plus u actually have to be near each other physically for the string to reach. and u would scroll the songs together and play around w the volume and sometimes jolt it out of each others ears if u moved too fast. such a fun memory and a cute way to enjoy time with another person

if i think carefully sometimes i can experience the rush i used to feel looking at all the ipods in the junk mail i would peruse as a child while eating breakfast. i wanted one so badly and they looked absolutely delicious as well. the colours popped so severely and before that the white ones were so clean and also yummy looking. i never ended up getting one, i always had random brand mp3 players until i got an ipod touch. id get to play with friend’s ones at school when we were sitting next to each other in class sharing an earphone. i do mourn the fact that i will never feel the satisfaction that owning one as a kid would have given me. i could buy one now, and maybe i might, but it’ll never feel the same as it would’ve felt then.
