A dark book on a sunny day. PRAGUE FATALE - by Phillip Kerr. Bernie Gunther, former homicide detective for Kripo---the criminal investigative branch within German police forces---and later P.I. in pre-WWII Berlin, has been sent home from the horrors of the eastern front and installed as an intelligence agent in the Nazi SD. He is summoned to Nazi-occupied Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1942 to serve as something of an investigative bodyguard for the cruel 'Reich Protector' of the new German provinces of Bohemia & Moravia: Reinhard Heydrich. While there in the SS officer's castle headquarters he becomes involved in a murder investigation that stabs towards the heart of the Nazi mythos, threatening its destruction. A scurrilous cast of Nazi characters are interrogated, but the real culprit is the very last one suspected. And the reasons: as vile in their disregard for human life as their party line is for human decency. Bernie is lucky to get out with his life---before the real BIG crime hits the Obergruppenführer, a sick man in a crumbling castle in the forsaken Czech capital. #praguefatale #staffpicks #phillipkerr #berniegunther #noir (at Himmel Park Library)

Here's video of ANIMA by Nick Verstand, on display at SXSW this week. #sxsw2016 #anima2016 (at SXSW)
One of our librarians is at SXSW Interactive, learning new ideas and meeting other staff from other innovative libraries across the world. This is "ANIMA," an interactive exhibit created by Dutch artist Nick Verstand. From the schedule: ANIMA is an interactive installation that investigates communication between humans and an artificial intelligence. This three-dimensional sphere poses as an intelligent and emotional entity. It communicates by interpreting body movements and portrays its character by responding to the observant with an array of audiovisual expressions. Through this behavioral process the installation creates the illusion of being sensory. Because of its inherently different nature, this abstract form challenges our premise for communication. This entity acts as a metaphor for human-to-human relations, as it creates a playful environment for us to investigate uncomfortable questions about communication amongst ourselves: How do we relate to something different from ourselves? How do we communicate with the world around us? When do we perceive something as having a soul? Hashtags: #sxsw #anima2016 http://schedule.sxsw.com/2016/events/event_OE05405 (at SXSW)

We received an email from a library patron by the name of Chris this morning. The photos below were attached and the email read - "To the Library Staff: Yesterday afternoon when I was at the library I enjoyed watching this scene unfold: the careful folding of the flag by the 2 security guards as the sun went down. Here are some pictures - for the library record? - and for the guards! An appreciative library patron, Chris" (at Joel D. Valdez Main Library)
