Just realized that Luca and Alberto quickly jump apart in the boat scene when water gets on Luca’s arm and Massimo turns around to face them.

…Implying that people thought they were hiding something else, whether or not the creators wanted to hint at it.

Ok. Valid take. But it doesn’t really read for me. Their fish. Oblivious fish that go by fish rules and are just getting introduced to human small town norms up close. They probably don’t even think much about how they are perceived or the culture of a likely conservative and religious small town. They don’t know that culture. Because they're fish! And on top of that I don’t think they even fully internally understand how deep they truly feel about eachother. Like yes they become good friends but the movie leaves it at the just realizing their feelings stage if the ending implies anything so I don’t really think they have enough realization of how obliviously gay and pining they are to make an intentional move like that to hide something.

So the whole their hiding something else take feels wrong. They don’t even have enough experience with the way humans act about queer shit during this era and area to feel the need to hide it *gestures vaguely at the train scene*.

Besides on multiple occasions they show some level of recklessness in hiding their unawareness about human norms and behavior. like the trenete scene for instance and forgetting forks exist. Or being generally awkward thinking it’s ok to call people stupido. Or a million other things they do.

so do they show signs of being gay? Hell yes. Is this moment one of them? Mmmmmm no.

I can see where you’re coming from, but that’s not what I was saying.

I meant that that they were hiding their true identities (fish, as you yourself said), but the townspeople had zero clue they were hiding THAT. Who would?! But they were pretty obviously hiding something, so what is it?

Put yourself in Giulia or Massimo’s shoes, for example. They’re hiding something. What could it be… hmm… they’re two teen boys, very obviously close, don’t seem to have parents so they must be on their own, Alberto seems to be overly protective of Luca and jealous when Giulia tries to spend time with him, and they keep jumping apart when people catch them making physical contact… ahhhhh. They must be gay! Oh, that’s not so bad. At least they’re not sea monsters!
