Max from Where the Wild Things Are has got to be my most requested Halloween costume. This is my supply pile for this year's commission.

For the tail, I cut two layers of the green felt for stability and did a zigzag stitch right down the middle and made a T by zigzagging across the bottom. I then simultaneously applied the blue and red applique pieces with only a straight stitch down the middle of each piece.

Then I lined up both green pieces, right side out and sandwiched both the tail and feet in between. I left the space between the headscarf and just above the tail open for stuffing. I did have to change thread as I went along because I chose not to bag the bird and turn it inside out. I did this because the yellow felt I acquired was very stiff and I didn't want to have to deal with turning that. Stuff, pin your opening and zigzag over it. The final step is taking the brown sharpie and roughly outlining the beak and drawing in the nostril holes and smile. I also put lines on the feet, voila! Your parrot is complete!

Body

Next, I attached the wings at the top only with a narrow, short zigzag. After that, I overlapped the beak on to the body and zigzagged it as well. The overlap was about a half an inch and I made sure to make a bracket shaped stitch line, cornering twice. After this it was time to attach the eyes that we previously layered. I attached the handkerchief in a similar manner. I did not sew the entire way across the straight edge, I left it open over the yellow portion of the eyes.

The Eyes

I began by layering the eyes and bartacking the tiny white circle first. My machine has a bartack foot that holds everything in place very well. If you don’t have this, try using the bartack step in an automatic, or semi-automatic buttonhole step.

Next, using an off color bobbin(so you can see it), I did a tight, small zigzag stitch around the larger white circle. After that, I did the same thing on the black circle. Due to the bartack, it wasn’t necessary to go the entire circumference of the black circle.

For this project I used felt squares in green, blue, red, black, white and yellow, fiberfill stuffing, a sewing machine and a brown sharpie. Pretty simple.

Step 1. Using printer paper, I sketched out the body shape and beak. I layered additional sheets and traced out the tail pieces, eyes, wings, feet and bandanna.

Step 2. I cut these all out with paper scissors, including the felt, because it can be really bad for good scissors.

One of my favorite things about Halloween is making costumes for my nephew. This year, he wanted to be the logo for 20th Century Fox, I convinced him that Jake from the Disney Jr. Show Jake and the Neverland Pirates was a better idea. What can I say, I would rather work with fabric than cardboard! I started by making him the parrot from the show out of felt squares. They are on sale at JoAnns this week, 4 for $1. With stuffing, this bird cost me about $2.50 to make.
