I don't mean to frame it as a necessity or a civic duty or anything because there are a million good reasons why somebody can't, but blood donation is a pretty neat hobby! If you haven't tried it before and you meet the requirements, it might even be a fun summer outing. I learned today that my wonderful girlfriend hadn't given blood before and was interested, so we made plans to go to the same place as a date <3

I started out giving whole blood, first because it's the only kind you're allowed to give at 16, then because I was only able to visit smaller clinics that don't have (many) filtration machines. But now I'm in transit distance of a larger center and plan to give platelets for three reasons:

I have a friend who has a platelet-related autoimmune disorder and I've been learning more about their importance over the past year.

The emails I get from the Red Cross tell me that there's a platelet shortage this summer. It's advertising, but it works!

You can give platelets every week, as opposed to every two months for whole blood. I don't know if I'll be living near a clinic later this year, so I'd like to do as much as I can while I can.

This isn't advertising, I'm not being paid by anyone. I tend to think of my tumblr as a place where I reflect on things that I find fun or interesting, because I have irl social outlets for other things. But I've been reflecting in the past few days that blood donation is something that I actually find fun, rather than just useful or virtuous. If you are considering donating blood (of any kind) for the first time, I would recommend it!
