Support Film: “Another Day in Baghdad” #Iraq #Mideast

Have you heard of Kulshi Makoo (Arabic title), which is directed by London-based female Iraqi-female filmmaker Maysoon Pachachi & co-written with Baghdad-based novelist Irada Al Jabbouri. The films depicts a female novelist, and single mother, shocked into silence and unable to write any more in the face of chaos and violence. Creativity becomes the act of resistance, which plays an important part of what the film is about in her case. By recovering her ability to think creatively and to write once again, she finds a way to resist the un-making of her world and, also, reconnect emotionally with her young daughter too. Saudi Arabia, the oil-rich desert kingdom that adheres to a puritanical form of Islam, is scrambling to clean up its image in Washington, D.C. By NAHAL TOOSI

President Barack Obama thinks they’re “free riders.” Republicans and Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, want to make it easier to sue them over the 9/11 attacks. And Donald Trump has threatened to stop buying their oil.

So Saudi Arabia, the desert kingdom that adheres to a puritanical form of Islam, is scrambling to clean up its image.

With Obama due to visit on Wednesday, a Saudi public relations push that began a few months ago is gathering steam. Whether through op-eds, policy announcements or special outreach to the press and Congress, the goal is simple: Show that Saudi Arabia is as anti-terrorism as anyone in Washington, D.C.

It’s an uphill battle, either in the U.S. or elsewhere in the West, and Saudi leaders admit that. “We maybe not have been as communicative as we should be,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir toldBritish media earlier this year.

Muslim Americans, Americans of Mideast descent, and Americans concerned about the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, should consider a presidential candidate who approaches America’s foreign policy that reflects American priorities, values domestic policy, and is mindful of Islamophobic culture perpetuated by Frank Gaffney, candidate Ted Cruz’s foreign policy advisor.

Reason 1: Focusing on U.S. domestic challenges reduces the push for foreign intervention.

Reason 2: Getting money out of politics reduces defense company power and lowers supplies of weapons to MENA region.

Reason 3: Checking foreign influence and interests on U.S. legislative process is key to ensuring American taxpayers’ interests.

Although Arab Gulf countries face slightly oil revenues due to the drop in oil prices, they have not responded like Algeria did last week. On August 17th, the Algerian dinar hit record low as its central bank tries to curb imports. Due to the fall in oil prices, Algeria’s oil revenues dropped by half. “Government officials expect them to bring in $34 billion this year, down from $68 billion in 2014,” according to Al-Arabiya News.

13 Billion Reasons for UAE to Buy Into Iran's Nuclear Framework

Iran believes that the nuclear framework agreement will bring about foreign investment in its oil and gas sector. Iran is not alone in its optimism because the nuclear framework agreement spells out ending economic sanctions. Ending economic sanctions means that even skeptical countries can profit legally. UAE trade with Iran spells out 13 billion reasons -- as in $13 billion USD -- for the UAE to reconsider its nuclear neighborhood. (Unlike Israel, Iran is now party to the Treaty on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or NPT.) Earlier this week, an IMF paper projected that the UAE may benefit in a 1 percent real GDP growth yearly, until 2018.
