Quick update incoming, piping hot!

The Paranormality Soundcloud account has had a bit of a shuffle around. All of the previous playlists have been privated as they no longer fit the tone, length and current canon feel of the game. While this may sound disappointing, (At least, I hope you aren't disappointed. Don't worry, though. They won't stay hidden forever) they have been replaced by something new!

The current playlist that's public is themed around Paranormality's Prologue and now fits the new state of the project far better. Now there isn't one gazillion tracks for every little thing. Yippee!

While we've yet to get an official soundtrack for Paranormality, that will come in due time. Right now, the primary focus is tying up any loose ends, creating sprites and creating the Prolouge build. With that being said...if your curious...

Heya! Whelp...this may sound like it's coming a bit out of nowhere but...

THE PLANNING STAGE FOR PARANORMALITY'S FIRST ACT IS (almost) OVER!

That's right! Now, this news may need a tad more explaining than what's on the surface but it's a good job your resident yapper is here to overexplain the state of their passion project!

So before we get to the juicy details of the announcement, let's go over that "Act 1" bit, shall we? Basically, that "secret document" that I have been working on was focused on Act 1 of Paranormality. Sprites, stats and all sorts of other game-related goodies have been catalogued onto the document as a sort of development guide/summary. While there are bits and pieces left to touch up on and/or add in, I am happy to announce that the planning stage will be coming to an end very soon!

So...what's next? What's after this "planning stage"?

The next big step for Paranormality will be focusing on getting an early build of the prologue completed as well as getting work done on sprites. While I am currently content with the sketched-out style, I may have to either switch to digital art for the sake of convenience or commission someone to help. I...ain't really good at art.

Now is the time when I can finally put those ideas and plans into action. Paranormality is slowly but surely being given life as more progress is made. Words cannot express how excited I am!

While there is a lot more stuff I want to share with you guys, I'm kinda getting too excited for my own good right now so I'm going to stop myself here before I burn myself out again. I can't wait to be sharing this new era of Paranormality with y'all! The game's release is getting closer and closer with each passing day! It's like a multiple-year-long advent calendar!

Oh...and two last things.

1. I will share more about this at a later date but the Paranormality lore Rewrite has been completed. I am much more satisfied with the current canon now so please consider that some of the posts before this one may include some non-canon information. Oops.

So...uh...oops.

It's been...quite a while since lil ol' me, Pizza Pie posted on here, huh?

Long story short...Paranormality is still alive! Yeah...no matter how long the breaks I take may be, this project ain't gonna rot any time soon. I'm back with some fresh new ideas and updates!

But first, I might as well explain why it's been so long since I've shown anything Paranormality related to the public. Motivation is like gambling except instead of wagering money...you wager investment. (The...uh...emotional kind) I seem to daydream a lot about Paranormality but I just never seem to have the energy to actually get any of the stuff down. So far, I've been on a 3-month break from college after finishing my first year. I did plan to do a lot of Paranormality stuff during that period but procrastination is one helluva topping. Basically, I really need to shift my rear into gear.

However, on the bright side, I do have some new announcements! So lend me your ears and go grab a slice...because imma gonna list em' out...right about...now!

1. I might create another account for Paranormality to post on. While the Tiktok account and YouTube account still have plans for them, I'd figured I'd try to have another social media account for the project in hopes of getting more eyes on the project. Well...that and I have no idea how to use Tumblr...nor am I that good at art. Oof. Don't worry, though! For the sake of preservation, the Tumblr account will still be updated and open!

2. While I can't share too much, another document is being written up (By yours truly! Ohohoho- COUGH- HACK-) that will act as both a summary for Act 1...but also as a development guide! Although, this document will be kept (for the most part) private as to not spoil any of the surprises the Paranormality team and I may be cooking up. This document will contain rewritten Lore and information and as such, the documents that are attached to the pinned comment will be deemed as non-cannon material...uh...k-kinda. An abridged/introduction document will be created as to serve as an introduction to the project and what it's all about. But don't worry! The old documents will still be available to read if ya fancy. Oh...and some of the information contained in those documents will be either re-used or rewritten for the new cannon, so think of them kinda like a rough draft.

3. I'm still working on that YouTube introduction video, I swear! It's j-just...u-uh...um..erm...

...God. I hate procrastination. It sucks. :(

Anyways, that's it doe the status update. I'll be working on some of that new good stuff and hopefully I'll have some significant progress made now that my brain has crawled outta the gutter lol.

What's up, Pizza pals?

So, while I continue cooking on that YouTube video I mentioned in the last post, (I've got the script written up and most of the..."props"...created) I found some Paranormality sketches out in the wild amid the tall grass! (The shiny rates were kinda Crummy though. I guess that's why all of these things are monochrome, huh?)

These doofus drawn doodles feature mostly brand-new characters from the Rewrite I mentioned a while back. There's also some other doodles of existing goobers so don't worry, they haven't gone anywhere.

First up is...this guy.

Now, I know that trying not to spoil things on a page that has several rough outlines and drafts of all sorts of 6 elements but this is on even I don't want to give away- even before it's fully canonised. All I can say about this guy is three things.

1. He recently got a new design. I basically took a lot of design cues from a semi-scrapped character; The unnamed God that created Gonezlowe. I want to add in a couple more viking elements into his appearance much like his old design had but for now, I'm having way too much fun doodling this cosy weirdo with his new look.

2. He has had a complete personality change. Whereas before he had a much more authoritarian and threatening presence, He is now primarily made that aspect of himself secondary part of their personality. Now they are kinda a strange, form-changing goop guy with his own way of speaking and a whole lot of confusion about the outside world. For emotional story beat purposes, he still does have a very serious role to play within the narrative but now with the new Rewrite, not only is he more fun for me to actually write for...but also he's much less of a Gaster knockoff. Thank God. ;)

3. Bazinga.

The other Silly Scribbly is...Von Etch (In the image, her name is "Von Ketch" but I'm going to change it mostly because Von Etch rolls off the lounge better)

I've had the idea of a semi-militant character who spends time training their troops for whatever goofy thing they wanna do and acting completely serious about it for a while now. Due to the bandits, while being fun to write for, not really feeling like a convincing enough protective force for Florlelle, (Who is getting another rewrite soon) the Commander of all things Drawsome was made to fill their place. While the bandits are still going to be featured in Paranormality, they are no longer the primary antagonistic force of Zone 2.

Design-wise, I wanted to experiment with more odd head shapes as well as have more unique bodies for characters. I often draw characters with circular or pointy heads with matchstick-like bodies and it has become kinda annoying for me whenever I subconsciously end up drawing it lol. So, for some much-needed variety, I tried experimenting with a much more angular character design, complete with a triangular head. And thus, Von Etch's character design was found. I enjoyed drawing this character way too much, as well. Her character reference sheet is pratically full. Oops.

[Here's some extra doodles that I found. It's just some miscellaneous creatures that I may or may not end up using as NPC's or something. The Creature on the top right ended up looking rather...u-uh..."unfortunate" to say the least. I SWEAR that wasn't intentional.

Oh, and the elderly goober from earlier is her as well. I guess I must have gotten lost or something. His contacts probably fell out.

I'm still working on the Paranormality YouTube video. I'll try to get it out there by the end of this month or at the start of July. If you've noticed the huge gaps in between posts, then you'd know that procrastination has go this Pizza Roll in a cheesy chockehold and the YouTube video is no different. I've genuinely got no excuses, my brain box is just annoying like that. It's all Gloopy. Bleh.

I'll also probably post the occasional doodle on Tiktok every so often, so hopefully that will help cure me of my "Lazy Ass".

10TH OF MAY?!

So...I guess I've got some explaining to do, huh? Whelp...here goes nothing. (Cue a 3-hour-long video essay on the Paranormality drought)

Long story short...the project ain't dead! (Yippee.wav)

A ton of stuff has once again popped up in my personal life since the last post that has kinda slowed things down a tad. College tomfoolery being the primary suspect, as per usual. HOWEVER, there is another reason as to why I accidentally dropped the Paranormality Tumblr account into a temporary limbo.

I've been cooking up some pretty cool little treats in terms of stuff to post on the other official Paranormality accounts. You know the ones. Their linked to the pinned comment on this whole thing...and yet...they are all rather desolate. Well...that's about to change!

While the Soundcloud account will remain as it's delightfully...uh...empty self, (I have no idea how to compose satisfactory music...drat) the Tiktok account and the YouTube account will have lot's of neat tidbits and doodles for y'all to peep. (If you want to, that is. I ain't gonna force ya. Live wild and free, Pizza people)

Oh...and about that YouTube account...

Let's just say your gonna want to keep tabs on it. Something nifty will soon awaken from it's primordial slumber. A semi shitpost of the ages, if you will. If your interested in what is essentially a dinky sales pitch of Paranormality with a side of non cannon antics...well...

The Paranormality Soundcloud account has been updated. Playlists have now been slightly rearranged to fit the current music track order, playlist covers have been changed to use the more recent doodles of the characters (specifically their current dialogue portraits) and a brand new playlist has been created where all the old tracks that were swapped out reside. That's the power of a malleable cannon, folks. Ti's a wonderful(?) thing.

I apologise for the red text at the end of the last post. It must have been something they put in the anchovies...

...uh...anyways...overworld stuff is pretty neat, r-right?

RPG games tend to be a blend between both battles and exploration with a lotta dialogue and interactions. Paranormality is no different. Earth has been thrown into oddly cosy absurdity with many charming weirdos, events, stories, items, puzzles and cool music waiting to be experienced. It's a whole weird world out there...but how can you navigate it?

Below is a mock-up of an unspecified room/area:

Looks pretty...uh...s-snazzy, doesn't it? (Nervous laugh) This room showcases some of the most important elements of overworld progression.

Jestoro and Larenza: Unless they are split from one another, Jestoro will always be the party member the player controls with the other party members following from behind.

NPCs: An NPC will have a thought bubble hovering above them to indicate that you can talk to them. Other intractable entities and objects will have unique thought bubbles to indicate what they do. For example, an NPC with an available side quest will have a thought bubble with "!" to show that a side quest is available.

Decoration and paths: Visual elements that act purely as...well...decoration or as something you can walk across. They can be either walked into...or over depending on what the object is and where it is placed. For example, you can walk over leaves...but you can't walk over a tree. Also...you can walk on paths but not walls.

Enemies: Enemies will patrol an area in their unique way, with the most common being stationary until rushing you when you get close. When an enemy makes contact with the player a battle will commence. Once the player returns to the overworld after a battle is over, the enemy will disappear until the player leaves the room.

The enemy shown on the mockup below is a placeholder. His name is Melpert. Say hi, Melpert!

Uh...I can't think of a pizza pun or joke right now...um...

Heya! So...guess what? Some more Paranormality sketches...draft...thingies(?) are about to (Pizza) roll your way! These aren't your usual character doodles, though. These are...gameplay doodles...A.K.A, Rough concepts for specific rooms, overworld stuff and most exciting of all...battles!

In this post, I shall be showing off the current vision for what the battle system may look like. Please note that like the rest of the project, ideas and concepts are likely to change and develop over time. As such, the appearance of battles may change when finalised compared to current drafts.

With that blabbering outta the way, let's get going! Starting with...this!

The rough sketch above shows off the main mechanic of battles within Paranormality:

The dodge mechanic

When it's the enemy's turn to strike, you will be tasked to dodge various attacks from your foes until the timer experience and it is your turn once more. The actual dodging will involve moving a step towards any available spaces on your platform's grid. Think of it kinda like Everhood and Punch-out mixed together.

Stats for enemies, allies and items will be kept purposely low, similar to TTYD. This way, you can know exactly how much damage you can take and deal with, as well as know how much HP an enemy has without needing to estimate stuff. Also similar to TTYD, you can parry attacks with perfect timing- but it can be risky.

Here is a quick mock-up of how an enemy may attack:

Next up are the stats. As per usual RPG game rules, party members and foes will have access to the same categories of stats. (Enemies will not have access to BP/Brain Power)

HP: Health Points. If an enemy or Party member loses all of their HP, they are defeated.

DEF: Defence. Will negotiate 1 point of damage for each DEF stat. Will not negotiate damage if an attack that Peirces DEF is used.

BP: Brain Power. Allows for usage of special attacks. Basically just magic.

ATK: Attack. While result in +1 more damage dealt or recieved for every point of ATK. Can have lessened effects by DEF.

SM: Sanctuary Mask. Can gain 1 point of SM when chosen during a level up, clearing a battle without taking damage and/or by clearing a Zone. Depending on the Sanctuary Mask attack tat is chosen, different requirements and outcomes will be possible depending on the chosen attack. Each SM attack will consume different amounts of SM.

(SM used to be called "SC", an acronym for "Sanctuary Charm". This name will be changed during the Lore Rewrite)

During battles, enemies will have various sprites for different interactions during battle. These sprites will be reflected both on the enemy's platform as well as on their stat window. Here are some examples:

"Alright, let's pizza cutter to the chase".

So...a lot of stuff is happening with Paranormality in the past few days. That is to say...I've announced some stuff and daydreamed about some stuff but procrastination has had this pizza in a stranglehold without mushroom. So, this post is gonna have a bunch of Paranormality info here as some compensation for my brain's pesky procrastinating trickery.

Procrastination:

All that stuff that I mentioned last post will be worked on, so fear not! I shall give myself a metaphorical (and literal if I was a gymnast) kick up ye ol' ass to get some more work done.

Character dialogue portrait sketches:

Speaking of getting stuff done, I drew up some sketches of potential dialogue sprites a couple of days ago. These were actually pretty fun to make, even if the shape consistency between a character's portraits was a tad scuffed. There will be a few more of these made in the future for the rest of Act 1's major characters so keep your eyes and toppings peeled. (I was also sleep-deprived as all hell making these lol. Turns out, doing these took way longer than expected. I think I finished by 4 am or something. Ah well. At least I can probably use these goobers for things in the future)

Voice Malarkey:

I have also been playing around with some voice work with Paranormality as of recently and it has got me thinking about how Paranormality will handle voices and voice acting. The short answer? Nah, Paranormality won't have traditional voice acting. It might use samples in the soundtrack but that's about it. (Sadly, Chris Pratt won't be voicing Jestoro lmao) Instead, characters will have the usual weird talking sounds whenever they speak but I'm gonna go one step further. Each main character will have cut-up audio of real-life object sounds as their voices. For example, Larenza's sound clip will be the sound of a wind chime. The only ones I'll probably not do this for are the regular NPCs and Jestoro. Jestoro's sound clip will just be edited and jumbled gibberish taken from me just saying whatever goofy quote comes to my mind first.

Although, I might have the characters speak in external material such as on the Paranormality YouTube and TikTok accounts. These voices aren't cannon and are mostly gonna be me saying silly nonsense for shitposts and the like.

Battle System:

The battle system is still being fully conceptualised and will be brought up in more detail in the next post. I can say that while it needs some more work at the moment, I am quite happy with what I have come up with so far. I just hope when Act 1's draft phase comes to a close, the finalised battle system won't be too nightmarish to program. (Don't worry. I'll pay for Dino's therapist. That and a lifetime's supply of nuggets)

Soundtrack:

Paranormality's soundtrack has been discussed between me and some other good old chaps of mine. While it will most likely be the very last thing that will be completed for the release of Paranormality Act 1 in 20XX, I can say that just the thought of it alone makes me feel all excited and cosy at the idea. Music is just as important as the words on the screen. Music has the power to heighten the emotions of specific moments as well as stick in your head long after first listening...as well as sometimes being nice to bop around to. Getting to have that extra layer of identity for this weird passion project just feels really cool, y'know? Again, music is going to be one of the most difficult elements to create for Paranormality, alongside actually coding the thing. I ain’t no composer and finding folks to help with creating some jams will require some work...and socialising. (My biggest weakness next to Marmite and spacial awareness) If anyone reads this dinky little post and is interested in composing some stuff for testing, I will literally start crying and thank you...and cry some more. (Which is my really weird way of saying "Thank you") I would bring up the Paranormality Soundcloud account but I couldn't think of any natural ways to fit it in. Ah, yes. "Natural"...says the talking pizza.

Tumblr Tomfoolery:

I got a notification earlier from Tumblr wen I opened the app. Apparently, the Pizza-rollzee blog has been around for 1 whole year. That's...news to me. I think the first post I ever made on here was on the 16th of December, 2024. That's not a whole year ago...and I don't remember having a Tumblr blog up before then...but it's cool news regardless! I...think?

Closing thoughts;

Wowza! That sure was a lotta yapping, huh? Well, now that my (probably) longest post has been made, I hope its contents have gotten you excited about the future of Paranormality.. I also hope that no matter how long it takes, the development of this project can grow from constructive criticism and the passion of others. This bizarre world that even before this account's creation- was forming in my head for almost a year now, has been one of my greatest emotional comforts. I hope this project's world and strange characters can be as important to somebody out there as they are to me.

Heya. Wazzup, Pepperoni peeps?

So...Paranormality, huh? I must admit, my dumbass doughy brain likes procrastinating. I've had the project on my mind for a while, mostly daydreaming or doodling new ideas down when it hit me. Like an ominous firetruck rushing its prey down an alleyway that defies reality to fit in- I had an idea. An idea that may take a while for my brain to fully catch up on. Idk, maybe all the pizza jokes finally got to it.

Paranormality is still in its really, really early stages as of now. A ton of ideas that I had written down or made mental notes of don't gel too well with what the project currently is and what the finished thing will eventually end up as. However, don't worry! This ain't a reboot or anything like that! All the gameplay stuff is gonna be the same. (except for some minor tweaks to the battle system and figuring out balanced stats for items as well as party members and foes) it's still going to be an RPG- so don't expect Jestoro to be the protagonist of a 1st person shooter lmao.

Mostly, I wanna touch up on the writing side of things. Character dialogue, lore, certain plot elements and ESPECIALLY working on filling in some of those pesky plot holes. Again, I'm not planning on fully rebooting the project or anything. I'm content with a lot of the established rules and goobers of the universe and doing a total do-over would not only be a pain in the behind...but it would also just wouldn't be fun to invest myself in anymore. I've grown way too attached to the themes I want to explore with this project, so expanding upon those key story elements with both personal investment as well as constructive criticism will help the project grow as opposed to rewriting the whole thing.

Whole "reboot" tangent aside, I'll mainly be focusing on rewriting specific sample dialogue to be more in line with the personalities of characters as initially pitched to ya'll, planning ahead (a tad) so that foreshadowing can be more natural, giving previously glossed over or underutilised concepts much more depth, condense the overall lore into a digestible size, reworking ideas such as the "Sanctuary Charms" design wise to have a better link to the main themes, and some other stuff.

All the stuff that is written out within the "Lore", "Dialogue" and "Extras" documents will remain there for reference and archival purposes. The sections that have been written so far will still be present but specific sections or sentences will be labelled as "old" with the new version either being at the bottom of the corresponding document or on a new one entirely. (I'll see which one my brain yanks me into doing first)

So...yeah. Basically, light tweeks and add ons to the current story will be popping up from time to time.

Oh- and...uh...major character designs will also remain the same. Which is pretty neat-o considering Larenza has had WAY too many designs until a couple of months ago lol.

Now, with all off this "Rewrite" malarkey outta the way, I've got some cool new reveals brewing up, so make sure to check back when it's out. You don't want your coffee to get cold.
