The overwhelming impression this slice makes is one of tonkatsu sauce and cheese. There is tomato-y pizza sauce spread on the toast itself, and a sprinkling of lettuce and ham adds an accent, but you’re in for a sweet, gooey time here. Not really my thing, so consider this a low 3.

The gang (onions, peppers, mushrooms) is all here, and their flavors shine. Perfectly gooey cheese. A four-star if I ever chomped one.

Location: Guchi Possibly the weirdest pizza toast I’ve ever had? It’s more like onion jam with cheese or something. Not that it was sweet, per se, besides the natural sweetness of the onion (which was sweet), but there was nothing pizza-y about it in the slightest. Some places just decide if it has melted cheese on top, it’s pizza. I’m not gonna say it was bad or anything, but it was not “good pizza toast.”

An attractive slice with tasty pepperoni and I want to say two of the three classic veggies. The only issue I had with it was that the sauce felt too sweet. This shop is all about bread and toast, so that part of it was great.

The star of this slice is the sauteed onion. It goes delightfully with the ham and cheese. Frankly, it’s rare to find onion caramelized like this on pizza toast. The toast was toasted lightly and to be frank, the sauce (?) was so light it almost seemed like a mistake. This doesn’t taste like pizza at all, but it’s delicious, so I can’t complain too much.

Location: Caravan Coffee A pretty much perfect classic slice. The cheese is delicious and so gooey. They use some fancy ketchup and top with all the traditional veggies plus ham. Nice thickness of bread properly toasted. Honestly, I want to go back and eat it again.

This saucy slice with ham and peppers is thinner than most pizza toasts, and I feel like there could have been more cheese, but it had a lot of flavor. Good spices in the sauce and the rare addition of yellow bell peppers. Frankly, I just want two of them to come as a set.

Location: Antenna Coffee House Honestly, though I spent a lot of time in this cafe during my trip to Onomichi, I was ready to hate this because of the corn. Corn is never a good sign. Luckily, pizza toast is always the sum of its parts, and somehow, the slivers of red onion and ham, modest cheese covering, and most of all, the sauce managed to balance it out. Really, I should have asked what was going on in that sauce; it seemed almost like a bolognese. In any case, it was much more complex than ketchup. I can’t say taking the corn off wouldn’t make this slice better, but having it on didn’t hurt nearly as much as I expected. Rating: ★★★☆

This spot tucked away on the hill had two flavors of pizza toast when I visited. The one I ordered was jako negi and the one I didn’t was chicken teriyaki. To be honest, though it looks sensational, it was only so-so. The flavor of the tiny fishies felt somewhat muted by the cheese, and the mayo (?) didn’t add much flavor at all. The bread was nice, so I was hoping for a little more excitement from the toppings. Luckily, there are plenty of other reasons to visit this charming cafe... Rating: ★★☆☆

A delightful slice and the first of 2020. Substantial rings of green pepper top a mess of gooey, gooey cheese and a generous helping of pepperoni. The sauce has a tang to it, which I like, but it is also a little sweet for my taste. Still, look how the cheese is dripping... Rating: ★★★☆

This cute slice makes its appearance at breakfast only. Despite the good mix of toppings (onion, green pepper, hammy bits), it somehow manages to be incredibly bland. I think once again the sauce was the culprit. Eminently edible is the best I can say, sorry. Rating: ★★☆☆

What a charming slice! This is the bacon pizza toast, although it seemed more hammy to me. She also does a tuna corn pizza toast, and a plain one with just cheese and sauce. The bread is homemade and toasted to a perfect crunch, though the inside is fluffy. What can I say? I feel the love.

At first I was thinking this might be a three, but as I kept eating, the ingredients disappointed me. The bread felt pointless,the sauce was only slightly better than the one I panned the other day, and those bitter little sprouts, though appreciated, don’t make up for the lack of depth. I wanted to like it (and look at that stylish presentation; weird how one of the middle pieces is brought to the end), but it just didn’t happen.

Isn’t this a beauty? I thoroughly enjoyed this well-toasted slice, and not only for its golden-brown top.The sauce really held it all together where “it all” is ham, onions, and green pepper. Although there were nearly too many onions, and the cheese had borderline weighted-blanket syndrome, I feel like nobody ever said four stars is perfect. At least I didn’t. Sometimes I wonder if my reviews are still accurate, but whatever—even if it’s a low four, this cozy pizza toast is still up there. Rating: ★★★★
Location: Kona My first impression was of mushroom-shaped toast with plenty of mushrooms on top. Well that’s fine. There are also slivers of ham and green pepper. So the trifecta is out in full force, but there’s one problem. Yes, the sauce. It kinda ruined the whole thing for me with its bizarre sweetness. A two feels cruel, but it was just so difficult to enjoy this slice. Rating: ★★☆☆
Location: Peak Roast Coffee Believe it or not, this slice was under-toasted. Also, fresh tomato topping made it rather wet. Still, the flavor was nice, and it was a hearty meal. Rating: ★★★☆
