Hey artists, C. Spike Trotman, founder of Iron Circus Comics, just posted an invaluable thread on depicting different types of black hair. I’d do the thing where you screencap the whole thread and post it but it’s just too long (which is great because it’s a whole lot of useful information!) Give her a follow while you’re there.
Anyway, go check it out. I just wanted to save it and share it because I didn’t know how much I didn’t know!
This is an amazing resource, not only for artists, but for writers too! I love this!
{ID - tweet from @/Iron_Spike that reads, “Black Hair for Non-Black Artists: a Cheat Sheet Thread. Hi, folks! Just spur-of-the-moment decided to put together some reference for folks who want to draw/model black characters in their work, but arent confident they won’t make simple, obvious mistakes w/r/t black hair. END ID}
I noticed in the comments that some people can’t see the thread, so I took screenshots for y'all!
More will come in reblogs, since tumblr has an image limit

(A drawing I did back in July for the @transocanthology, featuring my DnD OC Mélisande (he/him). As always, I play him in @luposlipaphobya's delightful campaign, Val Cardinal)
i have WiFi again so I will take the opportunity to make use of my online library membership which I have no access to most days because online libraries despise poor people. whenever the WiFi goes out again for various reasons, I will download any unfinished books through suspicious websites and no one will be able to stop me. i refuse to let capitalism prevent me from engaging fully with my own medium
regarding the archaic use of men as a gender neutral term. I think this is okay if you, the writer, are fine with referring to a group of (exclusively) women as men. If you can’t see yourself doing that, it probably means the archaic use of men won’t be very useful to you.
i did a deep dive on Tiana Clark and I really want to meet whoever told her BBHMM would scare away white readers, so i can steal the gas out of their car
complimentary
the old lady
in the store said
“your hair is beautiful”
i’ve been
struggling to sleep again
counting what fingers
i’d give to
see you
free in your skin
wondered why
nobody ever
borrowed
time alone
for the night
why always
someone else’s
could i borrow
a light
or an ear
but if i
borrowed today
to give back
the next
i wouldn’t have it
by tomorrow
or to see in me
required seeing
in someone else
like the lady
at the store
with beautiful silver hair
i saw the touch of the sun one morning dark orange above the cold and folding water a year had passed since you left me for a coffin and i was pacing through a night absent sleep until the morning tugged my tired eyes toward it was more than just the sun it was a star, without siblings light years away and still it brought the day lonely as i
i thought it was twilight i’d grown so— used to endings an end to familiarity, to safety i wondered if you’d left your coffin, hoped it
i didn’t look for the sun it didn’t look for me, i realized it was my first untouched memory of a new day
