Hello! I’m sorry if it’s been a while since you’ve submitted this. I’ve only recently gotten back online.

First of all, it’s hard to “suck” at poetry. I think pretty much anything can be a poem if you try hard enough lol.

As far as advice on writing poetry goes, I’d say the most important thing is to stay patient with yourself. Your first poems might not sound exactly how you want them to, but it’s important that you’ve written them because each poem you write will get you closer and closer to your own unique voice. Don’t stop writing! Even if you just write a journal entry or a simple sentence with line breaks, you’re still putting in the work!

Write a poem about one of your closest friendships.

Before you get started, imagine them as vividly as you can. Remember every physical detail about them you admire. Remember the sound of their voice and the way their hugs feel. Imagine some of your favorite moments with them. Also, imagine some of the hardest times with them. Relationships are complex and not always picture perfect. The people we love hurt us, and we hurt the people we love. Sometimes we let go. Sometimes we have to. Sometimes we don’t want to. Take in fully the entire experience of this friendship and use it to fuel your next poem.

“I Don’t Sweat, I Sparkle” by RJ Walker, For Shannielle Faith

It took the surgeon days of cutting and implanting, but it had finally been done. I had finally achieved godhood. I now sweat glitter. I was like you once. Boring. Smelly matte colored. Nobody invited me to their birthday party. Nobody would dance with me no matter how many drugs I took. But everything changed once I realized the truth. That humans are fucking ugly and they smell bad. But you know what isn’t ugly or smelly? Disco balls. Everybody loves fucking disco balls. So I decided to become a disco ball. The good doctor replaced all of my sweat glands with house parties. He replaced my blood with confetti my tears are now sprinkles and every waking moment I excrete glitter. He even dressed me up in the nicest suit I’d ever worn! Now, I shine like a new day. I am a fucking firework. I explode everywhere I go!

Who’s the brightest student now, Mrs. Whitmore? Can you see me now mom! Can you see me now dad! Your son has finally become a star! A sparkling nova. You can dig up your memory of me and put it in the sky now. So famous now, they drive me around in the back of my personal black limo. Look at all the friends I have now! Look at all the people who care about me now! Standing around me in their best black suits and black dresses watching waiting to see what I will do next, how the sun, shines off my face. The disco ball boy. Famous now, I even made the papers my photo next to words about how awesome I was to have around. They’ve put a plaque on the ground dedicated to how brightly I shine. “Our Little Light” in gold letters next to my name. This is finally my moment. The moment you watch this best dressed little boy explode. Look at the emotion on their faces they can’t even hold it in as they all lift me up like their new king! They gently set me down and gather around and deliver speeches about how much they love me and close the lid.
