After much research I have constructed a Jose Carioca scoring system to judge how in character an appearance is.

*Note: I haven't read all the Newspaper strips because they are very hard to find. I have read a good amount of the Brazilian comics however.

I have now read all the (American) Comic strips and have amended the chart. I looked into the Dutch comics, but I think I will fuse them into "Comics" generally since there are also Italian and German riffs on the similar character type.

I have also made a few charts to organize this Ze-ience.

what are your thoughts on hazbin hotel, because i just realized that spamtenna is like the (probably) less toxic version fowhetever alastor and vox have going on. but that might just be me associating the tv heads together

I actually started watching hazbin hotel this year bc I got curious what all the fuzz was about and I had fun with it. Unsurprisingly the TV is my favorite and doomed oldman yaoi is also my fav ship, I truly can't be more predictable if I tried LMAO

I do have thoughts but they're kind of all over the place so I've made diagrams instead to try and pinpoint what I love about these idiots doomed by the narrative and their religious iconography:

The secret sauce I'm looking for in my doomed yaoi ships:

Business partners loving business partners. Very transactional! Strings included and everything

Never show vulnerability. Always keep secrets. Lie and let it become a web that entangles and poisons everything

Break the contract! Ruin any and all goodwill and trust. Maybe killing each other would solve the problem

Lie awake at night and wonder what could have been if things were different

Become obsessed. Fill the void they left in your heart with religion. Then kill that God too

As much as I adore Brighter as a sequence i must be the one to say it has absolutely no point to the greater narrative and doesn't advance the plot at all.

Like its my favorite sequence in the whole show but thinking about it they kinda stopped making hazbin for 3 minutes and focused on this much cooler short film about Vox. Well we already know he's a bad dude who has no hesitation killing people. It doesn't really advance the takeover plot nor the hotel or any of the moral questions presented in any of the cast.

We still dont know concretely the origin of the Vees, how close Al and Vox were, why Vox is so desperate for Alastors approval he'll kill himself over it, or anything actually important about them. The sequence tells us he was a successful serial killer (which is cool but not exactly useful, he's in hell and we've seen him casually feed people to his shark) and that he is desperate for power and control, which we knew already.

We forget for a moment this is hazbin hotel and transfer into a backstory fanfiction type onseshot about how cool Vox is and although it's literally the best thing ever it's so out of place and unnecessary. Its only function is giving us parallels to Alastors human flashback and hope we the fans theorize and characterize for them. Nothing about the relationship between these two important figures is actually developed or explained, especially their time in hell before the fallout. This is technically a poor way to deliver relationships as it's the writers job to explore and develop them and not the consumer.

And yet Brighter is still my favorite thing in the whole show and I've binged the song all day 10/10

Alastor pushed Vox away and turned down the partnership because he's owned by Rosie and he's not allowed to bring other sinners up to his level because he's the chosen overlord with a promised power as long as he follows orders. Vox, angry and heartbroken, grew to resent this forever and does everything to one up and copy his old partner to prove his worth. Despite saying over and over that he hates Al, he lives rent free in his mind and is completely obsessed with the love they once shared and the failed partnership torn apart by Al's situation and horrible relationship skills/self image.
